Recently we added the talents of a fantasic modeler, his name is Shade. With him as part of our team we are now able to create shots in the movie that were not previously possible.
Early on we really wanted to show off the scale difference between ship classes but to do that we needed to get real close to the battleship hulls and of course when we did the mesh detail and textures just didn't hold up. After all these are game models and weren't built for this sort of presentation. In order for frigs to fly along the hulls of these massive battleships a lot more detail was needed than what we had to work with using the game models. As a result we are creating our own high detail battleship models. Here are the first four models. We decided to show these models off without the textures to give everyone a sense of the mesh detail. Enjoy!
Apoc Apoc Detail
Tempest Tempest Detail
Scorp Scorp Detail
Mega Mega Detail

That's some really badass work. Like the others, I especially like the way the tempest appears. The one in-game looks pretty good, but its always had a slightly "unfinished" edge to it. It's be really sweet if CCP updated the model to match the one you just posted. -Wrayeth

The models are WIP. One of the last things we will do is compare these models with the game models to make sure we stay as true to the game as possible. Of course we reserve the right to use our rather large artistic license. Good catch though

Edited by: Ztone Harvestor on 27/09/2005 06:06:01 They're nice... But you can't just diss CCP for not having models like this ingame. You guys have to remember that eve is running on a 5+ (I think) year old game engine, and that it'd lag like all hell if models with this high of polygon-counts were part of the game.
I can only imagine rendering a movie with such models (and oh, god, once textured!) would take quite a while. I definitely wouldn't want to be doing this for nothing :x - Ztone |

I wish CCP would update these models in game. I don't think high poly models are a performance problem, because some of the newer ships like the Ferox are much higher poly count than older ships, but are in game already without problems.

We'll be releasing a quick little trailer during fanfest this year. We'll then decide if we will release the trailer to the forums after fanfest.

I'd like to make a quick little comment about all the posts in this thread that deal with CCP. First off please don't compare the work in this movie with CCP's work in a game, it's like comparing apples to oranges, and it's useless. CCP IS the reason this movie is being made. Everyone of us working on this movie are subscribers to the game and have been for a long time. This game has given us incredible inspiration and the will to try to pull off such a huge goal.
Second, reproducing model concepts is one thing, coming up with the original design concepts for these ships is much different and far more difficult. I'm not insulting Shades ability because I've seen some of his original model concepts and they are just as good if not better than anything your seeing here in this thread, but I'm sure he would say the same thing in regards to the two skills. We are making this movie because we love what CCP has given us in a game and the community that supports it. Bashing CCP to compliment us hurts and is unwanted.

Edited by: Spartan III on 29/09/2005 13:01:44 Hey I wonder what the CCP official modelers think of this...
*Back at CCP the official modelers hide in closets and under there desks shaking and scared that the day will come when Mr. CCP sees the EVOL teams models...*
Oh well they probably shouldn't lose sleep or eve-time over it.
2 other things... You people shouldn't just be giving all the credit to "him" as they are a whole team and the models wouldn't exist without all of "them"
1 last thing... Hey biff ever thought about having a 1 mill view fee for the two weeks of viewing the episodes when they come out? Thousands of people will want to see the movies and if it was like 1 mill for each episode (as I am guessing you will not release them all at once) then you could split it between your team and make a few bill. And all the noobs that don't have a mill to spare can just wait 2 weeks to view it. _______________________________________________ Member - [CHRST] Christian Fellowship Foundation

If you look into Shades site there's more Eve art including short clips.
You can also see that he currently isn't employed with any graphical jobs, and his website (and this project) would just be to add to his profile.
Shade: Keep up the work man, amazing models and you'll get noticed for projects like this (I hope. Because it's awesome work). _________________________________________________________

Isn't polygon count a consideration as well? Those models have way more detail in game since they'll only be used in a video once, not over and over in real time on low to high end PC video cards. :) If you had that level of detail in game, your frame rate would be expressed in frames per minute instead of frames per second.

"Isn't polygon count a consideration as well?"
Aye; for example, the in-game Scorpion is buit from ~5.5k triangles, only 2k of them actually being the visible model.
For video work this can be increased by thousands, because frames don't need to be calculated real-time...

Very impressive modelling Shade, I especially admire the features added where the game models have less definition, and the alternative designs for the command bridges. If your project needs additional help modelling/texturing/animating I may be able to assist.

Do you maintain the model pieces as sub divisional polygons or collapse them to an editable polygon to detail?

Yeah and for those saying get these models in game if they did the game would be completely unplayable with those kinds of poly counts.

Am guessing "live" meant real-time, solid 60+ fps performance of the game client that's rendering the geometry for the player to see... not being able to move objects around and set keyframes in animation program, for frames that are then rendered in batch.

