So EVEs openended PvP layout is a bad idea?
I sure as hell don't sit in my own filth all day every day and from some of the fiction read neither do those pilots.
Although lying around in a slimefilled egg would explain why charisma is such a useless attribute.

I like the idea !! sounds like I'm the only one tho maybe because I've no clue what/ how it happened in WoW/ EQ/ whatever... Of course we should have ways to avoid it carefully, and several ways to try to resist against the disease - medical trade goods, contraband goods, sikrits/ pirate cures, medical facilities; agent offers, long-term research... damn, I'm looking for a way which would not be strictly the usual and boring "PVE"-type content (btw, medical goods without any use for players, just as trading goods as they are, is quite ridiculous) Anything that gives "life" to our characters (that is, human weaknesses) would be great... and if we could be infected/ cured through interactions with other players, even better... I can't see how it would actually work, but still. And yes, it would "force" player into something - OMG, something would *happen* in the universe, *forcing* us to do something else than grinding missions for hours

I love this idea. At the very least introduce new contraband called "infected blood" that could be sold on the blackmarket.

"Think outside the box?" What, like stealing something from another game that most people here laugh at?
 bzzzt, thank you for playing.
Actually EQ2 did the plague before WoW. And that had the result of many players stopppign their accounts until the event was over. But that does explain why WoW stole the idea, they like to take failed experiments and fail in a even greater fashion.
EQ2 plague....it sucked, you character rturned green and vomitted etc. Even though it wasn't supposed to interfere with normal combat it did, it made you lose attack rounds. Slowly they removed the animations and effects one by one, until they finally removed it all early.
Now considering how many UBRS runs you had to do to get the generals blood i can only imagine how often peopel would be running the instance that infected players in WoW. Lack of fore thought for the lose...

I like the idea, but I don't see why disease would be more likely to crop up in a 0.0 base with few people around. More likely you would find a disease in a densely populated region like Rens. And you can bet your ass that if I get infected in my 0.0 home I'll spread it there to see what happens.
What's that? Concord kill people who've caught diseases? So, I have a random chance of acquiring something in a 0.0 station, which will kill me if I can't afford the 50 million isk price of the antidote (seriously, if the only people who want your product are going to die otherwise then you can quite easily charge the cost of all their implants for it), and while infected I can't go into empire to obtain the antidote in the first place?
I don't think you've thought this through very well.

Although Rens would be a bad place to be in once infected it would also be high on the quarantine list and more likely to have developed antidote.
Backwater systems with less political clout however may have to suffer the effects longer.
Something to scare the low security gatecampers with?

Your best bet is to mail them - I'm guessing that they don't read every thread - [email protected]. Right, I'll stop being all moderatorly now.
What you are talking about sounds like a decent idea to me. You wouldn't necessarily have to have a permanent game feature based around disease, but an ongoing series of events spanning a long-running storyline arc would be great. Of course, in light of this thread/dev blog even something like that probably isn't going to happen anytime soon.

first of all don't even compare it to the WoW disease. that was a mistake. not to mention it had no "cure", and only spread uncontrollably because it could latch on to NPCs who couldnt die of it, therefore creating perfect disease hosts, not to mention the fact tat if you afflicted with it you could die in under 10 seconds...
so please, if you're going to argue against diseases find a better argument than the disease in WoW. using WoW's disease as an example is der-der-derrrrrrrrrrr

Who is arguing against diseases and second why not use the only example I knew of to get across that it can be done and should be a factor in a persistant immersive world such as EVE.
I don't see why I should have to declare my opinions of WoW at the door for this idea to be validated. I never said 'let's copy WoW and make the exact same thing happen in EVE!' Cram some reading comprehension skills into that head of yours.

Instead of a biological disease, perhaps a computer virus would be more appropriate to Eve; affecting the functions of your ship rather than causing you to die (and so lose your implants).
Having said that, I'd prefer not to see either one.
Please let Eve continue to be about grand space battles rather than trying to turn it into sim-"life, the universe and everything".
If you want another random chance of death and destruction, how about introducing some random marauding bands of Jove (in the same vein as the "Reavers" in the TV series "Firefly"). I at least would appreciate a more tangible threat that I can shoot at (rather than some insidious and invisible threat).
Plagues limited to planetary populations, however, may be interesting to the extent that it may influence supply and demand in the market and ISD events (eg. mercy convoys of indies carrying medical supplies; which are then potentially subject to pirate attack).

Ok that was a nonsensical response, why bother with a post if you're not going to post why you're against it and what does the idea have to do with you being online playing EVE?
Adding purpose to you being on playing other than adding to the isk stockpile or getting that next ship would increase the immersion. Quests to save people from disease and if that's not tickling your conscience at least saving yourself from temporary setbacks such as death.

