I welcome this for 2 reasons:
1. Macroing is bad
2. It will hopefully result in fewer "omgwtf! ccp is doing nothing about macro miners!!!oneone" threads which keep appearing in general discussion about 5 times a day which i am getting rather sick of. |

I would congratulate CCP for the bannings and even more importantly making the number so publically known. I've gotten frustrated in the past by a perceived lack of action in bannings but I would take the opportunity to salute CCP for their efforts in trying to stamp out this form of cheating.

And a big thank you and congratulations to CCP for banning these macro miners trying to wreck Eve for their own benefit. They took their time, then uncloaked and gave them the back of their hand!
But while we're popping open the champagne, let's not forget about all the players who identified the macro miners, petitioned against them, and brought countless complaints against them. The player base did a good job uncovering the macro miners, and I'm sure it helped CCP in their wtfbanned! action.
Congratulations CCP, and congratulations fearless macro miner hunters of Eve!

still wont stop it from happening thou, personally dont see why its so hard to not work out whos a macro user automatically except for a few cases and auto ban or warn a gm to go look at the them.
and i still dont understand why its such a big deal for the player base as a whole, if they think somones macro mining, steal his ore. simple as.

While I applaud CCP's efforts in crushing the scourge of macro miners (It must be lonely, being the ONLY company who even bothers), I feel it necessary to point out a few things:
1. These people are in it for the real life dollars. In the time it has taken to move against these 100 accounts, they have been able to sell in-game assets for WELL BEYOND the cumulative subscription fees they have shelled out thus far.
2. Having witnessed their mode of operation in other games (Everquest and Lineage come to mind), I can tell you right now that this action will do virtually nothing to stem the tide. These people have more experience at beating the system than CCP has at catching them. They already have dozens, possibly hundreds of accounts already trained, equipped and dormant - just in case their primary farming accounts get banned, they can simply re-activate their backups and be cranking out the ISK in under an hour.
3. They will continue assaulting the game (and that's what it is, an assault) until one of two things happens: a) EVE gets shut down or b) demand dries up. They are a business like any other, and like any business, they like to turn a profit. They can only turn a profit if they have a steady supply of customers. The only way to stop them is to ban their customers. Nothing else will work, because the farmers assume virtually no risk. There's always a new email address or credit card number, so they can keep creating new accounts and circumventing the EULA ad infinitum. But their CUSTOMERS...that's another story. They are violating the EULA as well, but they don't have an endless stream of credit card numbers, nor do they have the massive financial motivations (and they are MASSIVE. The secondary market for virtual items is worth millions per year).
Keep banning the sellers, as many as you can and as fast as you can...but you won't kill the problem until you ban the buyers.

I'm also quite worried by something else.
CCP have admitted macro use is on the rise. CCP have also realised they're getting more and more users online.
A very troubling coincidence. Maybe the new users are nothing more than macro vultures.

I say start blocking hardware MAC Addresses of the users network cards. Of these computers they use, how many have built in NIC's in the motherboard? Renders that NIC and motherboard useless to connect to Eve.
Not an easy implementation, but would work!!

(3) You may not use macros or other stored rapid keystrokes or other patterns of play that facilitate acquisition of items, currency, objects, character attributes, rank or status at an accelerated rate when compared with ordinary Game play. You may not rewrite or modify the user interface or otherwise manipulate data in any way to acquire items, currency, objects, character attributes or beneficial actions not actually acquired or achieved in the Game.
Since the mining lasers pull ore in at the same speed is a macro miner really violating the eula?
What defines ordinary gameplay when mining, a single person in a frigate or a person with 3 machines running 3 accounts mass mining in covetors with t2 strips?
Why is the loophole there?

I think you misunderstood my point.
CCP's EULA states macroing is illegal but adds the disclaimer "if it gives you stuff quicker then you'd get without the macro's" basically
Since mining is and always will be at a set fixed rate based on laser speed an nothing a macro can do will ever improve that rate no ones breaking the rules as written here.
As they wrote it I'm thinking it'd be perfectly legal to sit in front of a machine with a good book running a macro as long as you aren't afk or mining more ore then you could "normally", based on the assumption that the afk part is what makes it illegal as you can not "normally" acquire goods while afk.

