I've searched the forums, I've searched through the dev blogs, but I can't find the info on this thing people keep talking about.
So, what is it? What will happen to make ore thieves stop? When does it happen?
thanks for the info

The plan to stop ore thieving is already implemented, it's called secure containers.

Yea these are awesome. They can't be anchored in .7 or up. They can't be anchored within 5k or anything and they hold less than 1 mining cycle of a covetor. Secure cans 4tw.
Why CCP doesn't make secure cans the same way they make POS parts is beyond me. Launch them and when you anchor them they expand. How hard would that be?

eerh, isn't that obvious ? ...Because they don't want your ore to be safe.
CCP could instead of this whole intricate flagging system thing where a miner can shoot a thief and the thief can shoot back simply have implemented uber secure containers with like 1 million m3 cargospace and stuff.
Instead, they want you to be responsible for your own safety and theft protection, so they give you an ability paired with an added risk.
That's the Eve way. _______________________________________________

I wanted to say that.. but seriously.. if your using a cov. you either have a dedicated Alt hauling. or have mates hauling.
Secure cans serve ONE purpose, the smalls, good advertising/small storage. the Bigs.. to allow noobs to thing theyre mining safely... provided they can find a big enough ship to fit the can in!
Give cans a better USE. not have a can with a hold of like 1mil m3 but have a can that can hold 20km3.. but is 9000m3 in size ;)

What would that accomplish ?
Oh yes, that any halfskilled hauler could carry one, and that mining into secure cans would end the ore thief.
May I point you to my earlier post ? The 1 million m3 thing was sarcastic, 20K m3 serves as the same thing. _______________________________________________

Avon And Rod are right, we dont need bigger sec cans. Nice as they might be :) But despite their views jet can mining is the single fastest way to mine in the game. Especially if you are using a covetor or some other ship that mines a lot of ore quickly.
The downside to jet can mining is the risk of someone pinching the ore. Even if flagging is implemented it wont stop ore theft and it shouldnt. Its part of the game and easily avoided anyway.

Yea, it's obvious. I simply do not understand WHY CCP wants to make mining so difficult. I find absolutely non-sequiter that you would have secure cans that don't even hold one cycle worth of ore?
I know that that within EVE there is this rivalry between pvp/pve/mining/trading/mission running. But there is absolutely no way all you BOB guys would be so casual if CCP implemented something so silly with regard to PVP. I know this because I see the posts regarding aggress timers, safespotting, missile nerfs, tracking, scan probes etc.
So, take jet cans out of the equation because they are not safe. If you mine in a barge you have two choices. Plant secure cans 5k from everything, mine one cycle, fly to them and dump, repeat until how ever many cans are full then get a hauler and collect, or you can fill your hold and fly to station and empty.
IMO this would be the same as allow any fighting ship to hold 1 round of ammo per turret or launcher. To which I would make the argument that you (PVP guys) could pre-launch secure cans to hold your ammo where you need it, have someone in a hauler fly next to you with extra ammo or you could fly back to the station each time and get more. How would like that?
Mining and Industry are just as much a part of this game as anything else. So not having a workable solution to securing ore in the belt is silly and puts more grind to industry than is necessary absent using unsecure jet cans.

I know there are several of you here that feel (maybe because you think that forum whoring makes you a celebrity whose words we all wait with baited breath to read) the need to reply to every single thread and every single response to every single thread; it's lost on me.
The original poster made a valid point, that so far no one (even the smarter posters) has yet to adequetly address. Personally I think it's lame that every time CCP changes a turret, missile or combat mod the forums are inundated with PVP'er whining about it. Then someone posts something that actually makes sense (big enough secure cans to make mining a bit less of a grind) and the same guys who whine in the other threads are here telling miners to "suck it up" or "adapt".
Sorry to burst your bubble(s) but this is a valid issue, whether you mine or not.

What's so difficult about it? It's more challenging this way, but it's hardly difficult.
Why not just glut the game with massive mining abilities, so that everyone can get rich overnight, and afford everything the game has to offer so that everyone can do everything within the first month of playing?
CCP's gonna ruin this game by listening to impatient whiners.

