I was bored at work, so I made some calculations about those new shiny toys we're going to have, and I ended up with some sick results:
For exemple: the Gallente sentry drone: Base damage: 50 Rof= 2 seconds With Damage multiplier: 50*1.6= 80 With Drone interfacing V: 80*2= 160 With Heavy Drone Operation V: 160*1.25= 200 (not sure it will apply) With Sentry Drone operation V (probably 5% damage/lvl): 200.1.25= 250 damage With Gallente drone specialisation lv IV: 250*1.08= 270 Damage On a Dominix with 5 sentry drones deployed and gallente BS lv V: 270*1.5*5= 2025, So 1000+ DPS
Itwill probably a lot less when it goes live, but it's still scary. The Idea of a fully tanked Dominix with plenty of nos, and 3 batchs of sentry drones like that is sick.

Sniping. Which, of course, you can do after my Dom-o-Doom has webbed and scrambled you. Because I won't release my drones until I do. At which point you will be smeared with seven kinds of ****. ___

Or as someone said in another thread. Fleet battle, defending side dropps 30-40 or so of these at the gate and move 40km away. HUGE amount of extra firepower. No one is going to dare jump another fleet after this.

hopefully they will make the sentry drones take a few min to anchor at least.
or else it will be gretly unbalanced.

According to the dev blog they'll be like regular drones, just not moving. So they won't simply pwn anything that moves; you'll still have to target a ship and tell them to shoot it. Unless of course that ship shoots at you.
So, you'll be limited my lock times and aggression as usual. Though dropping a bunch of medium bubbles to prevent an immediate warp off, fitting sensor boosters to drop lock time, and *then* anchoring 15-20 sentry drones would be pretty nasty.

Gotta quote myself
- Some "good guys" gather a fleet of 15 bs and go to kick "bad guys".
- Bad guys get 10 bs, move to a gate, deploy gallente "best damage 20 km optimal, good tracking sentry drones"
- Then they get back to 70km long range, still good damage range
- Good guys jump in with 15 bs.
- HUGE LAG
- Sentry drones OMFG PWN everyone
- Jumped fleet cant use their sentry drones beacuse they are out of range (in fact they wont be able to use any drones due to range). Defenders get both huge lag advantge and extra fire power enemy can't possbly use
So what is you have to lock some1 for sentry drones to fire. You put them at the gate, you move out, you have boosters setup. Enemy jumps in, you do same thing as with guns, FC calls prim, all lock one poor guy, 50 sentry drones fire a volley point blank.
With this "new amazing feature sentry drones" all defenders get double of firepower for nothing.
You order your fleet to jump and engage enemy defending fleet? I aint no jumping if you ask me.

And devs think people will have LESS drones after this nerf? As you say, everyone will drop sentry drones in a gate camp, just move to gate, drop them and then move a bit out for better distance.
Anyone jumping in will be screwed even more.

I would guess that you'll be limited by the normal drone control range, so they will go inactive when outside it. Although I doubt thats much of a comfort, since it will just force campers to use shorter range ammo.

Wouldn't you be able to, with the new level of certainty of a good deal of sentry drones used in a camp, as you proclaim, counter by:
- now traveling with a passive tanked battleship with extra SB's? OR - give sentry drones a negativ bonus to drone control range.
While it's true, as already mentioned, that campers would be "forced" to move closer, wouldn't that cure the problem of them being as safe and untouchable as they are now, while also making a blaster/torp ship usefull for travel escorts. ________________________________________ <insert clever/witty comment here>

Maybe one of these new ships or current ones could get a bonus to EW but instead of it being a targetted device that they use its an area effect.
When they decloak and activate the devices all the drones get their one or two shots and kill one or two BSs but thats all they do before they get jammed by this area effect device.
Longer rng then a smart bomb, effects drones or very small ships only. Used on a specialty ship for bonus to range and effect. Or on other ships with a cap penalty simliar to the cov ops cloaking device.
Maybe the devs are planning something like that or maybe they need to read this post and implement it.
OR
They have fleet module effect devices... a ship that creates a jump field like a gate for the fleet :o
It will take fuel to use and it will take soo much fuel that a transport will have to carry it. It fuels up locks on to a cyo- field and jumps!
Range could be limited by the amount of ships and ship types within the fleet (present at where the jump ship is located)
So jump in with tankes and this special EW ship and jam the drones with area effect device, take minimal casualties AND/OR have a specialty ship capable of creating a jump field that acts like a gate for a short period for a fleet to jump through and engage the camped enemy at leisure.
Those are two solutions that they could develop a counter for to these drones being planted.

