The feature is fine. Granted it has made people a little paranoid... This morning I tried to donate my remaining snowballs by leaving them in a can in Jita where we had been enjoying a massive snowball fight. As soon as I typed this fact into chat, people started yelling, "No! He'll gank you!", "Oh yeah he certainly will!", etc. etc.
Of course I was doing no such thing so I was a little offended that complete strangers would make this assumption. But in fairness I guess it's hard to tell the difference between "free snowballs" and "take the snowballs so I can shoot you in the eye".
Where was I? Oh yeah. So aside from a touch of paranoia, which isn't such a terrible thing, can flagging was a good idea.

Might be fun to do that, actually.
Only load your snowball launcher halfway and drop the other half in a can. Get someone to grab it, lock them, scramble them......then hit them with snowballs while they panic heheheh. Then let them go.

Baiting and killing newbs is probably griefing and definitely lame. OP should watch his karma...it'll bite him back someday.
Newbs need to be warned. You can accidentally get Concordokkened pretty easily in the game when you're a newb, and they are careful to mention in the tutorial that you shouldn't fire on a turret unless you want to die. Tutorial probably needs some info in there about not picking up cans that don't belong to you.
To people telling newbs to thicken their skin, were you that thick-skinned on day 1? If your first experience in the game had been somebody saying "Trust me...haha j/k you're dead" you might not be playing today. Newbs get some leeway because they are newbs.
People like OP should know better.

I dont usually bother with threads that are this long but in this case I will make an exeption.
The problem is not the new game mechanic, the problem is that a large number of not very nice people wants this to go down as a failed implementation and thus are doing all they can to grief newbies.
What they are doing is basicly the same as creating 20+ free accounts, set up 3 suicide kessies in each and start repetedly podding newbies claiming its a broken feature.
The people desperately WANT the loot/jetison can flagging to be deemed as an utter mistake so that it can be removed and they will be able to go back to stealing from people with no risk (not that there is much now ither).
To my mind it boggels the mind that people actually consider it worthwhile to kill fresh newbies, personally I tend to give them some good advice and a helping hand if I can.
In short, Chimeny Christmas and the likes, you are verry sad little boys that really need to get out more.

A good start would be to ban players like the OP. Right now!
At least their account should be given a mark, if it is an alt, it is no problem to find out who is the main.
Right - CCP's own rules demand it. See the postings above.

I never paid attention to the original debates about can-flagging and who advocated what, but I can't imagine the carebears requested a feature that actually would require you to offensively attack a thief. Unless the actual request was for Concord to do the dirty work...
Wasn't this always more of a corp mining operation request?
And while I think it is a good system in theory, insufficient imagination by CCP on the design leads to this griefing tactic. As has been said, there needs to be a way to make a can public, then you can tell the newbie to request that the can owner do that. Doesn't eliminate all the griefing, but solves a fair bit.
