This is a copy of the petition Argent Corp has sent to the Gallente Federation Senate. We ask that, if you want to sign it as pod pilots, you please feel free to sign it here. We have included a reference to this posting along with the several million signatures we have collected planetside and in stations over the last few months, so your names will be included if you do so.
Please, let us not squabble about independance or sovereignty here. This petition is an attempt to show the Senate that the people of the Placid region need and want better security than we have been granted. It is no more and no less than that.
Thank you. Elthia CEO, Argent Corp
_______________________________________________
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate;
The enclosed petition is being sent to you in the hopes that public opinion will sway you to action. The Placid region has great potential for trade, industry, and yes, even research. The people living there are as intelligent, as capable, as anywhere else in the Federation. They are Federation Citizens, entitled to the same freedoms, the same protections, as any other Federation Citizen.
Yet the people of the Placid region are suffering. CONCORD does not patrol the systems there as often or as thoroughly as they should. The Federation Navy does not protect the citizens there. Pirates infest the region, lay waste to transport ships, and threaten anyone who stands in their way. Crime runs rampant.
This must stop! We cannot sit idly by while our children are approached by drug dealers and worse in the streets. We will not sit idly by and watch our schools be infested by pirate recruitment, our parks by drug dealers, and our tradeways by murderers.
It would not take much to increase the security rating of the systems in Placid. It would not lower the security of most systems to lose one patrol, and if you pulled one patrol away from each of the already-well-patrolled systems, you would have a large number for the small set of badly-patrolled systems in Placid.
In addition, Argent Corp has begun the process of assisting in outfitting those who would fight crime in the Placid region. There are many corporations out there who would gladly give a discount to the government, in the interest of assisting in such an endeavor. The profits to be found in Placid far outweigh the losses in such an instance. Money and ships are easily found, even if you cannot allocate the funding necessary for full acquisition.
We are not unreasonable people. We simply wish our homes to be safe from terror. The right to safety and the freedom to pursue happiness are both, according to the Federation Constitution, inherent to every citizen in the Federation. Allow us that right. Protect our homes, and let our taxes do their work!
(enclosed packet contains signatures of approximately 10 million citizens and one link to a post on Galnet)

The duty of any government is to ensure the prosperity of those it rules. I find these requests acceptable. Let us hope the Senate does also. |

I support this. Redeploying navy units or outsourcing some security to podpilot corporations is not without cost but the benefits to the regional economy outweigh this short term cost.
In depth economic reports commissioned by the InterTrade corporation show that the costs of lowered risk to trade in key locations such as Intaki, and links to high-sec areas, break even in costs within a month. This analysis does not consider the flow-on effects to the economy of the increased trade which can be expected to add substantially to the economic growth.
Traders already cover the costs of mercenary protection or in-house convoy protection and still make substantial profits. However this protection can not compare to the full time protection possible with the involvement of the Federation Navy or Concord. Such full time protection allows the numerous smaller corporations and independant podpilots to carry much greater quantities of goods between regional markets. The increased trade revenue clearly outweighs the costs in the medium and long term.
The Gallente Federation depends on its economic power for survival and this is not the time to let the economy falter.

Edited by: Dhaer Gellon on 26/10/2005 08:50:44 One would have thought the plight of the Intaki in Placid would form part of the election manifesto of the various candidates. I think it's quite telling in itself that not much if anything has been said about it at that level.
They're alienating a heck of a lot of concerned voters, but I suppose to look at the situation cynically, they must concentrate their efforts on matters relating to places where the vast majority of the voters are - The Gallente core systems.
If the average Gallente in Luminaire was concerned about Intaki welfare, we'd see it feature much more strongly as an election point in the campaign. This leads me to believe that it's not necessarily those in power that do not care about the Intaki - It's the Gallente voter.
I support this petition, because it is not a demand for independance. It's a request for equal rights for Intaki within the Federation.

Edited by: Beech Ormerod on 26/10/2005 09:20:18 I understand your position with this petition perfectly, and I hope that the Federation will listen rather then ignore because the alternative is not so pretty as seen in the Caldari-Gallente war.
My personal theory on this is that the Intaki people are looking for an identity and I understand that you may not have found that within the Federation. They have neglected your homeland of Placid... I cannot preach about your feelings but I can empathise to the best of my ability, and I wish you the best of luck with this endeavour.
I sign this petition as a Caldari national.
Regards,
Beech Ormerod

This is a very well thought out petition. While it doesn't go as far as I know some people would have possibly hoped for, it should be enough to appease them. If the Federation wants the Intaki people to know that they care for their role within their nation, they should offer equal protection and equal rights. Currently they make them out to look like second-class citizens unless they assimilate themselves into Gallente culture. They neglect their homeland and essentially let it become a ghetto.
Taking action on this issue is a must for the Federation. It will boost their economy and help stabilize tensions between the two bloodlines. People can only be ignored or manipulated for such a long time before things become grim.
I sign this petition in the name of free trade, security, and as someone who believes the past should be learnt from.

Signed.
This is the appropriate approach to the problems that exist in Placid in the current time. Although i disagree with the comments on Gallente voters. Intaki citizens are voters too - if intaki citizens made their voice heard by voting in high percentages, our presidential candidates would soon take note and reflect this need in their manifestos.

Enthusiastically signed.
As a much more moderate member of the Intaki nationalist movement, I would not be quick to dismiss an honest attempt by the Federation to better protect the Intaki people. For every great journey there must be a first step. If salvaging the Intaki-Gallente relationship without independence is still possible, I would call this that step.

While I support this petition whole heartedly and wish to sign my support, I feel it is also important to inform the Gallente officials that should they choose to ignore the plight of the citizens of Placid, there are organizations prepared to take matters into their owns hands. A peaceful solution is always the hope of people, but when peaceful resolutions cannot be reached, drastic actions must be taken.
I am not suggesting that war would break out, but I will not deny the possibility of a potential cessation of the Intaki people from the Federation. Again, a peaceful resolution is everyoneÆs hope, but those of us who understand the fallacy of democracy are preparing for the worst.

I have made such pleas in the past and I add my voice to this call as well. The culture of neglect in Placid must not continue. It is time that the Federation acted for the betterment of all regions under its jurisdiction.
Messrs Foiritan, Autrech and Blaque, it is time for you to come forth and make your views known. I call on both you and your representatives to make a stand on the security concerns in the Placid region.

My corp is based in the Placid region, and I remmeber many attacks on our mininig operations and general piracy, so I gladly add my name to this pettition. Only 2 weeks ago my Iteron was attacked by a pirate, he just sat there and tanked the fire from the sentry guns, very little security is there from what I can see.

It would seem to me that the cost of such a change would be too great to really pay off.
Not only would it require a constantly vigilant fleet of CONCORD ships in every newly classified system (one patrol will not suffice, I believe), but because of podpilot owned starbase laws it could actually destroy a lot of important industry.
Starbase owners would have to uproot their moon mining operations and move even farther into lawless space.
No, I think it should be up to the podpilots of the region to maintain law and keep the pirates down. ------------------------------------------- Sometimes, I wake up but keep on dreaming. |