Exactly. Many NIC's these days will actually let you set the MAC to whatever you like, as will most DSL modems, routers etc.

But under normal play, the mining lasers would stop as soon as your hold was full. These macros mean you can walk away and leave your handful of accounts there, and they'll mine the entire belt, and haul it into the station. The first gives you 1 cargo hold full, for zero attended play. The other gives you every roid in range.
Entire belt > 1 cargo hold full.
Therefore the macro user has gained an advantage.
You can do anything. But you can't do everything. |

False, the cheapest NPC trit source is Coupling Arrays, which yield a bit over 800K trit and 80 Megacyte and I think a few bits of Isogen, and cost 2.5m each. Bringing the cost of trit to around 2.1/ipu - 2.4/ipu depending on how you value the Megacyte for. Also, Coupling arrays are 4km3. Try stuffing 800K of trit in a 3.9Km3 giant can...you can only fit 390K.
Get the word out, and say NO to inflation

Errr...did I read this correctly in the player news?! They actually admit that financial gain determines CCP's ban policy.
Why not award macro-ers with a permanent ban to start with? Macro-ing undermines the Eve economy like nothing else does. But wait! Macro-ers also hold quite a few accounts. Ergo, CCP don't want to lose their ca$h, and don't care if the game suffers as a result.
If you want to grow and prosper as a MMORG, you have to keep the game clean, am I not right? Who wants to play a game with cheaters?
CCP, shame on you!

They banned another very large network a few months back. Also, 100 accounts is a pretty large chunk. Add to ti the macroers we don't hear about it..yes, I'd say they're doing alright. It takes a lot of work to trap macroers fairly.

Unmasking the MAC is not too difficult, you just have to have to right firewall/sniffers built! Any tech idiot can type a MAC address in your DSL router or spoof the address on your NIC, but how many of these macro miners "farming isk" are going to be able to do that???
I'd put my money on blocking the MAC addresses!

of corse u can go afk wile mining (ice) cause when your mining ice, with max skills and tech 1 ice harvester, it takes 7min to mine 1 unite of ice per laser. :P so of corse u can go afk for thoes 7min and then come back and drag the ore to the cargo can like normal.

In 2004, Jonathan Yantis (one of the "big dogs" of the virtual items market) sold his business to IGE for TENS OF MILLIONS in cash and IGE U.S. stock options. IGE's Hong Kong subsidiary operates *dozens* of internet sweat shops, where banks of computers run macroed computer games, tended by a single farmer who gets paid piecework for the game credits he farms.
We are talking a US$400,000,000 PER YEAR industry. With figures like that, it would be a joke to hire some high school script kiddie to come in and do it for them. Think back to when you were in high school. If someone came and offered you $2000USD to come spoof their NIC addy, how fast would you have run to their terminal farm?

A new Network card, cost around 0$....
MAC's can be spooffed.....
That is not an option
My problem is not macromining as such, but that the macrominers use starter systems to do their bussiness in. This brings on another problem for new players, no ore for them. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

You can only ban an IP, if its the same everytime, most providers give a new ip each time you log on to the net.
So you can ban the provider, or a certain range of IP's but i guess its hard if the provider operates out of countries like Russia,India or china. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

So you can ban the provider, or a certain range of IP's but i guess its hard if the provider operates out of countries like Russia,India or china.
That is a nightmare though, even in EU and US countries. You could easily end up banning the IP of innocent people.
Plus, even banning a static IP address might not be ok because there are communal residences with a shared internet connection. I'm a student; a friend of mine who plays EVE lives in a five person flat where they all connect via a router to a 4mb internet connection. If one of the other guys were to play and then macromined, and the IP was banned, he would be banned to for doing nothing wrong.
Problem with this business is 99% sure isn't enough. Even the famous Ming1-Ming18 (did they get banned?) were only 99% sure and as long as they stayed at 99% there was nothing CCP could do in good conscience.
Now it's just a case of developing better tracking technology for the future (like WoW has, controversially, suggested).

