Ok, I am new to EVE and starting out as a pirate. I just made my first sucsesful kill, a Megathron Battleship with my Thorax. Although he was mining his cruise missiles and heavy drones made it a pretty close fight.
My problem was I was SHAKING LIKE MAD throughout the whole thing. From the second I scrambled him my heart started racing. I tried to ransom him but I PSYSICALLY almost couldn't open a convo with my victim.
This is the fourth or fifth time i've attacked someone and its happened everytime now - even resulting in the other person getting away because in my frantic behaviour I accidentally forgot to switch my MWD off, or put a repairer on.
Is it this bad for anyone else? I must be the worst PvP'er out there.. I sure hope it goes away over time.

Eventually with experience you control the rush, giving you an edge ... but everyone gets it bad at the start.
It is the true drug of Eve, and those who haven't experienced it just won't understand.

Welcome to EVE. Please check all previous misconceptions on PVP thrill at the door, and get ready for one hell of a ride!
Yeah it simmers down a little with time. But the thrill is in some form always there. Afterall, someone will walk away having lost something in a fight. Unless they run away hehe. That makes for a good adrenaline rush.

I have been... uh... PVPing for a while, and never really got it bad, except for a few nights ago, when I finally decided to give the Moa a try in level 3 missions, I fly into a low sec sector and get attacked (my mission was close to a belt).
I couldn't care less about the ship, it wasn't the first time I was attacked, but this time I actually got scared that the adrenaline rush will be too much my body can handle.
I'd love to get that again though ;)

Edited by: Jezala on 04/10/2005 17:06:49 hehehe...8 months later and it still happens to me occassionally. Avon is right though, you slowly get numb to the exictement and learn to control the rush while maintaining an air of coolness.
Last time it happened to me was like 2 weeks ago. Corpmate and I ended up countering an ambush. The whole fight lasted a good 6 mins, at the end of which both of us were shaking so bad that we had a hard time talking straight b/c the shaking was causing our teeth to chatter. As soon as we got to a safe area, he went to take a smoke (or two) while I made some tea and got some sunshine.
Sometimes when you get an adrenaline crash after the fight the best thing is to get up, fix yourself some tea (substitute with fav drink), get some fresh air, and relax for a few minutes while you regain your composure. Word of warning though, do not handle sharp objects, complicated machinery, or fire when coming down from the adrenaline rush.

Wow incredible i got same thing.
I tought i was the only one its so physical i couldnt beleive it , im shaking too.
And it has nothing to do with shjip loss, its even when i know i got cash for easy replacement. Its wierd , i dont understand it.
The weirdest thing is altough i got nearly rid of it long time ago when i had time to pvp nearly every day, now wehn i have pauses of 2+ weeks , i get it after each pause.Very weird.
Btw now i get killed pretty oftne , but long time ago , when i was pvping nearly every day, i was pretty good pvp , i had even my 5 minute of local fame , so it doesnt mean you cant be a great fighter:)

I dont respond well to stress, the rush is why my pvp adventure was short.
Half an hour of meditation after every fight in order to stop shaking enough to drink a cup of tea is not my idea of time well spent. :/
Luckily for me in EVE you can have plenty of fun and never do any pvp - no matter what the 0.0 crowd say :) ------------- Fight against the filo-communist t2 monopolies! Down with CCCP's one-week plan! Viva la revoluci¾n! o/

Yep, been there, had it so bad I couldn't even talk, couldn't target because I was shaking so bad... and that was before I led fleets. It happened allll over again when i started trying to command.
Over it now, thank god for stella artois.

I think that's pretty normal. Eve is unusual in that losing a ship hurts. Even though it's a game I think most people have an instinct for the risk they are taking and suffer an appropriate physical reaction.
Eventually I imagine it fades but tbh as a bit of an oldy (approaching 40) I don't look for adrenaline rushes in games. I want relaxation. For that reason I stick to industrial tasks in the main.
The really good thing about Eve is that it caters for both extremes. You don't have to engage in risky PvP if you don't want to. -- (Battle hardened miner)

I do that a lot, thnx ^^
Its wierd because i can do fairly dangerous sports - scuba diving, paragliding, rock climbing, fresh snow snowboarding (can be quite tricky in the alps, between the rocks and the avalanches...) and the excitement doesent incapacitate me...
EVE pvp is an extreme sport maybe? ;p

Lol.. the sad part is, it actually gets worse if it someone you realy despise. Fighting in a good ole venom filled, smacktalking hatewar is so exciting its stupid. Makes the win feel so much better and the loss hurt so much more when you actually dont like the person your fighting.
The bad part is it becomes so consuming that you forget that you were playing the game for fun. So thats why its best to not let personal feelings get involved during pvp. Over time the adreneline level will fall but never fails completely.

