As in the title really, just wondering if someone would actually trust one.
Someone told me sometimes pirates are the only ones you can trust. What situation would cause that?

Yes, they are one of the only groups of people worthy of trust. We have a few douchebags in our ranks but for the most part, we're trustworthy.
I say that because our loyalty and lack of nuking you is easily represented by a number, in ISK.

some pirates can be trusted, up to a point.
you wouldn't trust them to move your BPOs, but you would trust them not to kill you if you pay the ransom

if they say they'll ransom you, they'll keep their word. if they took your money and blew you up anyway, no one would ever pay ransoms.

There are a few pirates known in game for being honourable, but I generally work on the principle of not trusting anyone I don't know when I'm in low-sec, pirate or not.

Quoted for truth. If you are in low sec, do not trust anyone you don't know.

It is all those omni-anti-pirates you have to watch out for. I remember once I was approaching a gate and had to ask an anti-anti-anti-anti-anti-anti-pirate for a time out so I could count the number of anti's so I could figure out if it was a trick or not. ---- Would you like some cries with your whaaamburger? |

You can buy trust...
But you cannot expect trust....
A pirate will respect his bargain if the ISK is right, anyone else can ditch you at anytime... why ? Because they have nothing to win or lose.

No trust for ANYONE especially pirates, until they earn it.
And just for the record, I've been ransomed three times. Once I self destructed (I'm not paying 5mil for a 1mil ship), once I payed and got podded anyway. And once I refused to pay and called in my huge gang and bashed the **** out of the foolish pirate. (next time, look at the corp of the 11 people in local before you pick on one of them)

I never trust any pirates-- since all they want to do is blow up my ship instead of trying to ransom me in my experience. Especially E-R, CONIN, Clankillers, and the rest of the Syndicate wannabes.
At least in Syndicate, there are no pirates, only losers who camp with interceptors and run away from anything that isn't a lone frigate or a hauler

Pirates are the only ones you can trust? In Crime Online? Lol. Actually, in Eve, you cannot trust ANYONE, apart from your Alt's obviously or possibly blood relatives. Maybe perhaps your real-life wife or girlfriend, if you have that kind of relationship.

Quite often though, the least trustworthy people are the ones who blatantly go out of their way to befriend you, be nice, get "in with the guys" or otherwise slime their slug-like bodies down your Local or Corp chat window.

I'd say this is my view as well. Not sure I could trust them to blow up my ship anyway. I'd probs take a run for it.

Sorry, the "trust a pirate because you can pay them not to hurt you" arguement doesn't hold water. That's not really a trust relationship, if you perceive that as a trust relationship you may have a bad home life.

the point is:
there are some pirates who will kill you if you pay. there are some (most) who won't
thats the difference between a trustworthy pirate and an untrustworthy one.

i got blown up by a gatecamper once, he destroyed my iti5 then left my pod alone (i think he could have easily podded me as well) when i finally was on the safe side of the gate i checked his info and his corps info... 'we ransom'
???
Ransom? ransom what? u didn't ransom me thats for sure, which was silly as well cause if they had ransommed me i would prolly gladly have paid a few mill for safe passage, esp cause i had to go through the same system again.
yes, trust pirates or people that claim to be one, sure, go right ahead, and if u do, go buy this shuttle of me for 1 bill isk, it's a special shuttle which lets u into jove space

DOn't trust people you don't know.
Don't trust people you DO know.
Trina Tron from Lordless and I get along well, but I'm willing to bet as we sat at a gate shooting the sh*t, our ships would be having a mexican standoff. ----------------------------------------------- MAKE THE MACROERS SCREAM |

No.
Kind of a pointless question, since who in their right mind trusts anyone in an online environment if they don't know the person in real life.

Pirates tend to keep their word with people they respect. Earning a pirate's respect is generally a fairly difficult thing to do. Generally, I would not trust a pirate you don't know well.
Ransoms are a different matter. If a pirate is in an actual pirate corp, you can trust them to release you after paying the ransom.

I would trust honorable pirates, i.e. the ones that dont just sit on a gate in a boosted scorp and try for easy ganks but actually go out and work for their money. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Trust Pirates?
In general trust noone in EvE if you dont know them well.
Ransoms are a bit different. A Pirate that pods someone who has paid ransom for his life is hurting the profession.
If you get killed by a pirate (who is in a pirate corp) after paying him ransom i would report the matter to Eve-Pirate