WOOT wonder how many of the 300 or so i reported got the axe.
I have to post some real good coments from a very bright and Deffinatly higher IQ than myself on the topic of macro's. Normally id linkage, but in a beta and NDA rules.
MORON1 Quote: However, that is not really the point. The point would be to keep people moving through the game at a decent pace. Instead of having to hunt wolves for 36 hours to get your skills up enough to start hunting Bears, some of this tedious work could be done while you were offline. Likewise, rather than having to spend 4 hours everyday crafting items for sale, you could have your crafter do this while you were offline and actually play a more enjoyable part of the game while you were online.
Hehe simple fix Play EVE!!!! Next, MORON1 Quote: I have used macros in several games. I have bought and sold items. I would likely do it again if there was any tedium
Lol See topic, and ahh Play EVE, but dont mine then Next, MORON1 Quote: <edit due to NDA > mmm what games exactly did macroing ruin? the only thing that macroing hurts is that it takes server bandwith/space while the person isn't sitting at his keyboard. I personally can't think of a single mmorpg that macroing in and of itself ruined. Gold farming ruins games sure no doubts there but GOLD FARMING ISN"T MACROING. who cares if bob is sitting at his comp while his char makes 5 million arrowheads or casts 1million fireball lev 1 at < edit But its a Super ebil loot dropping MOB ).. I sure don't
ANyone care to tell him? I did and he said they werent. My list included, EQ1/2, swg, WoW, UO, AO, blah blah blah *cough* E&B *cough* ( same people got caught here btw WOOTERS )
IQ factor tanking Please stand by......
MORON1 Quote: I bought a macro program for the first time because my finger was too sore to craft. I have found it to be very nice to have. I took my blacksmith to 150 and I am now raising tinkering. It cost me more gold to use the macro because I buy most of my iron from a shop keeper and the shop keeper will only buy so many of my non stackable crafts.
Ahhh i feel bad now ... Now my favorite, and also after calmly explaning 3 times on what macro's do to this macro user .... now dont forget the comments above plz...
MORON1 Quote: THAT IS GOLD FARMING NOT MACROING GET A CLUE MAN!
Ahhh nm dont play eve, we dont want you
Ok so i guess im wrong and he only has good intentions, You CANT power level toons and or farm game items and cash with macro's.............. Im so relieved now... Im going to hide in my little system and try and get my IQ to return...

A simple solution that will slow down massive macro mining:
A) Members of nuub corps are limited to 0.7 and higher sec. B) Members of NPC corps cannot go into 0.3 or below. C) Members of Pirate NPC corps cannot go into 0.3 or above.
Mining barges are not permitted in 0.7 or higher. Belts in 0.7 thru 1.0 are very broadly spread and contain relatively low yeild ores... requiring macros to move a long way between rather small rocks and that their haulers keep up... ect ect.
Player corps can declare war on NPC (non nuub) corps... for limited periods of time (1 war cycle with a 1 cycle lockout between declarations), but the cost is higher.

Thats not going to happen unless they give more highslots or better dronecapacity on the barges. And, most of the macromining smegheads I have seen are in Apocs or indys, so that wouldnt help anyway.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 16/09/2005 09:32:00 Great work,
but wtf is up with the second chance ?
If you catcha single IP running 10-20 clients with macros on them out of some sweatshop you actually think that anything but a permaban and isp action will prevent recurrence ?
This involves real money, it's not a simple case of an unintended exploitage or something comparable. In Eve,macroing serves only two purposes:
-gathering resources faster and while away -making isk for ebay
If you can differentiate between the two, then why the hell is there a seocnd chance for category #2 ? _______________________________________________

great work guys, keep it up.. but you missed the 20 or so macros that have still been stripping my home systemm uemisaisen clean.. i know you guys are working on it..and its harder cause this group has 1 or 2 at the keys.. but but..work faster...;p
the locals and i have been robbing them every chance we get. after about 30min to 2hrs, they finally move a system or two over. -but they come back within 12 hrs, and definately the next day..
i had hoped a week of this would make them move elswhere permantly (or at least go to isanamo, macro miner central)
but they keep coming back...
if i get fraps of all the mining beams in the group turning on at once, would that expedite matters at all?
anyway.. anyone who wishes to help them haul their ore, convo me ingame and i'll give you the list of macrorers... i have about 30+ names now i think.. (yes, all have been reported already)

