I kind of agree that younger people may not have the patience for eve but im sure there are a lot of young people who do. Im 21 and when i first started playing a couple of weeks ago I was thinking I wouldnt have the patience to wait for skills to train so I could fly cooler ships, but after a few days I got used to it and now I really enjoy the nice steady progression that eve offers compared to many other games I played where you rapidly progress through the content then get bored because there is nothing to do. Eve is the epitome of "slow and steady wins the race" for me. |

You can meet a lot of people in Eve and have no idea who they are like physically. They could be very fat, or very skinny, or old or young, or deaf, or rich or poor. They could speak with a lisp or have a cleft pallet or perhaps be physically hideous but have a wonderful voice.

I'm 56 years old, so you're not that old to be playing Eve. 
My goals is escapism from real life for a few hours, and playing a slow paced game I can play at my own speed. |

Not quite. I was 17 when I started, and am 20 now. Several of my friends the same age play. So patience is working fine! 
As to the OP - I personally feel EVE has helped me develop, particularly communication skills. Nothing makes a man talk and think on his fleet like leading a 40 man fleet for the first time...

We have one of the most immature forum communities around. And in game chat there is a lot of spam and immaturity.
However, when you meet people in game and actually hang out with them and get on comms, you will find it to be one of the best communities you will ever find online. I have more friends in more countries from Eve then all other games combined. I have taken 3 breaks from the game in 4 years and have real life friends that I met here that lasted through that.
A lot of those friends are "college age kids", being on their server reminds me of playing guild wars 1. A lot of them are older than me, I am also turning 40 soon.
What theres not a lot of in Eve IMHO, is very young teens/kids. And of course women. But there are a few.

When I started playing Eve over 10 years ago I was already 36 and successful in R/L - good business, stable family etc. During my time in gaming on which I have always spent too much time, I have met some super talented young people. They are brilliant organizers, astute in-game business people and masterful tacticians. With the exception of one (who has been spectacularly successful) I have seen many of those fail badly in R/L ending up in dead end jobs, or no jobs with broken marriages.
My honest advice (as a gaming addict) is give it up. Give up Eve, give up gaming, burn your consoles (or sell them on Ebay if you can do that without getting hooked) and concentrate on matters less virtual.
Gaming is Bad.

I beg to differ, EVE players interact with each other just about daily and learn much from a bit of common sense to when to be cautious. It helps us learn social skills and in a way develop friends. All of these things can be done in RL as well, so I submit to you that EVE is real. |

What really got me into Eve was losing my hearing a couple of years ago. Eve has been a great social outlet. It's still easier to communicate in here than IRL though I have to stick to small fleets with people I know due to voice comms being an issue.
Also on the social side, Eve requires good social skills and cooperation because, as in RL, nothing worthwhile can be accomplished solo (though granted, I'm better at this part in Eve than IRL these days). There is a lot of giving and earning trust. That can always backfire in instances but in the big picture, it is far more profitable to put yourself out there and make new contacts than it is to never trust anyone. Having said that, I never trust anyone with enough of my assets to ruin me if they turn out to be untrustworthy. Eve is a good lesson in trusting others without being an idiot about it, and that is one of life's most valuable lessons. This is probably one of the reasons I still resist the idea of marriage...lol.
Finally, being a girl (24 years old if you care to know) in a game that is 97% male is also eye opening. In answer to the Op's subject, I'm proof that Eve is NOT a young man's game! If they'd ever actually get walking in stations working, I know quite a few more women who will actually give Eve a shot. Until there is more connection to our avatars in this game, it will continue to be an exceedingly male dominated. |

47 here... I can certainly see how some would consider it (as a "game") to be a younger person's thing, but I like it because it tends to force me to think in new ways after days of pressing the pause button on secretary's printers when they're too lazy to look at the flashing error.

I'm not sure age is really a defining demographic in EvE. I am 46 now, but I would have loved the game at 20 too. I think Eve appeals to certain personality types, regardless of stuff like age and sex. |
