I had that problem with both of my computers it tured ouit to be my chipset drivers needed to be update I run a Asus A9250 powered by ati. So what I had to do is completely removed all my video and sound drivers then login on safemode and downloaded all my motherboard drivers,Chipset and so forth them install and then install all the video and sound drivers. Works great for me and I am running a AMD2400 XP and the same amount of ram also go into you cache files and open prefs.ini and I think it is on the 2nd line of text it is called buffersize and on defaults on 80 so I took out the 80 and used half of my physical memory witch is the same amount u are running buffersize=80 then went to buffersize=384 now reboot and then when you go to put pass word in on eve STOP!!!Hit ctrl&alt&del go to processes and look for eve.exe, Right click, go to set priority and click on high...... Now put in password and see if that works help me out so much I run eve and have not really had alot of lag and or CTD's for a while now.

Motherboard: Asus KR7A-133 AMD Athlon XP 1600+ 768MB RAM PC2100 (they are matching as far as i know) (one 256 one 512) Geforce Ti4600 128mb (PNY I think is the make? I don't know, I won it off some Star Wars Jedi Knight / Gateway/nVidia contest a few years ago, has been working great for me minus being a hair off for battlefield2, yet having more power than a card capable of running it...stupid shader version or whatever)
160GB Western Digital HD (SATA) (secondary where eve is installed) 40GB Maxtor HD (primary for windows and other system files) Windows XP Pro Sony CDRW/DVDR (i heart this drive, inexpensive and fast) Floppy disk drive (wow it's old) Zip disk drive Eagle Power supply - 300w
PCI Cards: WinTV Soundblaster 512 Network card (linksys, i believe..that or netgear, but i think linksys) Adaptec PCI -> SATA card
Note that the PCI -> SATA card is new as is the HD, but I had EVE running off a 120GB IDE drive recently. This is a recent change as of two days ago. I don't believe it to be the reason for any problems, although I hoped it would fix some...wishful thinking.
I run spyware doctor and nothing else for virus/spyware, minus windows firewall.
That's about it...Newest(er) nvidia drivers. Newest bios, newest sound card drivers. New all drivers I believe.
I disabled sound in EVE. I ran a memory test and it didn't show any problems with the ram.
I am so baffled it's almost unbearable. This is a somewhat recent installation of windows...It hasn't been on the machine for more than 8 months.
On another note: Age of Empires 3 crashes to desktop on me too...and gives me a windows error message about send or don't send.
Second vote on the power supply not being up to snuff. The nVidia card requires more than a 300W supply IIRC, and you have (by the looks of it) very few if any expansion slots left. You have a couple power hogs installed there, not counting the vid card.
Also, check case temps. If you are in a mini or mid tower you don't have alot of room for air to circulate to keep things cool.
Furthermore, my nVidia Ti4600 suffered a fan failure about a month after I got it. If this is the only fan malfunctioning in your system, it could certainly cause the problems you are suggesting. If the vid card overheats the current app running will terminate, but sometimes XP will not crash. Then, while you are clicking "Don't send this report" and thrashing in frustration, the card cools down, you go to fire it up again, and you get back in... until the problem repeats itself.
Finally, up your memory if you have some cash left. I wouldn't recommend less than a gig for any XP gaming machine.

Edited by: Guillight BLue on 12/01/2006 15:35:39 It's true that 300W is a bit low for AMD systems!
But if the powersupply wouldnt be sufficient:
1. The motherboard would hold on start-up and the system will not boot at all! I know as I experienced it myself few years ago.
2. If the Videocard would have power-problems he wouldn't have problems with EVE only, but with all other games, programs too ;-)
But it can't hurt to fit a 400W powersupply in it :-P -------------- Guillight BLue [L F C] <IFC> |

Right I'll have my 10 isk worth too!
300W is low. I'm running an Athlon XP3000+ and I had to buy a 500W to power everything including graphics card. I too am suffering from CTD's at this moment in time and a serious amount of lag. I think the lag is casued by the route my connection takes to EVE (results in a 20-50% packet loss over their network only!), and becuase of the lag it will CTD saying connection has been lost. Also, EVE seems to be very CPU intensive, and as such CPU temp rises. My machine has a built in cutout so if the temp reaches a setpoint it will stop all processes using alot of cpu time - hence ctd with no reason.
Must get a new heatsink! And ISP!

Eve is quite heavy on the processor if your graphics card doesn't take the load and overheating can cause it to CTD quite often. My dual processor did that when I had the AMD heatsinks in and kept on crashing Eve until I changed them to Heatpipes and now they run at a nice cool 40 degrees and I can play eve all night long without one CTD.
Use a Vacuum cleaner to suck out the dust from the heatsink, it will collect in lumps just under the fan. If there's a lot of dust, look at getting a new heatsink.
Worth a try and keeps your processor from overheating even if it doesn't solve your Eve problem entirely.