My first experience with pvp was me fumbling about at the keyboard, turning my ship aaround and thinking "What the hell do I do?", then trying to right click and warp with my hands shaking. my second went a little smoother. You learn from each encounter and it gets a little less overwhelming.

I'm not a hard-core PvPer by any stretch of the imagination, but living mostly in low-sec space means that I meet people who are. My first experience of an unexpected attack while ratting in a 'roid belt was exactly as you described. It's certainly, er, envigorating.

It's a wicked rush, shacking, dry mouth, sweetie hands, the works. It's freaking awesome, here here for there being a point to fighting.
It'll get less bad with time, but for me atleast it remains the best PvP experience ever, only thing that comes close is having a massive killing spree in a fps desperatily fighting against the odds and then it's weak and over fast. And be glad adrenaline gives a serious edge. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I used to feel sick after a fight. It does go away though I find. It all depends on who you're fighting, where, and how much you have to lose. ------------------------------

Edited by: turnschuh on 04/10/2005 17:54:01 Edited by: turnschuh on 04/10/2005 17:53:23 its especially bad when you are in 1.0 and at war with someone.
you jump happy to a warpgate in order to move some named and T2 items and see the red blinking in the overview.
of course you get warb scrambled right away
but the real bad thing is when you get jammed and cant even fire one single shot.
beside that you could easily own both attackers when not jammed...

That's the PvP drug effect Seriously, it happens to pretty much everyone doing PvP, especially early on. It does get less over time but never really vanishes - at least for me. And I love it.

I used to get uncontrollable shakes/nerves before and during PvP but it soon fades.
I still get nervous, and have made 1 or 2 critical mistakes because of it, but it's nothing too bad.

Like others said this is probably the most fun you will get, and yes it still happens after playing eve from day oneą as people stop playing and return to the game etcą and when things change and your not certain how things will turn outą its quite a thrillą
I still remember the times I escaped either from npc or pc with few % in hullą thatĘs a real rushą had a few times in almost all ship classes running with just a hair of hullą talk about a rush :) when you escape with 1%-5% hull now that is something heh
BTW this is about the only game that I know that I get such a rush fromą because its not like other games :P as far as risk/rewards and loss/win etcą

I have left EVE several times due to RL or trying a new game. I always come back to EVE largely due to the intesity of PvP that doesnt exist in other games. I don't get as exited as I did in the early days, but seeing a screen of flashing red is always a rush. -----

Like any RL competitive venture practice, practice, practice means you lose that rush and gain an edge. Shame it has to be that way but that's the price of winning
Oh and if you don't compete often enough the rush returns and you lose your edge, not that I'm encouraging anyone ot take a break

You actually get like that playing a PC game???
I've been playing since beta, been on both ends of the PvP stick, Never have I experienced anything like that...
I mean you do get that adreanline rush like you're in a RL fight and you're gonna kick someone's ass, but it's about 10 notches below that due to the fact that it's a game, and you can't actually see the other person...
I guess if you get that worked up, maybe PvP is not the thing for you... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

Sounds like this game is a health risk waiting to happen.
Getting excited is all fine and dandy, but the shakes? Not really. There's no point to taking yourself so bloody seriously that it hurts :-)

I'm just going to echo what the others have said here -
I used to get it - I used to physically shake in my first dozen or so PvP encounters.
Now though, my heart starts racing a little, I start breathing a bit faster - but I don't really shake.
I find it gets more intense the longer a fight's been brewing - like if you've been stalking someone for a long time, for instance, and finally get him scrambled - or if it's someone you've fought before and want to get even.
Oh, and to MadGaz - It's not abnormal at all. In EvE, you actually have something to lose, your ship actually means something to you, even if you're a filthy rich bastard and it's only time spent flying home and refitting a new one. And I don't think it's unhealthy at all. Though of course, it's nowhere near as big a rush as when you are physically fighting someone, even if it's only a game or sport. (paintball, for instance.).
Respect the Domi. Or else. |
