With the coming expansion and the movement of Grav belts to the System scanner and the fancy new graphics for it, is this a push towards the removal of normal belts and the introduction of just grav sites for mining?
Wouldn't be hard to do, remove re-spawn of normal belts after DT and just let them fade out over new eden and bump up the grav site frequency x5 maybe x10

I agree, I think it would be great, add that even small increase in the "enjoyment" (lol) of mining |

99% certain this has been mentioned at Fanfest discussions before, as a desireable change.
Could be that ice fields are not only the "guinea pig" for this idea, but also the first of several changes yet to come.

There are bots, afk miners, those who simply oppose any change, those who believe that it's too much of a hassle and not worth their time, then there will be those thinking that it'll be even more dangerous, those who won't simply be able to warp to a site, because they don't understand it (yes, i'm serious), those who'll complain about belts being gone simply because they are gone ...
... now my brain hurts. |

It kinda makes good sense now really, with the tags for sec system thats coming in and the reduced need for ratting for sec I think dropping all the belts to grav sites would be a great introduction now everything is set up |

Their are but how many do we have in our solar system? Not saying its the same in each one but 1-20 a system? if your going for realism then you point is invalid |

Also, because they're weird small semi-circles with rocks in close proximity, whereas the belt in our system is much more diffuse, and covers the whole system.

Yeah because the fact that asteroids respawn is literally the only aspect of EVE to require a healthy suspension of disbelief in order to maintain the illusion of this perfectly realistic space simulator... |

Extra effort required to mine will also raise the mined ore prices, but not the reprocessed ore prices that will help hold them down from PvErs but this is required in all sec systems, low, high, null and W for any mining as it should be.
This ties in exploration with reward.
Every reward in eve should have to be explored/searched for to reap it. Great side effect, makes automation harder, but not impossible though. In short, they have to think and do that extra work.
Long overdue and very welcomeds
It also makes ganking more challenging and rewarding :)

Perhaps they will, I certainly would like to see it done. I mean who would have thought CCP would let us build stargates and connect them to unknown parts of the universe yet to exist by Dec '13 lol but it looks like it may happen as well. |

Realistic distances between objects, and actual sizes of objects, doesn't play a part in eve. Distances, and sizes, are adjusted ffor the convenience of making eve enjoyable to play. The current rock fields are completely practical, given the limitations of the game.
Static asteroid belts, as they are, are a good thing, because they foster easier empire pvp, provide a static location for rats, and allow people who want something simple and relaxing to do, to have just that. Plus, they're such a core part of the way eve has always been, I think it would be an absolute shame to remove them entirely and replace them with grav belts. |

Realism?
You want a ring completely around the local star holding millions of asteroids?
One the one hand you could certainly mine one field for the rest of your natural life. On the down side, you'd need a really high end computer to run it.
Since I have such a computer, I'll throw my hat into the one belt per system idea.

With the new tags for security status system, does the future absolute removal of belts make sense at all? To me, it looks more like simply placing "special" minerals and resources in anomalies in the future while leaving the typical veldspar fields alone. |

I did watch fanfest, but just had a couple of questions regarding this.
1. Are all current grav sites, ie grav sites in high sec, null sec, low sec, and WH space going to be located via the on board scanner rather than probes now?
2. Does this apply to ladar sites also or only grav sites?
3. If asteroid belts were to be completely removed then what would take the place of ratting and how would that work?
If CCP could let us know, or if this was mentioned already and I missed it or it was mentioned at one of the events not broadcast, then perhaps someone who knows this from the community.
Thanks in advance. Interesting changes on the horizon for sure. |

1. yes, as per the dev blog.
2. only grav, ladar will still need probes.
3. rats still spawn in anoms, so people would fly to anoms, not belts. at least, that's how the sov grav sites in null work, never mined a high sec one, never found one worth the time. |
