You can't really compare Eve and Wow, they are completely different games. (Not trying to state the obvious, it's just it takes a different kind of person to really enjoy Eve)

Originally by: Dark Shikari There is no PvP in World of Warcraft.
World of Warcraft is PvP as much as Counterstrike is PvP.
You are not competing for any reward, as enemies do not drop loot.
You are not competing for territory, as you cannot control territory at all and there is no benefit for doing so if you could.
You are not defeating the enemy in any way except forcing him to respawn.
You are not winning anything except a frag point.
That isn't PvP. Its Counterstrike with Orcs.
Now you're putting your own definition on PvP... The fact is and remains though, in World of Warcraft if you are interested in fighting other players within their system you get a lot more opportunities to do so then in Eve Online, simply because you don't have to grind for money every time you lose a fight.
I agree that WoW PvP has much less substance then Eve PvP, because the rewards are few and the risks even fewer, and the factions are in a default state of war that can't be influenced or won ever. That doesn't change the fact that if you're a PvPer in WoW you have to deal with a lot less PvE then in Eve in the long run.
Why? Because in Eve the risks in PvP are extreme, and the rewards virtually none.

Everything you do in WoW is pointless Everything you do in EVE has consequences
WoW is probably the worst fantasy MMO I have ever played EVE is probably the best sci-fi MMO I have ever played

EVE is largely a player-driven universe ... hardly the case with WoW.
It's a choice of paradigm. If you want a game where the dev-provided content is the main thing, then WoW is one of the best games of that kind. If you want a game where the player-provided content is the main thing, honestly EVE is the best there is. So it depends on what you like ... tho I think that more sophisticated gamers would prefer a more player-driven world. ---------------------------

This is a common myth. Alliance politics are extremely complex and hellish to sort out.
One of my corp members wanted to nominate me for a FIX JCoS, and I ran away like a scared bunny rabbit. The kind of responsibility you get when you become important in alliance politics is astounding. Ask anyone who has been a major leader in EVE, and he'll know exactly what I mean.
Or just read a council forum for any major alliance.
NBSI is the last alliance whose politics could be called "simplistic." - Proud member of the [23].

In EvE you can make changes and matter,
Forgot to refuel the alliance Pos? People will remind you of that *grin*
Did you rob a corp blind? People wont let you forget it.
Did you fought bravely or lead your team to victory in a fleetfight? People will remember you for it
Did you make a trolling thread? Then I wont forgete it.

Hm well, the way Alliances present themselves to the Empire-based population is via videos that show them killing someone at the other end of the galaxy and you're just going: "How the hell did they ever get in a war while being 60 jumps apart, anyways, nice fight..."
I wanted to join an alliance at some point in time, but since there will be a load of new drone skills out I'll hold on to those implants for a while longer I think...

Go read the corp and alliance forums a bit. And by read, I mean "not the alt flame threads."

Outside of PVP EVE is more like Everquest(Kunark/SoV era), you had to work for your fat lewts, theres a sense of acheivement when you get that new something(in the case of EVE getting that shiny new Caracal). ive also found a compairable community here to old school EQ days. people are helpfull and dont mind random banter in the chat channels. goto new games like WoW or EQ2 and most people could care less about chatting, they just want to know is there loot, where and how.

EVE is a playground. You can do whatever you want. There are no rides, no lines.
In World of Warcraft, you are strictly limited to following the path Blizzard wants you to follow. You can list the activities a normal player does on one hand.
In EVE, you are free. This cannot be stated enough.
The other big difference is the death penalty. The only thing in which there is any remote freedom in WoW is the PvP, and since there's no death penalty, there's no point in doing it. You don't get loot from kills or anything.
i heard this description in the Fanfest 2005. so im guessing Dark shikari was there also. ok try this. is there or will there be a WOW fanfest?
I saw it on the slides presented at the FF'05 :) __________

I have abrother who plays WoW. He's lvl 60 and is currently in Molten Core being ownicated by ebil, uberhard bosses. He is starting to find WoW kinda boring and doesn't PvP anymore since it has absolutely no point. He doesn't really get EVE since it's very complicated and says that theres no point in anything, you just mine all day long or kill random people for no purpose other than killing. He does addmit the PvP is much more fun tho. I like WoW too, it's fun to watch. Pretty boring to play tho.

i would say if they are wow players they proble wouldnt like the skill system that eve has. alot of gammers like too advance via time put into the game but eve is in real life time for skill uping, so time put into the game dont amount too much other then isk or objects you wish too earn in game. alot of them who are into combat wouldnt wont too wait a year befor they can be truly effective in most ships.
welcom too eve!

WoW PVP? after killing the guy wearing uber epic armor and weapon set for the seventeenth time, the taste of victory turns to dust since you lost as much time killing him as he did. and you gained nothing, he lost nothing. an hour wasted.

more than an hour......but point stands........no point to playing WoW....only gain there is no loss...its like a fantasy world out there for the people who are blind to reality (not talking about the fact they're dancing around with pixie dust and ferries)

I'm Amerikan and as far as communites go... the US WoW community is HORRIBLE. I played on the EU WoW servers for a month or two and it was the greatest WoW-related experience of my life. WoW was fun but Eve is the game I always come back to for reasons already mention by other people. The community of Eve rocks also. ---- Would you like some cries with your whaaamburger? |

i hate too say this too you but if your a quake player or CS player you are competing too be the best in the world. (ie) your goal is too be in the alstar leage of the top 10 in the world. the frag means nothing too a first person gamer only the skill of the kill. it takes a long time too gain the skill reflex and the skill of movment too be among the top players in the Quake/UT/CS leages. only eve could wish too have the player base of quake/UT/CS. you shuld play and understand these games befor you knock them.

Edited by: High Sierra on 10/12/2005 23:42:01 WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy back when I was a necromancer in DAOC I remember all the discussions going on about WoW and how good it was going to be. The day WoW was released, the population on the DAOC servers completely died. I can remember running through some of the most populated areas wondering where the hell everyone was.
After about a month alot of people were back on DAOC basically saying 'WoW looks pretty, but its not as good.' Unfortunately after that DAOC took a nosedive cos they screwed around with it too much (although interestingly I heard later on that the game devs opened up some new servers that took the game right back to its basics, before any of the later addons turned up)
I had a choice. WoW or EvE. There is no other game I have ever played that has EVER given me an adrenalin rush like EvE when it comes to PvP. Even taking part in a huge castle siege on DAOC never even came close and that was pretty good fun.
I think the other thing about EvE is the freedom to do what you want. Whereas on WoW your character is limited to the skills of its race/class in EvE, you can be whatever you want to be. If you change your mind later its not a problem, just a matter of time spent training the relevant skills. (but you can PvP from day 1 whichever profession you choose)
My own character high Sierra started life as a miner I later changed my mind and I've now got a character who can happily do both so if I get bored of ratting or PvP I can slip into my carebear outfit and spend a relaxing evening mining.
one thing though, the carebear outfit is optional. And its best not to let your mum/wife/girlfriend see you wearing it whilst you're sat at your computer........

If they're happy with WoW, they're most likely not the type to play EvE. This my experience so far.
If you're still going to try though, just let 'em make trial accounts and tell them "you have to see for yourself, because whatever I tell you will not make you feel what it's like playing this game".
