Edited by: capt on 31/12/2005 08:19:55 It is as you read it.......
I was logged in and just minding my own business being docked in a station and went afk for a couple of hours.
When I returned to my PC I saw I got this EVE message telling me to "Please type 3 letters"......... And aparrantly "lost" connection after that?
I mean seriously if this isn't some auto program to remove afk people to improve the lag (didn't read anything about this in patch notes or anywhere mind you), I AM SERIOUSLY WONDERING IF GM'S DON'T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO THAN BOOT AFK PEOPLE .........uhm macro miners anyone......

Well considering I don't go AFK for really long extended periods of time without logging off... I don't believe I'll have a reaction to it.

Hmm yeah a player, docked in a station doing ...nothing for hours on end. I don't really see how that in any way could have been interpreted as being a macro-miner.
If such a automated program was implemented (which IMHO isn't all that bad) then wouldn't it have been nice to have read something about it in the patch notes or anywhere else?

Surely a macro program replicates mouse movements and keyboard input......therefore AFK macro mining will not be affected by this, as the is input going on.
It's probably just to free up server time if someone (like yourself) is logged in and doing absolutely nothing! Why you'd want to do that, I don't know.

Nah - that sounds like the normal dialog you get whenever you type less than three letters into an edit box ie;naming a can, searching for someone.
But, seriously, dude - you walked away from your PC and left it on unattended, logged into a password protected service for two hours? That's not a very security concious attitude. You're also admitting to being an energy hog. The world is facing an energy crisis, hadn't you noticed? If you're leaving your PC for longer than half an hour then turn the damn' thing off. -- (Battle hardened miner)

2 reasons, of which the major 1 is that I am a lazy git.
1) I sell T2 mods on the market, and like to see if I am sellin OK or not or if I receive any emails with orders.
2) here comes reason 2, because a lot of you will probably say that I can just as easily log back in to check those things.... Indeed I can, but loggin in doesn't exactly happen in the blick of an eye does it? (not for me anyway....) So there...that's the lazy part for ya.
And just being there in a station, and can be wrong of course, would hardly take up that many resources from the server or would it?

Why don't you be nice to your PC and close EVE when you're gone for an extended period of time?

You're not complaining about how CCP boots idle players, you're complaining about how lazy you are. If this is the best thing you have to complain about, you really need to re-evaluate your life. ---------- |

If you read my posts more thorough then you would notice that I didn't complain about the existence of a program booting AFK-players( which we haven't established yet that it really exists at all). I was basicly complaing about the lack of information to the player base if indeed they're using such a device.
And if such a device does not exist then I am indeed complaing that I got booted by some overzealous persn for reasons not really known to me. Please point me to the exact sentences in the EULA stating that one can not leave his/her computer for 2 or 3 hours while being logged in.............

Edited by: Serpensis on 31/12/2005 11:09:10 The 3 letter question appeared for me too, so I contacted support, and they informed that if "people and places" was open, and you switched from fullscreen to window, or tabbed out and in, this would occur. I tested it, and it appears to be valid.
Unfortunately, its not a macrodetection routine :(

were you in the middle of a mission? were you in the middle of some great big furball on a gate in Jita? did you lose your ship? did you get podded? did you lose anything?
I fail to see your problem with this.
Mind you, it would be nice to have some kind of program that gets rid of people who are inactive for a period of time (say half an hour).
anything that reduces lag is good imho.

You werent even playing the game when you got booted so what are you complaining about? If CCP didnt do this, you'd start complaining about lag next
Go CCP! great idea ... boot the inactives, save on the lag

Edited by: Ayla Vanir on 31/12/2005 11:53:40 I leave my PC on 24/7 to save wear and tear on the mechanical (moving) parts of my computer. Components such as disk drives and monitors tend to wear more due to power-up/power-down cycle frequency, than through sustained use.
That is more important to me than the self-righteous feeling I'd get when denigrating other people on MMO game forums about their consumption habits. Some of whom may drive their SUVs through McDonald's drive-thrus, fail to recycle the paper-packaging, then use too much TP while off-loading their personal waste products in their low-pressure, high-capacity flush toilets.
I leave my computer unattended for long periods of time, sometimes while I'm playing EVE. I like to do this. It is a convenience factor for me. I make up for my lost kharma by not driving an SUV or eating at McDonald's. I have a high-pressure, low-volume toilet. It's made out of recycled Big Mac wrappers.
To the OP: I don't think you were logged off by a GM or some automated program. But I could be wrong.

For those thinking this will help lag: Have you thought about what it takes in terms of processing power and network ping/pong to query and confirm whether or not an EVE client is inactive? Would you like to get booted while reading pages in the IGB - or ALT-TABbed out of EVE to search for answers to your in-game questions? If a major cause of lag is inactivity of a client, then there's a real problem with the application design. I think this lag discussion was based on ignorance though.]

ItÆs not a great idea it really hurts gang assist pilots like me. I am no longer allowed to sit afk boosting my gang mates. Even worse you can no longer let the gang leader warp you from belt to belt while your modules are on auto cycle boosting them. As your not turning modules on or off your classed as AFK so you get booted while under fire from rats. What if you do your talking on TS or another chat program?

If CCP have implemented this, then it's a good thing. Your laziness creates lag for other people.. don't like being booted? tough, we don't like lag either :)

I do play but sometimes a break is needed for various reasons. Is it really wrong to want to hunt with friend for a while go AFK and take a break while still boosting them then come back and play without being kicked out the game?
Basically your saying as I have to go AFK for a while my gang has to fly without there fleet support and perhaps stop hunting as they donÆt have the defence to keep hunting without me. That doesnt seem fair to me. I should be able to leave me ship there boosting them.
Another good example is you have a long autopilot though empire space thatÆs going take over an hour. You can no longer AFK that. Unless gate jumping resets the AFK timer.