Edited by: Kiithnaras on 29/11/2005 02:12:53 ACtually, you do live your entire life in the pod in eve, except for the moments that you're forced out of it (and incidentally dead instantly), and recloned at a station before you're reinserted into your new pod. And as pods are airtight, it's impossible for a microbial disease to affect a pod-pilot.

I personally love this idea. The thing that I find is missing the most in Eve is the existance of a higher Gorverning Body. Of actually being apart of your Government's Navy.
Yeah sure we can have corporations, and alliances, but there is only so much a corporation can do. I personally would love to be a reservist, or active duty in the Caldari Navy, and get called up for emergencies of the state and report to a duty station to fight tangible bands of rats who are besieging a station. Instead of warping in, docking, hi Mr. Agent, oh the bad guys are over here? Okay let me go kill them real quick. Or actually have a use for the Blockade Runners... run planetary blockades and get relief supplies to ground troops or civilians.
It would be simply awesome to have wars break out between the Caldari/Gallente, or the Amarr/Minmatar. At the heart would be biological diseases planted by spies or some such. With large military advanced from different sides taking and besieging solarsystems and planets. Wherein players can bolster the ranks of NPC navies, or loyal corporations could lead daring attacks against them. And plagues could play a very nice role inside this.
As plagues combined with wars could be a great way of removing the immense core system populations and forcing people to leave. With Gallente able to freely attack Caldari and vice versa, you'd have deep range thrusts aimed at mining and traders who are hiding deep behind the front lines. Self sustained raiding parties who operate to disrupt trade and wreak havoc. Especially with Titans and Carriers being added to the fleets, you could literally move some 200+ ships deep into Gallente space and operate as trade disruptors, or sneak through the lines and warp in from the rear during a pitched battle for a planet.
I'd leave the devs here to plot out the details of it all, but certain missions where you have to get medical supplies/plague cures to a planet before the Navy decides to nuke the place sterile to prevent it from spreading certainly sound appealing to me. It should be a very very tough mission, with a really nice reward if you manage to do it in time.
I really think wars between the 4 factions, with politics, sieges... even if we don't ever land on the planets, just breaking the siege would be cool. Or running supply mission for the siege ships, or keeping the Orbital bombardment stations/magnetic rock throwers secure from sallies and attempts to break the siege. Just... something other than mining, PvP, and mission whoring, while they do have diverse parts... they kinda do get boring. Letting players into National politics would really spice things up imnsho. One mistake with UO they made was getting rid of the Seers, who gave players the opportunities to perform quests, get special rewards, and do something other than craft bows, or farm Earth elementals. Eve, like UO, is a diverse and very open ended place... but once you've established yourself... there isn't much you can't do... and I think that's a mistake, there should be alot more in this game that is near to impossible, that have heavy prices and dire stakes. Running a Gallente blockade and helping to free a Caldari planet could earn you a commission in the Caldari Navy as a rear-admiral or some such, with the option of commanding a Navy Raven, or Navy Scorpion that is built and crewed by the Caldari State, where you're given a duty station and orders, and after a time(If you accept) you're freed from the duty station and get to keep the ship.(If you survived)
Just an idea I had after reading through this all.

Ideas for increasing the immersion to stretch beyond that of the 'who is on the billboards and how is he doing on them killboards?' is good.
I'm sure there will be a market from where you can buy the cures from those who go about finding them for those who want to keep things simple but at least give the rest of us up for the challenge a chance at greater immersion and gameplay depth.

While I think that a microbial disease may introduce some new challenges into Eve I have to agree with Kithnaras that you spend your entire life in the pod. The plausable reason that CCP give is due to cloning limitations as without the pod the cloning process may fail.
Refer to the Scientific Article on "The Capsule and The Clone" specifically refer to the cloning section which says: Originally by: Cloning All the equipment needs to do is detect a breach in the pod, because û as every cadet has hammered into his head from the moment he starts training û pod breach, without exception, spells doom for the person inside. Therefore, the instant the egg begins to break, two things happen: the wire-cap on the pilotÆs head injects an instantly lethal nanotoxin into his bloodstream and the scanner sends its piercing light into his skull. Scarce seconds later, he begins the muddy climb towards consciousness in a new body, light years away.
Now while I think that it may be an interesting idea, CCP would need to change the Backstory (or alter current story) in order for this to affect pod-pilots. |

The evidence you cite relates only to "pod breach". Intentional disembarkation within a controlled, station environment is not pod breach.
For the record, I think the idea has potential both in gameplay and roleplay terms.
Incidentally, any pilots concerned enough about losing their expensive implants to a viral infection will surely be sensible enough to keep a good stock of anti-viral agents in their hangars, I'm sure you'll agree.