Point taken, but I wasn't referring to the BOB posters I was referring to the guy who I quoted. There are several (Not Joshua Calvert) people who I constantly see replying to every single post on the board, whether they have something to add or not. Seems that guy is one of them. Besides BOB has better stuff to do than chase after miners...I hope.
Quote: Why not just glut the game with massive mining abilities, so that everyone can get rich overnight, and afford everything the game has to offer so that everyone can do everything within the first month of playing?
Here you have it, the crux of the biscuit. This goes back to my original post in this thread and that is a rivalry between the different aspects of the game. This is the reason cited for nerfing missiles, so noobs in Ravens couldn't get rich on lvl 4 missions. This is cited for pretty much everything, so I won't bother to list them.
Although this has some merit, it falls flat when you factor two things. The first is that having a bigger can is not going to increase the amount of ore mined. All it will do is prevent thieves from profiting from that ore instead of the guy who actually mined it. People have not given up mining because they can't secure their ore, they simply continue to mine knowing the risk. If you ignore what I just wrote and somehow, having a bigger secure can available to miners manages to cause a glut in minerals on the market, the price goes down and people get less for what they do. This is unlikely to happen however.
Bottom line here, CCP is going to do what CCP is going to do. I was always told the sqweaky wheel gets the grease. As a matter of fact I heard that was the exact reason that frigs got such a boost and BS got nerfed, frig pilots making alot of noise. Miners (who pay the same per month as everyone else) are just making a bit of noise.

Edited by: Kula Alpha on 19/09/2005 22:21:50 I don't understand how the proposed fix will work. One scenario: I'm peacefully mining away, in a cruiser or barge, deep in mining trance, daring to use a jet can. Up hauls this battleship see, and steals my ore. Now I understand that I'd free to blast him from space. Great. He transfers my ore, one holdful at a time to HIS jet can. Now I can steal from him... great. His friend arrives in a hauler, and I bid fond farewell to "my" Veldspar.
The proposal seems to differ from the current situation only in that the thief needs a large combat ship.
Would gang members be able to fire on the knavish rogue without incurring Concord terminal sanction?
Have I missed something, and would the proposed change actually prevent ore thieving?

The Devs don't have a problem with ore thieving. This change is only intended to give miners the chance to fight back. It's something (some) miners themselves have been asking for, for a long time.
It's true that it will not stop many thieves but that's not it's intention (AFAIK).
And as a footnote, maybe this means more ore thieves will use their mains.

When I first heard about criminal flagging of ore thieves I thought it was a good idea. Then I read the Crime and Punishment forum and quickly changed my mind.
For the reason posted in an above reply, miners are just going to get spanked if criminal flagging is the implemented "solution" to ore thievery. I can see it now, all the suicide alts that gank barges now will be able to do it without getting concorded because some guy in a barge decides to attack them if they nick some ore.
This solution would end up being a gankfest. Every wannabee pirate would come to empire for some easy kills. You know why noob/npc corps don't allow corpmates to shoot at each other in empire? Because every griefer would join a NPC corp and go to noob systems where the carnage would begin. Although this is different, the result would be the same.

Edited by: Avon on 20/09/2005 09:17:03 A little clarification about my view on this subject:
It has been suggested that my view is that of PvP vs Carebear. Whilst this would be of comfort to the miners, thinking that I hate all miners, it is unfortunately untrue.
What I object to at a basic level are people who want game mechanics to give them security instead of teamwork.
Again, don't think I am against solo players, because I am not. I know some very successful solo players (no, not you darth). They do their thing, and importantly take personal responsibility for their actions.
The thing I dislike about the whole ore theft / secure can debate is that fundamentally the miners want increased profit to be handed to them on a plate. They don’t want to work for it. They don’t want to interact for it. They just EXPECT it.
I always find it amusing when people moan about a thief, simply because they are complaining that someone is showing them what they should be doing. I don’t mean they should be going stealing, rather that they should have a hauler collecting their ore.
Success in Eve is brought about through teamwork. It should be playable solo, and I have no problem with that.
What I have a problem with are people who want all the rewards you would get from teamwork, but without the interaction.
Play the game, don’t let the game play you.

