i think ccp would disagree
Pfft, not all of of us can afford to waste money on shiney pieces of paper and im certain even less of us would be very happy about being kept in the dark about such a major change to eve just because we dont want to cough up any extra money for this info.
If anyone wants to scan the page(s) related to the Asian cluster/server/market/whatever then ill be more then happy to host them. I dont care about the rest of the mag as thats just fancy non-important stuff. ------------------

I dont see a problem really, asia is a different playerbase on the far side of the world that needs different tastes catered for. It will help CCP put the feelers out on that market by starting with a smaller capacity server which as the article says they can scale upwards.
And lets be honest, I dont think TQ is quite in a state yet where it can accomodate such increases in load as a mass marketing campaign in asia might bring. They also have the option in the future of integrating the two shards by transferring accounnts from the other server for eg.
Though will be interesting to see how CCP/GM's etc cope in asia handling two servers being patched and so on and maintaining them both.

I would not be surprised if you were threatened with your accounts being banned if you decided to, especially since its CCP's own mag. I am sure they will explain further soon enough.

I don't think any of you actually 'get it.'
China is restricting internet playtime by government law, and is banning all freedom of speech that might cast negativity on their government. Any MMO game that does not follows these exact rules and regulations, is BANNED from being released in China.
Let me repeat it again: BANNED from being released in China.
The so-called "Asian market" is pretty much dominated by the chinese. If CCP, or any other international MMO wants a part of that market, they have to create a dedicated server farm for that country.
If you don't like it, and are not from China, then stop whining.

"culture" is not the same as the inheritence of genetic material you start out with. Race has nothing to do with it - a somewhat, ahhhh, more intense gaming environment is undeniable, however, and what does the color of someone's hair have to do with that?
And to call it simply economic would want explaining why this isn't a universal phenomenon. And to say, "well, their economy's different and they react to it differently," comes back to the cultural. And never start a sentence with a conjunction.
edit: duh, and there's that, as pointed out by Chistopher. I forgot about the great firewall of China. There are internet workers who do nothing but prowl the net looking to see who's looking at "inappropriate material" as defined by the government, or heaven help you *spreading* such material. China - which means THE GUMMINT OF, not ALL THE PEOPLE THEREIN, for you oversensitive types :P - has been building a quite successful model of an old communist regime learning to reap the benefits of capitalism whilst maintaining a totalitarian hold.
Point being only that there are a whoooole lotta things that can't be left out when considering this topic.

They wouldnt know who it was, but that is going off track imo.
I dont feel its right that the devs are forcing people to buy a magazine to read about something that is as important as this.
I can understand about the chronicles, storys and inside scoops about the devs love lives and feet fetishes, but not important ****.

If a seperate shard for the asian market was announced in EON I'd be seriously disappointed, not because I didn't get to hear it first.. I have my order confirmation in my inbox, but because holding this sort of announcement back from players who already pay for the game is wrong, also I think this would be a mistake.. sharding EVE would remove one of the features that makes it really unique. Hell, we already have a number of different cultures playing this game (RA springs to mind.) who have carved out there own place and reputation in the game.
Why not just bring them right in the front door, rather than sneaking them through the back entrance like your ashamed of our new players/market?

It makes my entire efort redundant if this is going to happen.
I'd agree with an EVE cluster for the Chinese only - that's perfectly understandable, although a tough break for the Chinese.
If CCP plans to make a completely seperate cluster for all of Asia, i'll probably not be playing a lot longer... As it's been said before, if there's 1 thing why EVE is so good, it's because everyone is on a single server.

What? Thats a silly reason to quit a game.
There are sound geographical reasons for a seperate Asia cluster too, you get quite a lot of latency when you're going from asia to london and back not to mention huge transit costs in data flinging back and forth between the Asia and London servers. So it makes sense (for financial reasons also) to have a seperate cluster in Asia.
However, can someone give me some really good reasons why Eve should not have seperate server clusters?

IMO if by law, a country must have its own dedicated cluster to cater for specific needs then let CCP set up a cluster for this. If us westerners are on a cluster then is it really going to affect us?

Edited by: Sicori Malaki on 30/09/2005 01:50:57 lol@all the people who say they will quit if CCP sets up a seperate shard in Asia
you are addicted to eve, just admit it, you wouldn't quit for nothing except maybe loosing all your skillpoints :P, but even then you'd probably start again in 1-2 months :)
but on the other hand, I'm all for it, if it makes more money for CCP I dont really see why it isn't a good thing, they can hire more devs and maintenance people and stuff so maybe we can have our shard in good state all the time ^^
and I dont see how it will directly affect me personally, it will just mean that some people will be 2 years behind us economically and skillwise in eve and we wont communicate with them (ingame at least) so no harm really. and common, 2 shards vs 20+ in other MMO's =)
edit: and common, think.. all the (important) stuff in EON, will be released on the CCP or Eve-O site eventully, you just get to see it sooner in EON, just like coming to the Fanfest gives you a preview of whats coming in next versions in Eve and what the dev team is thinking and stuff that they will release anyhow on the site some time later. I mean, the Exodus trailer was shown in the last fanfest, and 1 month (or so) later it was released on the site :P and they wont set up a new shard in Asia tomorrow, first they need to program into eve the timing and penalty system that is required by law now for all MMO's released in China so no ******* harm done i getting this info a little later., this will at first happen sometime well into next year. ______________ Only in the Tales that humans tell, do the hunters kill the wolf in the end. |

Well in a Australia we can deal with being so far away from London.... I am sure the rest of the Asia-Pacific rim can as well.
I really really hope they don't split the cluster as I am really looking forward to seeing our whacky asian mates having a go at it. Sure we might get some macrominers and all that, but there is nothing stopping that now. CCP are working through banning accounts and I am sure they will pay closer attention if it got out of hand.
Either way I think RA is a fine example that different culture in this game is a great thing.