Trust me it doesn't take much to spot them - try heading to Lustrevik some day and look in local - you'll see ming1, ming2, ming3, ming4, ming5, etc, etc. That's your first clue
Then just belt hop until you find a group of em - they'll be very tightly packed together with a jetcan in the middle. Fly right into the middle of them and bump them around. You won't get a response. Open the jetcan and take some ore and tell them on local that you'll put it back if they say something. You still won't get a response.
Congratulations, you just found some macro miners! Now petition and proceed to steal all their ore without fear of retribution from CCP
On a sadder note, I see most of the mings (10 of em anyway) are back in Lustrevik today along with 4 or 5 tommylee's and other known and petitioned macros - guess you missed some

I've suggested this 100 times, but perhaps it will have to be suggested 100 more times to get someone who can do something about it to pay bloody attention:
After 60 days, FORCE players to be in a player corp, or they cannot fly anything other than a rookie ship. PERIOD.
If CCP would allow players to police this crap, macro miners would be an insta-thing-of-the-past.
Instead, by allowing macro-miners to hide in NPC corps, it is yet one more way the GM's and Dev's diminish the game by tacitly endorsing yet another 0% risk--100% reward game mechanic.
If people wanna risk macro-mining - I say let 'em, but make them take the frikkin risk to do it. This isn't a difficult concept, is it?

Ok quick one before i head out, Sir you have my attention....
Ok, so if you were to tell me 100 times more that with no shred of anything, you and whoever else should be allowed rights to go around harrasing players you suspect of macroing at will.. (presume by this the object would be to force them to leave the game, or abandon their choice of play?)
Do you think it will make a shred of difference, as in 100 times more?
Im not even going to bother asking about the ncp corp idea, all ill realy say is, well it might sound funny n'all, but there's a fair few people that arn't alt's/cheats or whatever in npc corps.
Funny realy, were that the case, id imgine that there would be more honest decent people leaving the game than macro users.
Anyway, gl with your 100 post crusade, im sure there will be many that think your ideas are worthy of the devs notice:/ -----------

You guys are sooo Naive. The 15k plus players are in fact macro miners and similar ilk. You remember about 3 months ago when CCP said they were advertising hard in China/Korea, well BINGO!!!! The idiot pirates in game were like "Yarrr...more targets to shoot" well actually it was just an open invitation for every farmer/exploiter to come on into Eve and setup camp.
I think CCP is overwhelmed with the 2000-2500 + Macro miners now in the game, and its hard to tell the bean counters that they just banned all these paying accounts for cheating.
I've played 3 accounts in this game for over a year/half now, and the macro mining is finally getting to me. Why should I bore myself mining for hours to get ahead, when "Wang Chung" is running 8 Apocs next door 23/7. This doesn't just effect miners, it effects the entire Economy which is a "living" thing in itself, just like in RL.
I would like to see these players Banned. CPP knows who they are. Its so obvious when you have "Macro****oo1" through "Macro****oo15" all created on the same day, all in the same noob corp, and are all mining in a clump. I wish there was a way that we could shoot these guys.

Yeah because CCP see the MAC address...
Right?
I tried that a while ago when I was taking care of a cs server...
Turned out that the MAC address was always the same no matter who the player was. All I got was the MAC address of whatever the next hop into the internet was. So, I accidentally banned everybody

Well, most of the macrominers i see are in starter corps anyway...plowing the roids in reapers, with one guy in a hoarder.
This will not prevent anything, aslong as their is a demand for ingame commodities, and they reperesent a RL value, someone will try to break the rules, in order to earn some RL money.
The selling of Game related currencies or items, is a multi million dollar industry.
In countries like Russia,India,China,Indonesia,Vietnam and some Middle and sout american countries, this is a viable mean to sustain life and to feed your family. They work these sweatshops, not because they like playing games, but because nothing else is avaible.
The only thing you can do is to go after those who buy the commodities.
But that repesents another problem, Games like EVE need players in order to survive, and i dont think they will go after the one player who has RL cash to spen, to buy a head start.
It is problem that bites its own tail. I can understand that CCP feels cheated, because someone earns money from their product, and they should.
I dont know what the solution is or could be, but maybe MMORPGS in the future will set up shop themselves, and that way control their commodities out of game, instead of letting that bussiness goto someone not affiliated with their company. If they could corner the market, controling the value, then the problem would be much smaller. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

There are probably 500-1000 macroers online at any one point in time on the server.
100 accounts is a start, however that low number coupled with "second chances" is kind of weak on CCP's part IMO.