Maybe mission deadspace beacons lighting up in local when someone enters them? Yay for gank!
No, wait. I got it. Lvl 4 agents out of Rens and Ours, plz. Right now. The fix to the LP gain depending on security rating of the system was good and fine, but damnit. Get them *out* of secure space. Makes absolutely no sense that Gurista FLEETS have staging points in 0.8-1.0 systems anyway. ---

Press a few buttons and wait is hardly 'difficult'.
Originally by: Clutch Cargo But there is absolutely no way all you BOB guys would be so casual if CCP implemented something so silly with regard to PVP.
This entire discussion is about risk vs reward. PvPers place their rear ends in more dangerous situations than you every day, and get less money for it. They are not asking to get more ISK while having the danger taken away, so this is a moot point.
Originally by: Clutch Cargo So, take jet cans out of the equation because they are not safe.
Why should they be safe? Why should miners have a 'press a button and wait, 100% risk free' high end money machine when everyone else doesnt?
-Mission running is not risk free. Some missions lead into low security, and the runner could crash / get disconnected at the wrong place and lose their ship. Okay, the tutorial missions I did were risk free, but they were worth maybe 200k in one hour. You could mine 200k in one hour without any risk, too, using secure cans. More money = more risk.
-Trading is not risk free. A trader could end up investing in an item they cant sell, or sell for no profit, which means a loss of time at the very least. From what I gathered so far, the more profitable trade runs lead into low security.
-Piracy as a means to earn millions DEFINITELY is not risk free.
-I'm not 100% sure about research, but I remember reading there is no guarantee to ever get anything from the time invested in it. Thats a risk too, a high chance of wasting your time.
-Ore thiefing is not risk free (yes some people use suicide frigs, and kudos to them!), its not even very profitable. If you have a covetor, I'm pretty sure you make much more ISK / hour (even if stolen from occasionally) than the ore thief.
Originally by: Clutch Cargo So not having a workable solution to securing ore in the belt is silly and puts more grind to industry than is necessary absent using unsecure jet cans.
Grind is the endless repetition of mind-numbing tasks over and over. Having a secure vault with 50'000m3 of space would not make mining more entertaining, or less repetitive.
Those players who are not afraid of placing their assets in a dangerous situation once in awhile are having more fun than you.

Eeerhm, earth to carebear, pvp'ers mine too, pvp corps have industry too, pvpÚrs sometimes even get theri ore stolen too ! We run missions, kill npc's, we play the same game as you do.
The difference ?
We don't expect anything for free. Jetcan mining is NOT the intended mining mode. You want that changed so that the risk introduced by it (ore theft) is negated without any excertion on your part.
Sorry, but that's not how eve works.
And what about pvp'ers asking for a logoff timer ?
A logoff timer fixes something that was NOT supposed to be the standard way of keeping yourself safe from getting shot at in low sec or 0.0. It solves an exploit.
Now, when CCP come here and tell us ore theft is an exploit instead of a risk that balances out jetcan mining then I'll be the first to suggest larger secure cans as an obvious solution.
But they have not, and will not, because this is Eve where you are supposed to actually do something to get the higher return for your time. _______________________________________________

I don't mind about thief. I just want that CCP give me chance to fight back. For him it was easy omber for us nothing but log of
Someone said that thing not to be easy. I saw that thing is easy for someone to steal. Or even to ransom a miner in a secure zone (Search a post for that) ruining someone playing
Rod as you said nothing is for free. If you stole in secure actually it's free :)
Would you try to stole a jetcan in a belt, with a cloaked Iteron if there's a Ferox, or Inty gun's ready to retaliate?
What some player ask for, it's a change of the mecanism. Maybe in secure can, maybe in flagging, maybe in jetcan. Some people don't ask for an instant podding, but something different than being a sheep offer to butcher knife.
I knew that some player just want big can to mine without any risk, half afk and so. But there's some other player who just want to play.

Use a secure can for ore transfers - they are plenty big enough for that.
Or, just blow the damn thief up.
So what if you take a sec hit and concord kill you? You kill the thief, and if you are lucky you might get a nice cargo expander which would make it worth your effort. ______________________________________________

Giving the players what they want != game balance.

Every prey needs a predator to keep it in check. Carebears without griefers to counteract them are worthless.
Of course, the reverse applies just as well. Where is the griefer without his prey? ---

added a whole lot to what was being posted. If you read what I wrote immediately after that about petitions, customer service ET AL. You will see what I was getting at.
IMO this is really a dead issue. It comes down to several things. There are several "competing" aspects to game play. These different aspects cross complain about the pros and cons of the others. I do not expect to get any support from PVPers about a mining issue. I do not expect support from 0.0 players about empire issues. The only people I expect to feel the same way as me are people who are doing what I do and enjoying the same aspect of the game as I do.
So it is really not sequiter to compare mining in alliance 0.0 space with mining in empire. You cannot compare alliance industry in secure 0.0 space with industry in empire. I am sure I am going to hear from those that do and why I am wrong, that's fine, I expect it.
So if you think that it is fair play to have secure cans that cannot be anchored in .8 or higher, that cannot be anchored 5k near anything and can only hold one cycle of a large barge, my continued arguments are going to be lost on you, so I won't make them.
I made my peace about this issue in this thread and others. As with PVP'ers, mission runners, traders ET AL, I am voicing my opinion about an issue I think needs to be resolved. We can all agree to disagree about how important or valid it is; But just like those other groups I am allowed to address issues within a game (that I also pay to play) that I think need to be resolved. That is what I am doing.
EDIT:

