Hey all. I'm a long time resident of lowsec. I've been making the vast majority of my isk doing exploration out there for over two years. That money goes towards ships I throw away doing solo PvP. Lately, I'm noticing a trend in lowsec.
Gate camps are getting a lot more common. I've started seeing them *everywhere*. Gate camps were always a thing and lowsec was no exception, but whereas my previous route I might run into one camp, I'm seeing two or even three guaranteed camps in the span of a 9 system run. Often these are from unaffiliated corps.
Fascinated and mildly annoyed by this, I started researching many of these corps. A lot of them sit in one area camping, and don't do much else. I'm always flying covert and I *never* see these guys ratting or doing missions. And they can't be doing much exploration cause my profit margins haven't changed much. But their killboards don't show any solo PvP or small gang stuff. Just blobs and camps.
But the worst thing about it is how *bad* they are at it. Like, I understand camps are easy to slip through; I make my living doing it. But when I can throw a couple million loot into a destroyer and run 3 camps without a cloak, when 2 of them have stilettos...
Wtf is going on here? Where are these people coming from? How in the world is this profitable or fun for them? When I'm out getting some decent solo fights these guys are just manning these camps 24/7 and not even catching a fraction of their targets.
I mean are they actually making enough isk to get by just scooping from the idiots they kill? I understand their costs are low since they avoid any actual fights. Still, lowsec seems a lot more active these days. I'm seeing activity far away from the fw front. But really, how is this even fun and why are these guys everywhere now? Its as though these guys are somehow made up of the worst of care bear miners and "leet pvpers". |

It's not really about profit most of the time. I was a pirate (thankfully not for long) when piracy didn't entail caps on standby and most of our kills were Chinese macro haulers. You shoot what you can get and don't think about it all that much. I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

Granted it's been a long time since I've done any gatecamping in lowsec, but I was under the impression that Interceptors + Gate Guns is STILL a bad combo. Possibly why it's so easy to slip past them?

True. But remote sensor boosted nado camps have no problems instalocking. Yet still so many of these camps can't catch ****. Its not like I'm flying ships that are hard to catch. I fly **** with like 3-4 second align time and never get scrammed. I mean when I'm pveing I run something covert but I'm running these gates in armor tanked wolves and enyos without getting slammed. Often. Its not like I'm complaining that they can't catch me, but the fact that people this stupid exists kind of offends me. Its why I suicide gank and bump ice miners. But these guys are honestly below ice miners in my eyes. |

Stiletto + gate guns doesn't work well.
I rarely bump into non-FW gate camps apart from the usual entry systems. Are the blobs FW or pirate? If they are FW they might be specifically targeting enemy factions. Hooray, I'm l33t! -á(Kil2: "The higher their ship losses...the better they're going to be.") |

I was living in lowsec behind the Eve Gate for a long time and I noticed the same thing; lots more players, some doing lowsec indi others camping.
It started to get crowded after Delve blew up last summer. I always just assumed that all the new faces were refugees. Although people that I talked to there claimed this wasn't the case. And I did indeed see some strange gate camps, they were setup more like null camps, but the pilots were not that good; no idea how to decloak someone and low DPS. They did manage to catch a procurer that I brought in to test the tank out.
Maybe they are alts of miners or other highsec residents. -áKick ass soundtrack and Eve Pewpew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvc4KljpRGI |

Not to stroke my epeen. they should be killing me but they're not. And they are pirates cause they're in fringe regions far from fw. And I know they're camps because I'll see them 3-5 hours later on my return trip. They havent budged.
Let me put it this way: when I see stupid players, I want to destroy them. I target miners for this reason, but miners are not armed. Its time to do something a bit more challenging. I regard these players as an enemy to eve due to their stupidity, but if I want to strike back at them I need to understand them. They never pve. They never roam. Or if they do its all of about 5 jumps with 40 people. I'm just honestly confused about what kind of player chooses this play style. As a largely solo player my attack options are highly limited here. I have infiltration alts, and a good deal of experience using guerilla warfare in high sec wars and in wspace, but these camps I see more and more often might as well be bots for all their activity. |

Or maybe, all the "Highsec guys, please explore lowsec" statements made them to Gatecamp in Lowsec. Nearly everyone wanted that, during CSM voting at least. |

Well you're in an NPC corp so that's a good start. You could probably put some rat resistances info in your bio and maybe fly a Gnosis. I think that would be enough to encourage them to shoot you. Oh god. |

Disruptors don't block the microjump drive. If you can delay a scram for 10 seconds you can slip camps super easily with it. I actually need to try cloak + micro jump one of these days, as battleships are the only class of ship that can run into issues with cloak +MWD due to long align times on armor battleships. In theory the addition of the micro jump drive gave battleships a reliable way to slip gate camps. Lord knows every other class of ship has a way already. Which brings me back to my confusion. Cloak MWD is like 99.9% effective on any battle cruiser or smaller, so how do these camps still exist. |

Cause announcing your plans to **** with somebody on the forums on your main is a great idea. Next time I'm planning an infiltration I'll go ahead and post on the forums who my targets are. |

Warp disruptors are a bit more common at gate camps; but there are guys that fit a scram, MWD Brutix being a notable example. A target breaker and heavy neuts will take care of most tackle and allow you to escape with the MJD. However that's a lot of button pushing in a stressful situation with only little time.
I'm pretty certain that you cannot cloak while the MJD is spinning up. I experimented a bit with the idea of using the MJD to run camps and ultimately went back to the 100mn MWD/cloak with a couple of inertia stabs. I do fit the target breaker, you can get it to go off before the cloak disables it. This creates a bright flash that may cause the campers to pause if they haven't seen one, more likely however is that it makes their decloaking attempts more accurate =-P

Welllll the other day I did the guristas arc and fitted a cloak to get out of null gatecamps, then got all the way back one jump from high sec and had my dramiel blown up because I forgot I fitted a cloak since I use them so little lol. It's only after I got the mail I realised I had it duuuh. So they just need someone like me to derp every so often to get kills I guess. I already installed the gila BPc before going back thank god, but lost my t shirts. |

Its not profitable for them most of the time, but its easy to camp rather than to find people in belts.
Yeah its hardly impressive pvp but it gets them out of high sec and that cant be a bad thing.
Also a lot more crappy gate and station camps for old timers to crush!!