Imo, sentry drones shouldn't deal anymore dmg than heavies, but they deal it at greater ranges but with far worse tracking, and they take time to deploy and are easily destroyed.

They did mention that these drones were going to have awful tracking. You have to factor tracking into DPS, which is pretty difficult.
Also, I'm pretty certain that heavy drone op wont apply, since sentry drones are fairly clearly in a different class.
There maybe some balance issue there, but not as bad as it looks, I wouldnt think.
Plus an anchored and hence stationary drone would die very fast, I'd think.

Current stated stats give the gallante sentries tracking similar to medium guns. 0.03 to compared with for example 200mm rail which have 0.035 with max skills and 250mm rail that have 0.02875 with max skill.
Currently heavy drone op increase damage for light, medium and heavy drones so if nothing changes I say it will effect all drones including sentries. But even if it doesn't you still get over 1500dps.

Well...if you warp in at a gate without some info you might run into just about anything. For all you know there could be 15 HAC's there and your 20 battleships wouldn't even hit a single one of them before they started to drop...
Covert ops is the key to success. In this case it could drop you 40 km's on the far side of the enemy and make sure that their drones will be faaaar out of range and they can't deploy any new drones of their own since they probably have to fly the 40km's to their senties to scoop them before deploying any new drones...
Intelligence is the key in any fleetaction. Or you are just running around blind in a blacked out room kicking left and right...

With scout drone operation lvl 5 thats 45km. Unless ofcourse you are using an ishtar. If the enemy fleet has half a brain they will send in covert ops to scout so they will know whats on the otherside. Also they will have very poor tracking so send in a few frigs to run arround and blow them up. Maybe a few HACS to attck the battleships and avoid the sentries tracking. If the side that deploys the drones warp out thats alot of lost drones.

Yes. That's just it.The tactical inflexibility of these things will make sure they aren't used at all if they don't do some serious damage. Just look at the sentrydrones in missions. You chose the range, transversal velocity and if you even want to go near them.
An interceptor will tear them all up in no time, while hardly even getting hit if he knows what he's doing. The tracking isn't all that great and sitting still you can get some serious transversals.

A ceptor could blow em all for sure, but if u anchor 5 caldari sentry 45 km away from the gallentean one u could easily pop any ceptor engaged with the gallentean sentries.
Or not? :)

Sentry Drones shouldnt have a bonus damage per level, but bonus range per level. or fall off and tracking.

Inflating numbers 4tw! :)
With the current numbers, a Dominix with a pilot with maxed-out sentry drone skills might get 1000 dps out the the sentry drones. Most Dominix pilots won't have maxed out skills, and even fewer battleships will be Dominixes. Also, each sentry drone deployed is one less "normal" combat drone deployed, so you have to subtract their dps from the sentry drone dps.
Let's try the more normal battleship with 3 sentry drones and Drone Interfacing 4, Heavy Drones 4, Sentry Drone Op 4 (even those are a bit high-end, many will have only skill 3):
Base damage: 50 Rof= 2 seconds With Damage multiplier: 50*1.6= 80 With Drone interfacing IV: 80*1.8= 144 With Heavy Drone Operation IV: 144*1.20= 173 With Sentry Drone operation IV (probably 5% damage/lvl): 173*1.25= 216 damage 3 drones per 2 secs: 216*3 = 648 (idealized) DPS of sentries: 324
With the same skills, let's compare to 3 x Ogre
Base: 22 damage Rof: 2 seconds With Damage multiplier: 22*1.6= 35 With Drone interfacing IV: 35*1.8= 63 With Heavy Drone Operation IV: 63*1.20= 76 3 drones per 2 secs: 76*3 = 228 (idealized) DPS of Ogres: 114
So sentries get +210 idealized DPS in this scenario comprared to Ogres. Sure, it's a nice boost, but it'll take quite a fleet of battleships before the combined extra dps reaches 5k

All that said, sentries may well be too powerful with those stats, can't really say without testing them out in practice. Theoretical number crunching always loses out to real combat.