Clutch, these placement restrictions were not always there. They were introduced to remove some serious issues with cans, mining, noobs and even exploits. You may not like them, but the game is definately better the way things are. ______________________________________________

Regarding Winterblink, it was an observation, not an attack.
Quote: Clutch, these placement restrictions were not always there. They were introduced to remove some serious issues with cans, mining, noobs and even exploits. You may not like them, but the game is definately better the way things are.
I remember clusters of cans in belts. I remember placement of cans near gates to thwart jumping. So I understand that most of issues with cans are for good reason.
I broad stroked cans to illustrate the issues that miners have. On a personal level I don't share all of those issues. The one I do share is that cans are way too small. Only noobs in frigs can effectively use even the biggest secure cans. If that got resolved, the rest are livable.
I think having portable, expandable, secure cans would do the trick. You jet them and they expand like POS equipment. If they are left unused in space for the same time as a jet can, they pop. Leave the same anchoring restrictions in place and IMO you have a workable solution.
I think with that, I have completely covered my position and I will let the rest of you bat this ball around now.

I wouldnt mind them, if they used their mains. (No I dont care if you forum ho's use em because thats what your going to post, you represent a small % of EVE players.). Fly around Rens, Jita, ammold, etc etc.
Every single one is obviously an alt, if they do happen to be in a war'dec'able corporation, guess what they either use another alt or just dont log onto that character till you get bored. I can give you the names and corpses of many of the ones who hang around the above areas.
Also, PVP'ers stop whining, you guys whine about absolutly everything be it missle nerfs, gun changes and omg you cant stack lasers - WTF, oh and it gets fixed next patch? Some of us dont have a chance in the research profession, people undercutting, bpo dropping issues etc. So. STFU.

Every MMO I've ever played had resource gathering of some form or another.
It's the first step in the crafting process, kind of important...
Just think of how many ppl in this game mine on a regular basis, I'd say close to 80%...
Some of you continue to bark up the wrong tree, and wish the game was Griefer Online, and not EVE Online...
Lets all face facts, mining on a whole as a game mechanic needs an overhaul, including the jet can/ore thief debacle...
CCP is trying to fine tune an engine that needs an overhaul...
Just replace the engine CCP, you'll never get this one running right, it's been missing since beta...

Hmmm, Everquest (1) and DAoC had no resource gathering. The resources were on the market, and the crafting worked just fine. AO had resource gathering that was INTERESTING, it required actual exploration, a bit of luck, and it was risky. The risk part was what made it fun and worth playing.
Pushing buttons for hours while reading a book is NOT fun, its the most horrible grind ever... even miners complain about it. The game would be better off if mining for common resources was removed and replaced with something more interesting... aka exploration, and rarer but more valuable resources to be discovered in small quantities.
Originally by: Bhaal Just think of how many ppl in this game mine on a regular basis, I'd say close to 80%...
If you paid attention to the thread, you will have noticed the comment about pirates who mine. Yes, pie-rats mining. If you bothered talking to some of them, you might also notice that some WANT the ore thiefing nerf. They hate boring gameplay. The ore thief nerf would make resource gathering more interesting.
Originally by: Bhaal Some of you continue to bark up the wrong tree, and wish the game was Griefer Online, and not EVE Online...
Are the mines in minesweeper griefing you? (Yes Ikvar, I stole that from you.)

Hell yes it does. See points above. I'd hate to see Carebears quit the game or turn into babbling loonies because pushing buttons 10 hours a day has driven them insane.

I like that there are ore thiefs. It does make what I do alittle more engaging. I also like the idea of settling the score. EVE has a good set-up right now RE: the relationship between mining, the different containers, and the risk of getting de-ored.

Then collect everything whenever u want in a hauler..saves u a lot of big warps and u dont need an alt/buddy.