Looks great...can't wait to see them textured as well.
Am I right in thinking that you guys originally extracted the models from the Eve client as a basis for creating these better detailed models? Is there a way of working out the 'real life' dimensions of the apoc and other ships that didn't appear in the old ship database that used to be on this site?
I'd like to knock up a few size comparisons like this one, but if the ship didn't appear in the old ship db, I have nothing to work with. It occurs to me that if I know that a Tempest is 1020 metres long, then I could work out how big the Apoc is by comparing the models - if there was a way of extracting them and looking at them outside of the game. All quite anal really, but I often think that you lose the sense of scale in Eve, and it's nice to have some comparisons to RL things to get more of an idea. I mean, who would've thought the small frigs were the same sort of size as a Jumbo jet?

This is great stuff! Wasn't sure if it was possible to get anything meaningful from the game models, but clearly you've managed to. Using silhouettes of the ships reminds me of those WW2 aircraft recognition posters.

Excellent models mate.
Just a minor critisium (feel free to ignore it)
Tempest: You may wish to consider reducing the guns by 75% which would allow you to fit all 6 and also would boost the scal of the ship considerably. Question, are the guns Autocannons or Artillary (they look like Auto cannons)
Apoc: Guns again, You may wish to consider swaping the barrels with a "lens" arrangment in the gun domes. A Lazer weapon gives you the flexibility to imply that the actual weapon itself is fittted into the main hull (and therfore could be quite large) and what you see as the weapon mount is a mirror/crystal device to deflect and focus the Beam at is targets. As soon as you show a barrel your implying that all that distructive power is produced from that tiny part of the gun. That was in progress, just took a while to texture them all >.<;; but either way, here it is:
EVE ship size comparison chart, half-size (2048 pixels, for wallpapers and suchlike) EVE ship size comparison chart, full size (4096 pixels, for detail nuts and people with good printers, i guess)
(and i know the cheap bump-mapping trick on dreadnaughts kinda sucks, but at these resolutions leaving them with regular textures really made it obvious these are low polycount game models :/

That is an very useful chart! At the least a very handy tool for 3D modellers. The 1st stumbling block to modelling EVE(ish) ships is generating blueprints to refer to. The in-game camera is difficult to use for this purpose, it's perspective is quite flared; so measuring is tricky.
Currently you've distributed the ships along the X and Y co-ordinates of page (a Side View). Would it be possible to space them along the Z axis also, and then render a Top View, and a Front View? These reference charts would then allow scale to be checked in all 3 dimensions.
Well executed too. The damsel pixel made me laugh at first, then had me thinking how massive these ships are meant to be. Is your day-job anything to do with Information Design? http://www.eve-files.com/media/signatures/The_Brood_Omithar_03.jpg

For the most part we are creating the models and UV sets in Max and then porting them over to Maya. The reason for this is Shade uses Max for modeling and I use Maya to animate and create all the effects. It's simply a matter of two people knowing two different applications.
There are 8 people at the core of this project. I've done my best to try and create a seamless pipeline for a number of applications and even operating systems (yes we are even using a Mac). We have had a few bumps in the road but overall things are working fine and using multiple applications to suit everyone's skill set has not been a problem. It's also been a great learning experience!

I see, well keep up the good work guys, really looking forward to the movie. Learning and having fun is always a good thing! Never used max alot, i'm a maya and lightwave guy and since recently cinema.

Originally by: Lord Takani As a 3d Artist i have to give you credit shade. Those are some nice meshes. :) But why move it over to maya for further detailing? What are you guys gonna render the final with, menthal ray?
For the most part we are creating the models and UV sets in Max and then porting them over to Maya. The reason for this is Shade uses Max for modeling and I use Maya to animate and create all the effects. It's simply a matter of two people knowing two different applications.
There are 8 people at the core of this project. I've done my best to try and create a seamless pipeline for a number of applications and even operating systems (yes we are even using a Mac). We have had a few bumps in the road but overall things are working fine and using multiple applications to suit everyone's skill set has not been a problem. It's also been a great learning experience!

If any topic, this topic deserves a bump...
Great job Shadowlands team. The meshes are excelent, but how's the texturing going? UV mapping is a bit*h and far too often do I see projects stop dead when it comes to this step. I'm happy to see some of the ships have textures on your site though so hope is well and alive from my perspective :)

If you would like to see all the battleships fully textured they can be seen in issue #2 of E-ON magazine.

Very nice work! When i try to make something in 3D myself i end up with very ugly looking / boxlike items, i wish i was even half as good as the creator of those models :)
What software is it made with? 3d smax? Oh and did i say i love those models, want them ingame ;) Anyone know the polycount on the ingame ships? -
