Didn't work for me; the batch file tries to call "java" but with several java's in my path (thanks DOJ, Sun) it doesn't get whatever it needs from the java installed.
I tried changing the batch file to explicilty path a java, but then all I got was a message about passing across the skills xml file.
So, I guess I'm too thick to use it

For some reason that opened the java file and showed me a bunch of routines.
I updated my java from Sun and magically it's working...
Thanks. Interesting utility.

Glad you can finally enjoy it
I don't want to distribute windows "exe" files and the file doesn't refer to any mail API, so the functionality is the way it is.
If more people were to respond positively and with their commments then I could (would) improve as requested,
But TBH ...,
Most people only complain when something doesn't work and have no idea about the work behind getting the simplest of EVE applications up and running.
So your classification of Quote: Interesting utility.

Like all tools it needs to solve a problem for it to be useful. For me, it's just about to save me having to log into eve and check how my skill training is ongoing since I can just get a new xml file down, load it up, and check there.
And then I won't need to download again until I change skills since I *know* when it'll be completing.
So - that's useful.
However, as with all tools, there are ways that it could be improved. e.g. suggesting training a learning or advanced learning skill would all x number of skills to be trained quicker in real time. But bloat is always a worry - many features and tools start to get a learning curve that is imho not worth it. Lots of the spreadsheets and character development apps are like this - probably fantastic once you get into them, but I cba to get into them. Your tool isn't like that - it just does it's job.
I know development of tools isn't easy. This tool is probably one that would be better as a web application you upload your xml too - then we don't need to run java locally. You'd also get an idea of how many people were using it then too...
KEEP WRITING USEFUL, INTERESTING TOOLS!
Thanks

Jaabaa, very cool tool! Will use this frequently.
A couple of things...
You might want to add a quick readme.html on how to use it (I didn't have any problems, but reading this thread I can see the need).
Do you know of a way to get the xml file without hitting the EVE web site, selecting My Char, logging in, selecting My Char (again), choosing the Character you want the XML data for, then (finally) right clicking and downloading the XML? (I guess I am hoping for something like wget so I can automate it with a batch file or something... LOL).
Finally, how about a feature request? I think it would be really cool to be able to save a .vcs (vCalendar) file of when your current training is going to expire. That way you could import it into your PIM (I use a Palm device, but it would work on most anything that has a calendar interface on your PC.)
Thanks again for the Skill Planner!

Hey Jaabaa,
Answering your question on continuing development. My vote is yes! I just tried your tool today and had 0 problems (I work in IT, so I may have a 'leg up' though - maybe Vanna's suggestion of a readme file would be a good idea, I would go .txt though).
I agree with Zakgram that the tool is useful as is, and doesn't really need many extra features. But I also agree with Vanna Anne that a simpler way to get the xml data would be great (possibly a feature add?). I really like her suggestion of being able to create a *.vcs file (I use a Palm too). Possibly the vcs file could have an alarm 10% of the time before completion?
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments.
I don't want to mess about with account names and passwords or any of that stuff that might make people suspicious of using it. I find that saving the XML yourself where and when you want is the best option.
I'm not sure about making a VCS file, as it's easy enough to enter an entry in your calender application of choice yourself. I mainly use it to figure out how I can piece together my training to match RL commitments, sometimes splitting training into 2 or more blocks when I am away on business.
I do agree that I should make a readme file explaining exactly what you need to have to run the application and how to use it. User documentation was never my strong point
I was thinking of adding an "Add skill" feature, so you can add a skill to the planner just to see the training times, and maybe a way of adding or switching implant bonuses to allow people to see what effect those extra few points would have on their training times, the same for the learning skill levels too (atm I just make a 2nd copy of CCP's XML file and fiddle about with that). A kind of "what would happen if .." analysis option. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Using this on a Linux desktop with Sun's Java Runtime:
The Attributes Table at the top is slightly messed up. The 'Intelligence' entry appears to the right of the 'Base Value' header, with the row containing both the 'Bonuses' and 'Intelligence' values. I can get a screenshot of this if it is needed.
When starting the application, I get 2 messages in my console: Skill "Electronic Sharpshooting" not found ? Skill "Hydromagnetics" not found ?
In the skills.xml file, electronic sharpshooting is listed as required by Sentry Drone Interfacing, Hydromagnetics is listed as being required by Ice Processing. They don't show up anywhere else in the skills file.
Suggestions: It would be nice if we could directly modify the attribute scores in the application so we could quickly see how much benefit training one of the learning skills or buying a new implant would give.
A checkmark or menu option to display all the skills vs just the trained skills would be very helpful.
If you have a skill at level 1, does the level 4 box display the total time to train up to that level from level 1, or does it display only the time to train up to it from level 3? Proud user of Warp Core Stabilizers |

I'll fire up my linux later and have a look, thanks for the heads up but I fear that there is little I can do about how Java renders the HTML on linux.

I'll have another look on Sisi, I have obviously missed something while going through the skills list.

The programm currently creates the static HTML for display, I'll see what I can do though.

I was thinking of adding a tree view to display the levels of skills and their requirements in a seperate window, a kind of "skill explorer" maybe even with the times for the "required skills" that you don't currently have.

The times displayed a cumulative, if you have level 1, the time displayed in the lvl 4 box is the combined time required for levels 2,3 and 4. The exception to this are the learning skills which should dynamically change as the learning levels progress, but I didn't bother implementing this. ---------

Great tool indeed
A change request maybe: It would be nice that if u calculate how long it would take to train a skill, u would consider all pre-req skills too Like the tool tells me it would take me until 11-jan to go from mining barge 3 to 5. But it does not mention that it will take much longer since I do not have astrogeology 5 yet, I only have 4
Could this funcationlity be added. Or maybe mention both number: How long it would take just for the skill to train, and alos with the dependent skills

Jaabaa,
Another usefull change could be to mention which skills have been started but were never completed, maybe with an extra color.

That isn't a skill dependency but a ship type dependency, you don't have to have astrogeology 5 to train barge to level 5.

This is a very handy tool. It let me see that it would actually be faster to train the willpower and perception learning skills to level 1 and then train frigate up a level, rather than just training frigate directly. Thanks for making it!
It would be great if the tool showed the time it would take to train skills up to level 1 if you don't have the skill already, but meet the prereqs. Would it work to hand edit the xml so that my character has the skills I am interested in at level 0?

** UPDATE ** Added a tree view of all skills with the training times of the skills you already have to get them to the required level.
At the moment it doesn't do the calculations for skills which you don't currently have, I'll do that another day.

I haven't checked your new features, but I did download the program I think two or three days ago and noticed that you had the t2 barge skill listed wrong, instead of Elite Mining Barge it should be Exhumers. Other than that, wonderful tool! I'm going to download the updated version tonight with the skill explorer and give it a whirl!
