I am also having this problem on my mac mini, only running one client with no other software open.
The connection is atrocious, freezes for minutes on end even with basic actions (skill queue or character sheet) and crashes to the usual 'socket closed' error message - sometimes before I get to the character screen.
It was perfectly playable until about a week and a half ago but now it takes me almost 30 minutes to even get to the point where I can get my skill queue to update. I can't even think about undocking. |

System: iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011 Processor 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB Serial Number N/A Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Connection: 2MB ADSL 256 kB/sec download - 102kB/sec upload
Back playing for over a month and thought to post my experience so far.
Running four clients (1 x original 3 x evecloner tool)
Graphics Settings: Screen Resolution: 2516 x 1369 (custom via SwitchResX) native 2560 x 1440. Play generally in windowed mode.
Initially setting all to Optimize Settings for Memory then adjusting each setting until it runs consistently around the 60fps cap. For my setup this is;
Graphic Content Settings:
Resource Cache Enabled [y] (I have plenty of memory on computer and graphics card) HDR Enabled [n] Load Station Environment [n] Anti-Aliasing [High] Post Processing [None] Shader Quality [Low] Texture Quality [High] LOD Quality [High] Shadow Quality [Low] Interior Effects [High] Interior Shader Quality [High]
Other: Use Multithreaded OpenGL [y] Present Interval [Interval One]
With these settings I have not had a single crash in over a months pretty heavy play (6-10 hour sessions) The only freeze crash I experienced was when first creating a clone. After that it has run fine.
Main activities are mining in own corp fleet. Ice and Ore; Hauling 9-13 jumps; Ratting. Nothing very graphics intensive really yet.
Few notes:
1. I never run Torrents in the background while playing. This will consistently cause the freeze crash. Whether it is a network traffic issue or computer side disk activity I am not sure.
2. The only other apps I run at the same time are Mail, Safari (browsing EVE sites sometimes YouTube for related videos). Activity Monitor and Console occasionally to check activity.
3. Load Station Environment while a nice feature kills performance if any characters dock. This is disabled and fps never drops when docked for all clients. I would have this enabled when playing a single client as it works well generally on the Mac and is an aesthetic choice.
4. HDR and Post Processing make a big hit on performance with multiple clients so are disabled. I would enable these with a single client as again they do make a difference.
5. In a room with an ambient temperature of 23-ŚC the iMac runs at a consistent 83-85-ŚC with all four clients running. There appears to be no issue with heat control.
Scanning through previous posts I would say that, as with other Mac MMO type games 4GB of RAM is really not enough to provide consistent play given the overhead of the OS X and any other running apps. Personally I would say 8GB is a decent minimum and more will help.
This is true even with 32-bit apps/games which can only access up to 4GB of addressable space.
Also, integrated chips like the Intel HD on MacBooksMB Air etc., especially on older models, will always struggle in a graphically intensive environments. Running multiple clients included.
One of the biggest issues with these freeze crashes is that trhey generate no .crash log or .hang log even so it's hard to check and see what may be happening.
I played last around 2010 and did experience the freeze crash fairly often with no crash report requiring force quit etc. So I do understand the frustrations. just want to put the information out there for comparision. |

I've been getting the silent crashes all of a sudden lately.
It's always when the application is in the background, either on autopilot or just sitting in a hangar.
It's been getting extremely frequent, though. I switch to another app, switch back, find it frozen, force quit, restart, then repeat 8-10 times a day.
This is with a single client running, on lowest settings, on a 2010 MBP with 4GB. It hasn't been an issue for a very long time. |

TLDR: Turning off UI Scaling may be a workaround for this problem.
Ever since Retribution, I've been plagued with this freezing problem and have tried all kinds of workarounds. I, too, was heavily swayed by the networking theories in this thread, but no matter what I tried I still got that f'n hang. I've really found no rhyme or reason for it. I thought it was related to the UI (i.e. right after a click, a menu selection, etc.), but I've had it happen in the middle of an RvB fleet fight!
I also thought it might be related to how busy the system was, but I participated in the 30,000 ship FFA in RvB and hit the problem twice (which is very good for the 6+ hours I was involved).
So, last week, I started from scratch and noted my steps very carefully. It occurred to me that one thing I did not try was to leave UI-scaling off. (I have been using UI-scaling since it became available).
I've been playing for eight days with UI-scaling turned off and I've only hit the problem once (I'm not sure it was the same problem either -- I was AFK for 30+ minutes and came back to the hang accompanied by a sound-loop that is typical of the hang).
Anyway, I wanted to pass this on to the other Mac users out there, in hopes that it can help.
If it does help, it might be a useful clue for CCP.
Cheers,
- Ilian

Hey guys
I'm new to EVE and I've been experiencing the same problem, but I agree that there seems to be some kind of connection with the UI scaling. I tried going with UI scaling 90% but nothing changed so I assumed that applying 110% UI scaling wouldn't change a thing so I continued to probe around. But after a lot of researching and confusion I decided to try UI scaling 110% and it worked. I haven't had a crash in about two days now, I used to have them about every 5 minutes so it's a great improvement.
Although scaling the UI to 110% seems to work around the problem for the moment there seems to be some interference with the EVE client regarding torrent clients, thus I am just trying other applications just to see if there's more applications than just torrent clients which interferes. As of now I haven't found anything that interferes, I've tried some standard applications one might have installed (Safari, Skype, Twitter). But finding interfering applications can take a lot of time so I can't say anything for certain after just a couple of days :P
I hope this helped anyone experiencing the same problems :)

I'm also having his problem on my Mac Pro running 10.6.8. Today it got worse: I freezed once while in-game and now whenever I start the game again, it won't even get to the login screen.
I'm gonna try and get some logs to see if something weird can be seen here... |

Can't get this thing started, just bought game, downloaded, and has taken me 6 hours to get through the tutorial with all the freezing (granted some of that time is frustration, not immediately logging back in). This does not bode well for having just quit previous MMO and started one that I can't get anything done in.
Running OSX 10.7.5, 2.5 ghz i7, 8 GB ram, intel HD 512 3000 graphics (radeon HD 6770M), core temp not rising more than 114 F. Rebooted. Two installs. Graphics tweaks between. Windowed and fullscreen= same issues.