People want huge secure containers and/or an Alt Hauler to take care of the mined ore.
The best thing would be to implement on-site transformation of ore into money. Also, mining should give five times the money/reward for zero risk.
I consider myself a carebear, but it is ridiculous to whine if you just made 4000 m¦ ore and are not able to have friends or alt characters to help you haul it away safely.
Heck, people want to the ore to secure-fly, refine and sell by itself.
Introduce some risk for ore thieves. Give miners the ability to fight back. Damn, this would mean they would have some non-mining drones, mount a single laser or have a noob friends frigate guard them from the evil ore thief in his up-to-the-teeth armed(&dangerous) industrial.
I am greatly in favor of miners being able to fight back ore thieves, but it seems as if they do not want to do anything for their money.
They want the money to go straight to their account, getting help, being prepared to defend ore or to secure it - hell no!
Risk vs Reward. People who jetcan know what can happen if an indy pilot passes by.
Besides that, I absolutely agree to everything Avon said, he was just not as sarcastic as I just was.

1 make a bigger secure can who holds more than 1 cycle of ore
2 make a 50 k can with a 2 or 3 digit password who is 10k m3 flattpackaged kosts 500 k isk and decays in 24 hours. its not posible to de ancor it when packaged out. it hangs out there to its destroyd in 24 h

Well after last night when some ore thievies took kindly to my container I noticed that there is no way of doing anything, ok we know you can't fire without concord helping them, you can't add bounty if they are 0.0+, you can't start a war as they are in a npc corp. So tell me what are you meant to do? I normally read these threads and have noted jetcan mining is a risk and that ccp don't care as jetcan mining isn't really meant to happen as if you jet something it means you don't want it. I also know that as stated above secure cans are the method that ccp intended for mining. All that aside though there should be at least something that we can do ie bounty etc etc because at current ore thievies run about laughing as technicial you can't do anything unless you wish to lose a ship and more isk. Would I say its a loop hole.....yes a bloody big one!

If you posted from a player corp you would have more credibility tbh.
The answer is, shoot them anyway - or use sec cans, or mine in quiet systems, or get a friend to haul your ore, or keep your ore in your hold ...
Your failure to take precautions allowed the thief to take your ore. You choose your mining style. You take the risk.
Who's fault is it that you leave the stuff you want floating in space?

Edited by: Hulredi on 22/09/2005 15:01:09 ok this is what I was told along time ago and dont remember who told me sorry I am old.
Jet cans were not intended for mining they were intended for garbage that nobody wanted, but the miner adapted as you can make more isk/hr if you jet can mine over any other means. CCP was going to change it but then the ore thief came along and it created a risk for the jet can miners and CCP felt that it was a good fix for the jet can mining 'exploit' as they referred to it. So please stop complaining about it or CCP might remove the use of Jet can Mining.....or not anyway.

Hi All,
In my opinion a player who jetcans ore must respect the fact that there's the risk of theft if adequate precautions are not taken (secure cans and a buddy hauling). Likewise with the implementation of criminal flagging ore thieves must understand that there will be a risk if they steal ore. As has been suggested (sorry, forgot who said it) this could be "worked around" with a thief in a BS and a buddy hauler.
The underlining themes here are those of risk and teamwork. If a miner has a buddy hauling they can do a 50%-50% split and still make a lot of isk (as they are more productive), while at the same time mitigating the risk of ore thieves. On the other hand if an ore thief has a few buddies he can probably steal ore without any serious risk.
From my (admittedly little) experience in the Eve universe those two words define the foundations upon which it is built. Without risk there's little need for teamwork, and without teamwork there's little way to mitigate risk.

As this was my first post on the topic I find your comments to be a little insensitive and short-sighted. Each and every person is permitted to post their opinion on any topic (subject to moderation, of course). If you have any issues with this then I suggest that you email your grievence to [email protected].
In the meantime if anybody has a contribution to make to the thread, please continue to do so. This is an active topic as criminal flagging for ore theft has yet to be introduced, and as such everybodies opinion counts. It is also likely to be an active issue afterwards as people will be posting with feedback on how it works, so it's likely to be "beaten" a little more in new threads yet Sulan.

*Alfarin is confused.
Where sorry, could you please clarify how I have duplicated a thread? I referenced both yours and Siren Shiva's replies and posted my opinion, nothing more. Thanks in anticipation.

I like that there are ore thiefs. It does make what I do alittle more engaging. I also like the idea of settling the score. EVE has a good set-up right now RE: the relationship between mining, the different containers, and the risk of getting de-ored.
