I realize this question is tough to pinpoint, its not all one way or the other.
30% I'm flying one of my preferred ships/fits
60% I'm flying something that I'm pretty happy with, but its a pain in one way or the other; MWD instead of AB, or a ship that I'm lower skilled with than my primary racial, or just something that I have to fly back to a staging point to get setup. Still a good fleet and one I'm happy to be in, but I often think 'damn, this would work better with "x", or Ugg this thing is so slow compared to "z".
10% of the time I suck it up and fly something that I would rather not just to fill a slot in the doctrine. Those fleets are rewarding in their own way and its something that over the long term is good to do, but I wouldn't do it more than 10% of fleets.

I always fly the doctrine ships with the proper indicated fittings, because only properly fitted doctrine ships are eligible for reimbursement in my corp/alliance, because fleets work best when fittings are homogenous between ships of the same type and role, because the fleet commander needs to know the capabilities of every ship in their fleet in order to be maximally effective, and because the fits we use are debated carefully among many people in my alliance with way more experience than me and therefore mine may not actually be a better fit.
Debates and suggestions for new fittings or alterations or even entirely new doctrines are welcome of course and often do lead to change. Malcanis for CSM 8 Module activation timers are buggy - CCP please fix |

I'd say 55% of the time I'm flying what I want to fly because we have no doctrine or I'm flying solo. The rest of the time I'm not in the right ship for the job. Professional bad guys were unfortunately not available so instead they sent me. Voter response is quite good this time around: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qCaz2OlMecY/UWhTTh_NfFI/AAAAAAAAPOE/ryjfQkApycs/s1600/05.jpg |

Fleet doctrine is fine as long as its defined loose enough to keep people coming to fleet up
Shield or Armor, after that you just ask that you have the basics covered ie tackle, support (logi, ecm). As long as you don't try to dictate what exact ship to fly people will be happy with what they fly.
When I Fleet up I find out which fleet type it is, frigate/dessie, cruiser, etc then ask if they need logi or dps and fly according to what is needed.
So I always show up in a ship I'm more than happy to fly otherwise I wouldn't have taken the time to buy, build and put it where it is needed in the first place. |

Caviar Liberta wrote:Fleet doctrine is fine as long as its defined loose enough to keep people coming to fleet up Sure. There's a list of ships that are acceptable to bring (including categories that include multiple ships e.g. ewar, fast tackle, stealth bombers, dictors, HICs, etc.) and fittings that are acceptable for each. For the non-SRP ships there are recommended fittings but people are free to choose their own (and of course they get flamed if their fit is stupid). For the SRP ships the fits are doctrine-specific and mandatory.
If you can't fly a properly fitted ship appropriate to that doctrine then you have no business being in that fleet. Malcanis for CSM 8 Module activation timers are buggy - CCP please fix |

Oh wait... RvB... We simply fly whatever we wish so long as it fits the size requirement for an arranged match and is something we wish to lose. |

I joined up as Armour logi. Skilled at it too and the Alliance is 100% shield. I have 9 fully fitted Augorors that just collect dust.
Currently training for the Osprey with a T2 fit.
But to be fair no logi player can ever get by just by specializing on either of the two. You have to be versatile.
And armour fleets will come in time
Other than that I don't have a single fit that features weapons. I am a logi/scout pilot so whenever it's time to break out the naga fleet or arty fleet or glass cannon fleet I'm going there as T1 tackle.
But I have never been in a fleet I didn't have a good time in so no complaints. We miss you Saede. |

I'm normally happy with everything I am asked to fly, so 90% I am happy with what I'm in and maybe 10% I'm not? My normal FC knows my strengths as a pilot and where he can use them, that's normally the roles I enjoy most as well because I'm good at them.
As for fittings I fly what I am told, if they want MWD and not AB then I fly MWD, if they want shield and not armour I fly shield. I'm not going to stop my fleet performing the way it should because I want to fly something which has no place in it. Lieutenant Turelus

Depending on which alt I'm flying, the "like to fly" percentage ranges between 50% and 100%. Fleet alts, usually jump in a logi -- as I have loved those ships since they became part of EVE.
