Do you pronounce it as an acronym, "hack", or not, "H-A-C"?
And furthermore, does ANYBODY ever refer to them as HAS or Heavy Assault Ships? Same thing with AFs, does anybody refer to them as AS or Assault Frigates? ----------------------------------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

"Heavy Assault"? The real name for them doesn't have "Cruiser" in it anywhere.

It's HAC pronounced Hack, and AF spoken as an abbreviation, A-F.
Simplifications exist for BS and BC, though sadly Cruiser and Destroyer don't roll off the keyboard.

Acronyms do not have a compound pronunciation. They are not words and are pronounced as individual letters.

EDIT: Damn, Wrayeth, you just barely beat me to it in my own thread.
EDIT 2: In case you don't feel like reading the link, the bottom line is: Pronounce each letter in an initialism. Pronounce an acronym as a word. ----------------------------------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

Ever heard of a little organization called N.A.S.A.? It's pronounced "nassa", though it's an acronym for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The general rule of thumb is that if the acronym makes a pronouncable word, then that's how it's spoken. If the acronym does not make a prounouncable word, such as F.B.I., the individual letters are prounounced. -Wrayeth

So much cooler to say H-A-C. I can imagine an evil overlord saying "SEND IN THE H-A-C!" but "SEND IN TEH HACK" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Nah, that one's got to be an initialism. P-D-U.
But seriously, how did we all start calling them PDU's? They're actually Power Diagnostic System, so why not PDS? I mean Heavy Assault Ship is stupid compared to Heavy Assault Cruiser, but Power Diagnostic System isn't any better or worse than Power Diagnostic Unit. Did it used to be Unit instead of System, and I've just forgotten when they changed it? Or was it always this way? ----------------------------------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

I think it's just because we got used to saying RCU for the reactor controllers and then PDS started to be used more and we said PDU out of habit.

H-A-C sounds better, but I find myself saying Assault Cruiser more than anything else. It sounds cooler than either one of those. "Heavy" is a bit redundant because it's extra syllables that don't mean anything if you're saying the whole words, because there's no Assault Cruiser that aren't Heavy.
So for me, either H-A-C or Assault Cruiser. ----------------------------------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

I use a deimos so usually I said either Deimos or if it's not a deimos I say HAC. Though I've become familiar with the Zealot and Sac. Also I say cerb or cerberus for that one because it really is important to distinguish between the cerb and other HACs. You're dealing with a different animal there.

They've used to be named Power Diagnostic Unit, iirc.
(that mentioned, it takes exactly as long to say "power diag" as it takes to say "p-d-u", and the former is likely to cause far less confusion... ;s