Mine starting freezing up frequently too like 2 weeks ago. But then I realized LoL freezed almost 100% of the time. Since both are wine (ok Cedega is paid wine) I looked at LoL logs and found errors in the packet transmission.
I disabled the firewall and LoL stopped freezing.
Since Eve didn't froze as often I couldn't establish if that is the case. If someone can test we can find out. |

1.1.3 did not fix the freeze issue. My almost sure fire way to get a freeze did in fact get me one. (Open 3 clients, get everyone in space, go to firefox, open a set of tabs.) Client #2 froze. Annoyingly, #2 was the Orca pilot and fleet commander. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

I managed to make a few tests, and tried a few things that the GMs suggested: - It freezes either in Windowed or Fullscreen - It freezes with apps running behind (including Torrent client) and with nothing else running - I'm only running one client and sometimes freezing every 5 minutes - Even with Sound and EVE Voice off, still freezing... - After freezing a lot on my Mac Pro (10.6.8), I tried running it on my MacBook Air (10.8.2) and it was freezing too - I freeze in various situations, that do not necessarily include combat. Sometimes just sitting there launching and handling probes while in the Map view yields a freeze
I'll try and reproduce it anyway, and try and find some better way to reproduce it. I managed to get a sampling of the game as it was frozen, and will attach it to a bug report. There are indeed a few threads that are blocked on critical sections, but of course none of them can be clearly identified... |

Same on MBP15" and iMac27" (both two years old). Windowed. Interesting: System does not believe the app has frozen (shows up black, not red, in activity monitor). Uses 3-4% CPU, so it's doing *something*, but not a lot. Freezes roughly once an hour or so. |

Interestingly, this is really not consistent at all. I had a day yesterday without any freeze and I played quite a bit. Other days I'll get a freeze every 5 minutes. From what I saw in the sampling I managed to get, the game is not actually freezed, just deadlocked, so the rendering and events won't get handled. But the sound is still running (when it's enabled).
I'm still trying to reproduce, but even though I'm doing quite the same things while in game, there seems to be no consistent pattern at all.

[Edit : typo] If you are mining, the ship continues filling with ore too. And if you got multiple clients running and one freezes, the others will not see the ship of the frozen client hang around until you force quit it. Only then will it warp off. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Kettch: Is there any difference in the number of other apps you have running when it deadlocks quickly vs. slowly? I'm trying to figure out if there are any additional variables contributing here.
FWIW, I've had this deadlock behavior happen occasionally as well. It may be because I had a lot of apps running (some with large files open) relative to my amount of RAM (4GB), but I haven't tested to make sure that's a significant variable. Malcanis, Ripard Teg, and Trebor Daehdoow for CSM 8

I solved this problem by using "optimize settings" on the "display & graphic" menu under "graphic content settings" tab; whenever choosing one or the other it prevent from freezing the game, that is quite boring.
Good luck. |

I've had this issue for some time, but I seem to have gotten rid of it now.
I noticed that the client tends to crash when other applications uses a lot of connections, not sure exactly why (some conflict with ports perhaps?) but what I also noticed this morning was that the Eve Online client was not listed as an exception in the OS X firewall. After adding it everything seems to work well (only have one client running at a time). Earlier I would've easily gotten 4-5 crashes by now, but it's been running very stable all day.
I'm at a late 2009 iMac 27" with Core i5 and a Radeon 4850. |

Hmm, I do have it on the firewall exceptions. I get very few lockups, but I do get them. Normally when running three clients, and web surfing. BUT
I run three clients via clones. I did not have the clones in the exceptions. I have no idea if that's needed, but I added them anyway. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

I just do anything in EVE, go onto my out of game web browser, then I switch back to EVE and suddenly I see my client frozen up. I can't get back on EVE unless I shut down my computer. its very annoying. |

Came across this game while looking for a change from the usual MMO's I play and immediately fell in love with the concept so grabbed my credit card and signed up for an account. Unfortunately, the game has become rather frustrating to play as every 15-30 minutes on average I receive the message "The socket was closed" and then I am booted out of the game. Reading through the last TWENTY PAGES OF POSTS ABOUT SIMILAR ISSUES SINCE 2011 I realized that it is not a problem with me, or my brand new Macbook Pro, but with some part of the EVE software. Can somebody PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE to support us Mac players please?
THANK YOU!!!!!

I multibox 2 accounts, and they generally work fine on the 21" iMac (2.7 GHz i5, 8 GB Ram, nVidia 640M). The only problem I've ever had is that at some point, maybe when the client is minimized while auto-piloting around, or maybe when I'm actively doing something, the client will just freeze... I can move the window around, and the cursor changes upon hover to a pointer with an arrow pointing down (much like the cursor when you hover over a sidebar item).
Dunno what causes it, but I'm forced to 'Force Quit' and relaunch. Sadness... |