If people wanna risk macro-mining - I say let 'em, but make them take the frikkin risk to do it. This isn't a difficult concept, is it?
That really won't help. War decs can cost in the 10-100's of millions if you declare one against a large alliance. If wars were free, it would work.
Oh, it would work allright. Wars cost 2 million isk/week, maybe up to 10 mill/week. I make that in 5 minutes of playtime. And if the macroers would actually band up in an alliance and force someone to pay 100 mill a week, it would lead to much rejoicing and hilarity as their false sense of security. Of all people they should know how easy it isw to make isk.
But, this is not feasible. CCP has left it far too late to make such a radical change to the game. I don't for a second believe they'd have the balls to do that. The amount of whining it would cause would put the missile nerf to shame.
But, there is some hope. Ore thieves will find macro miners and infinitely more attractive target once the miners that are actually at their keyboard get to defend themselves. If enough do it, attention might turn towards the not so attentive miners.

Since the mining lasers pull ore in at the same speed is a macro miner really violating the eula?
What defines ordinary gameplay when mining, a single person in a frigate or a person with 3 machines running 3 accounts mass mining in covetors with t2 strips?
Why is the loophole there?
Underlined some stuff for you, but in short, macros are illegal, being a macro miner, by definition, is illegal. The macro setup allows the miner to work just as if someone was playing, meaning it mines 24/7, and never stops, ever. If you're good, and most people are, they have extra things added to their bots to get new ships, re outfit, store, sell...whatever, so it's not always a simple mine, dock, drop, undock, repeat.

the idea of forcing people to get into a player corp is absurd.
i'm a two month old player. my player run corp has 80% playrs with less than 2 months of play time.
4 corps have war dec'd us. all of th em have players 1.5 years or older and wanting a 2b buyout.
if the abuse of the war dec system isnt dealt with, forcing people in player corps which are then obliterated by mercs and general jerks who like pirating in secured space the game will lose players and fast.

we need some way to war dec on MMs
how about an upgrade to the bounty hunter contract system ie i spot a suspected MM - i can offer a contract to another player (only 1) that player can then shoot the other player in question without concord.
SO i see a MM petition it - get my alt :) issue a bounty contract for said player - my alt can shoot on contract ? maybe the issuer pays concord a 1M a week bounty to avoid having the person carrying out the "hit" being ganked
Similar to the ore theif system.
Just a suggestion

Sorry mate, this isnt the USA. You cant just put a bounty on someone because YOU think they are using macros. What is stopping you from doing that to just anybody you dont like?
And for the idea of forcing players into a corp after XXX days, that is a bad idea, at least until they fix the war-declaration issues.

I've just myself seen my first macro miners. I didn't like the sight, but there really wasn't anything I could do (except transfer their ore to my own can and blow it up). However, this made me think about what could be done about it, and I had a (maybe stupid) idea.
How about giving 'Prize Money' to whoever spots and reports macro miners? The reason I'm thinking about this is that the bunch I saw had 3 Apoc's, one other ship I didn't look at and a transport. If you add their equipment, that's a fair bit of money. What I would suggest is that whenever a player causes one or more macro miners to be caught, they get 'Prize Money' of say 2-3% of the value of the confiscated property. This way there'll be an incentive to report macro miners, but the money will not be too good. It will be VERY good money for all new players who're frequenting the asteroid belts in Empire and should make people extra willing to report macro miners.
Just my $0.02

Im surprised ccp was able to ban even 100 macro miners since when it comes down to bug losses they dont have the software to find out what went wrong. I think if ccp would get off thier arse and add software to assist in thier daily tasks like this they would be able to ban these ppl faster and with more precision so they wouldnt need to give second chances out. But hey thats just my opinion.