Hellmar,
This is ridiculous. I have no intention of paying a very high price for a magazine (sorry, not interested in excuses why the price is high) PLUS high shipping charges for a magazine to learn about basic things relating to Eve. By all means have EON, but as soon as it becomes the "only way to find out things", you're moving away from a subscription model to a subscription + expansion model - the VERY model which you say you don't want.
This is, to me, a pretty much "put up or shut up" issue on that. So, is Eve subscription or subscription + expansion?

Too much latency? I play eve from the large asian city of Seoul South Korea and I usually run 3 accounts and I have no problem with lag. As for a second server I agree that if there is a china only server then great, but to make a second asian server would very much ruin eve honestly.
The single server is what makes this game unique.

Yeah, i read about the original banning of that Mexico sweatshop clan when it happened; i forget what game, but the publisher didn't want to touch that issue with a virtual pole and banned all connected accounts. Then probably wibbled under the table for a while. You should also read this: http://www.walrusmagazine.com/article.pl?sid=04/05/06/1929205&tid=1 about Ed Castronova, if you haven't. Yes. If you say the primary cause of gaining money is the money, well yes, i agree with you. If you want to dismiss the cultural environment as not a factor in how it took off, i'm going to have to myself, however.

this is bad in soooo many ways, yes, the playing style may differ but the slogan of eve has always (seemed) to have been 'adapt or die'.
I'm sure that we could all learn a lot from each other and making a second cluster is gonna make things quite bumpy imho for a while, unless new peeps cash goes on hiring more staff.
I can get the whole idea for the chinese seperate cluster, but then again all you need is a simple timer on the client (how hard could it be?) which times out in 3 hours.
Yes, I am apprehensive about the massive influx of new players, the effect it will have on the economy, my fave systems not being quite as quiet as they used to be, other people getting in on where I live, but hey the more the merrier.
Also I thought it would work in ccp's 'get everyone to 0.0' as resources will become so thin in empire people will have no choice but to scout low sec for resources. From this the pirates are happy as they get to shoot new people, more structures are erected in 0.0 and before you can say antidissastablishmentarianism things are working out just peachy (besides the panic and spammage on the forums, but we're all kinda used to that )
I say NO to seperate servers and yay! to a big happy global community...or a comfortably malcontent one anyway
Not too pleased about the info only being available in eon only atm too as this is a pretty bloody important desission (need sleep) which the whole community should have knowledge of. Ahh well, we'll prolly be informed a month after eon is out in the world.

I don't think there are any to give. A seperate cluster seems to be a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Ignoring the logistical problems of trying to handle thousands of new players on a cluster that is already overloaded and geographically remote from those players, the skills and resources gap between new and old players is a very strong argument for a second cluster.
Any corporations or alliances formed by the new players would be competing against entrenched, experienced and well-resourced opponents. My guess is they'd spend a year getting beaten into the ground before being able to compete. I don't think either us or the new Asian players would be very happy in that situation.

Not really, eve was designed as a single shard, quite possiblly because CCP saw they could fit everyone onto one shard and save money in the beginning whilst being able to moderatly increase its capacity inline with no of subscribers. I guess it was very much a guessing game on how big Eve might get. I really dont think a single shard was intentional as a feature of the game world, moreso that economics and technology at startup benefited a single shard. However it has grown up to embrace the single shard feature and indeed is one of eve's best features.
I guess CCP are looking ahead to just what TQ's capacity is and their ability to add such features as ones pencilled for kali like plantery flight onto a server that struggles at the best of times currently. In the same sense leaving China's internet gaming policies aside, I imagine they are being speculative on how many subscribers they can draw from the ever strong asian market and realising that a locally based customer support and server would benefit more in the competitive asian market never mind being able to give TQ some breathing room whilst it is upgraded in preparation for kali.
But to directly answer your point, I hope CCP never shard the TQ we have currently or make for eg seperate servers in the US & Europe like most common MMORPG's, as most know, that would destroy the eve we know, even if sometimes a db wipe and restart does cross my mind as beneficial, I know it wont happen.
Regardless, the MMORPG industry is fast paced and CCP are very well positioned to make Eve 2 whenever they decide to,knowing what they know now and with previous experience they will most likely secure greater financial backing and be able to deliver a very formidable package but thats for us to worry about in say 2008.

people. I am from China myself (Hong Kong, to be precise) and I have been playing EVE for 6 months. They have tried to recruite me for doing demos & things to the folks in China, but I just dont have the time for it. CCP have already created the China EVE website, as you can see on the right hand side of the main page. With the growing amonut of people playing MMOs, this is going to be a big market for CCP.
Just one more comment for the "Asia Cluster". Many Chinese do not read or type English that well (can type Chinese really quickly), so maybe this server will be in another language to cater for mainland Chinese folks. As Christopher pointed out, all internet interactions are 'monitored' and your game will be banned should they(gov)find anything out of whack!!
Just my 2-isks for you.
