But any amount is unfair isn't it its not like a tax that if you pay you get you binman comming around or get an electricity supply, your attacking a target and demanding a fee or they don't die, the way you describe it is like a fair fee for something you might want, and getting your hauler held up low sec by a pirate is never what anybody wants.
TBH I'm getting a little fed up of the 'I'm a pirate, I steal, gank and grief normal players to get my money and thrils. I am the very definition of a egocentric player, therofore the whole population of eve should praise me...'
Ofcourse its fair :) Its a public service. 1. We keep the market running, so you carebares SHOULD praise us, if not worship. 2. Its a very fair tax to pay to stay alive. Lets call it Personal security tax. 3. We are not egocentric, we are Capitalistic.
Cheers :)
The way i see it, if your gonna come into low sec space for the greater rewards you gotta expect to have greater danger, i guess in a way it is tax, because you earn more, every now and again a pirate catches you and makes you pay a ransom.
and hell be fair, you know you love that adrenaline rush anyway.........

A gentleman Pirate is always preferable to one that behaves like an uncultured thug. All the famous pirates throughout history were both sharp of wit and strong of swordplay.

Generally famous pirates were those so brutal and bloodthirsty that they created a legacy of fear that handed their name down through the ages. Perhaps you were thinking of privateers? Drake and the rest could afford to be gentlemen because they had the support and safe harbor of a nation. Sadly the privateer profession doesnt exist in EVE.

Seen Pirates of the Carribean a few too many times? I can think of a couple of pirates that meet that description, Jean Lafitte for one, arguably Henry Morgan but his raids in to Panama and Maricabo were quite brutal. Some privateers practiced military courtesy but privateers operating under a letter of marquis are decidedly different from pirates. Most of your true pirates were basically just uncultured thugs, the high seas equivilant of an armed robber. Some of the more well known ones, Kidd for instance, are more famous for getting caught and hung than any real piracy.

To hell with pirates and their "code."
When a pirate keeps his word it's not because he has honor or integrity, it's so he can build a small reputation for keeping his word so more people will pay him so he can make more money in the end.
There is nothing honorable about a pirate player, they are completely devoid of any "nice" human characteristics (in game atleast.) Even if they try and say that pirating is honorable, or if you nonpirates try and say they're honorable...remember this...they make their money by stealing, lying, and cheating (in the illegitimate sense, not the exploitation of the game sense.)
And that is why i'll never pay a ranson, i'll scuttle my ship before I hand a pirate what he wants. If you let a bully get away with it once, he'll keep coming back. My philosophy is...take the loss once, don't ever let it happen again. (Lose your ship to the pirate, come back and take what you lost in tenfold.)

Exactly. If you don't want to label that as 'honor', you can label it as 'good business sense'.
Quote: they make their money by stealing, lying, and cheating (in the illegitimate sense, not the exploitation of the game sense.)
Are we talking about a pirate ransoming you in a belt, that due to his good business sense will let you go if you pay? If that's the case:
-Stealing? Yup, I agree with you.
-Lying? Nope. If he lets you go after you pay, he is not lying, is he?
-Cheating? Nope. What rule does a pirate break if he ransoms you in a belt? You did press 'yes' when the pop-up said "hey, you sure you wanna go into low-sec?", didn't you?
So, you are wrong 2 out of 3...
But this is they key part:
Quote: If you let a bully get away with it once, he'll keep coming back.
If you think like this, you still haven't understood who your competitor is.
Think it from a business sense. The pirate out there is a risk, not a competitor... your competitor is any other pilot performing the same activity as you.
Say you mine in low-sec; other miners in low sec are your competitors (they sell the same ore as you do, thus lowering the price you can get). A pirate, which for your activity is a risk, is a way in which you can outsmart your competition.
Simple as that.
Each time you refuse to pay ransom and your ship goes pop, the smart miner competing against you on the next belt smiles. Why? Because he will pay the ransom, that will let him: -save money -save time -get ahead of you
Again... not 'honor', we agree on that. Just good, solid business sense.

This theory might work if people played the game 24/7. Most dont.
Say the miner doesnt pay, get the insurance and plays for an extra hour the next day. Problem solved.

I'm not going to argue with Herko, as he made good points, though I don't agree with them. I still see pirates as bullies just out to make the easy buck. (Pirating, when done properly, has got to be rediculously easy. My idea of proper pirating is attacking the weak and helpless, such as miners and freight runners.)
Now, to reinforce what I was saying again, what Herko and I agreed on. Pirates are 100% honorless. Honor is having a 1v1 with another respectable pilot and letting him walk if you savagely beat him, or staying true to your word in a legitimate or willing agreement. Once again, staying true to your word when dealing with a helpless victim is just ensuring a larger number of people who think they'll survive an encounter if they pay up. It's not honor, and it never will be honor.
I'd like to see more pirate hunters honestly....
