So, chatting in EVE today I am told that CCP turns over all of our chat logs, personal fittings, notes, bookmarks, and other assorted information to the Department of Homeland Security every so often.
This is a joke right?
I have nothing to hide, but it seems like a wholly necessary thing to do since CCP is in a different sovereign nation than the DHS.
Clarification from CCP?

It's pretty well known and established that agencies such as the FBI have teams dedicated to monitoring MMOs and other online forums (read communities) for suspicious activities. Think of all the extended metaphors for an "event" that could be conveyed in a game setting without raising suspicion.
Now logs and the companies themselves working hand in hand. That would seem unlikely, but :tinfoil: |

In our ongoing attempts to become more informed on these matters , i and my team have designed detachable , very durable
( used freezer grade foil ) wings for our hats and glided into a small airport on the Canadian border.
Overcoming canadian security was easy ( they were drinking Molson and watching "That 70's Show" ) and never noticed us.
We found no evidence of information trafficing between Iceland and the USA....of course if you know what it looks like that would help. |

Actually only if they feel the need to they subpoena the logs for a certain time frame. The actual truth is they have a program running that "reports" key words in conversations alerting authorities who then further monitor or even subpoena records. Sadly this is done without our or the chat host's knowledge or consent. They also scan message boards using the same program. Taking it a bit further certain words, phrases, and discussions get your user name/ID put on a list and red flagged for monitoring more closely.

Dunno about DHS but maybe for advertisement purposes. The other night I was talking with someone about employment opportunities in the mining sector. Rio Tinto and BHP Biliiton were mentioned a few times now my Yahoo home page is full of Rio Tinto ads looking to fill positions across Canada. |

Many public ( public in this case means funded by small educational grants and private foundations and viewers) tv stations in usa have discussed this issue - the privacy vs public safety thing...so far the FBI is free to monitor world wide electronic communications and does.
Careful you don't hit the wrong button selecting your **** and get flagged for something really deviate. |

I dont know dude, I was helping help chat, and people hate googleing. Sure all they have to do is type in I hate bush, or Kill bush into google, for the FBI to spy on people. But seriously who uses google?
I think they would spy on eve, get russians, europes, other countries here. Be a big gold strike. |

Hahaha! If only that rumor were true every single pilot in this game would be on the terror watch list, they even might have to create a new one just for us. A "Mass murderer warning" list? I mean,I'm sure many of us don't even count how many station and ship crews we've killed in missions and fleet actions anymore. |

They might have programs going through heaps of useless chat logs. But I doubt many would take those logs seriously.
If they knew people who were suspicious and wanted to watch them. I'd think it much more likely that they'd look at the chat logs of those people in games and see who they talk to. I believe it'd be more focused. I don't think they'd necessarily ask CCP is they could look at the chat logs of everything said in game.
Most the time these agencies/organisations have pretty good hacking programs, and usually the laws, that allow them to use hacking to watch what suspicious people do on their computers. Not some random games logs. It wouldn't matter what game it was.
It'd be a waste of time, for most people, to worry about such a thing. |