Months later and I'm STILL crashing randomly....
I disabled things on the computer, windows audio service, the audio card itself, tv card, etc.
I didn't remove the cards, just disabled them.
Maybe power supply? Maybe not.
The game DOES crash in Age of Empires 3 too. Randomly.
What do both of these games share in common? I havn't really tested too many other video games...I guess counter-strike 1 doesn't count it's not as sophisticated.
This kinda sux cuz I have a character with nearly 25mil skill points that is stuck in empire due to fear for crashing and losing a ship unfairly in 0.0 :(

Have you tried re-installing windows? Or have you gotten the latest DirectX?
Have you un-installed eve and re-installed?
I would make a backup and re-install all. If it still crashes then I would say it is a hardware connected issue.

Have you checked this thread? Here
Recently we all (those of us in that thread) had problems both getting into the game and frequent CTDs when we did get in that were caused by something CCP did on the 8th of March. It might be worth looking at.

I would agree with the previous posters who have suggested these 2 things:
1. Reformat and reinstall Windows. If it ran before without problems It is quite possible your windows is just.. lol.. 'old'.
2. Well 300W is too little with all those add-ons and disks you have. Double so if you have overclocked. You didnt say you have, but ppl forget to mention it sometimes. 400W at least is my suggestion.
Good luck

one other thing to note: I have very seldomly experienced reboots. Doesn't have to be while playing a game either. My computer has restarted before randomly. I leave it run 24/7 pretty much.
Maybe your problem doesn't come from the client but rather from your hardware. First u must check that your system works fine with only agp card, harddrive. Other stuff that u have u must remove it.
I mean in the end u must have hdd, ram, graphics card. If the system works in this configuration than your problem might be from one of your components (it might be even from your network card).
If the system still is rather unstable u must check your ram, and u're hdd with specialised programs. The memory one is Memtest (just google it) and the hdd one depends on your manufacterer (Maxtor,Seagate, Western).
If still after u check, something doesn't show up, u must consider going on after the processor and the mainboard (i mean checking them). Cheers mater (hope for your return in eve as soon as possible). If u have other questions just post them.
P.S. I forgot to tell u about your power supply from u're case. Try with another (just borrow one from one of your friends). Sometimes it is simple as replacing your old power supply.

Edited by: Yaman on 29/03/2006 17:11:40 i've done pretty much all the obvious
now the one thing i havn't done is get a new power supply... that may be my next step.
however --- this game ran before on this machine. remember I was fine w/ the power supply.
NOW is another case. the other day my video card died. I just got a new one. SO that may now force me to get a new power supply...
I unplugged drives, took out cards. I'm running with less equipment now too. Should be ok on the power.
Reinstalling windows is going to be the biggest b*tch in the world. I really hope that I don't have to do that....and a funny feeling tells me that it won't fix the problem either.
I sent off a bug report..hopefully will get answered.
oh and the new video card I got is geforce 6600.

Even though you ran some memory tests for the RAM then you should remove one stick, try the game if you still crash then install the RAM again and remove the other one and try the game again. I've had a faulty RAM which memory tests didn't detect and had frequent crashes while the bad RAM was installed. |

Pardon me if this has been said already...
This one is a long shot...
If you are using a Router, try bypassing it and connect your computer directly to your DSL/Cable Modem.
Note: before you do this, keep a note of your IP Settings. By typing "ipconfig /all" (without quotes)

Ok first off if your power supply is working 300w should be good for that system. You could check the voltage of it to make sure its giving the motherboard the correct voltages.
Secound did you ever reinstall/install the latest direct x? What about uninstalling .NET or installing the lastest one if you need it? Did you remove the nvidia desktop manager?
I would do what they said up there and try one stick of RAM at a time.
Have you checked your cpu temps? if your motherboard does not have a temp monitor touch the cpu heat sink after it crashes eve if it makes you say ouch get a new heatsink and some nice thermal paste. Maybe even a new system fan.
You can test your hard drives. All the big hard drive makers have testing tools maxtor's is here
It does seem like a software problem because if it was hardware it would reboot your system
And you could install a 2nd windows xp on the other hard drive to test if it is your windows install that is messed up.

Do you ever have any other issues running other programs? Does your system act funny ever? Do you need to hit the power button a couple times to make it boot or does it randomly reboot or BSOD? Does anything "strange" happen?

If AOE 3 is crashing as well then i say check your power supply. It may seem like it is working fine, but when you play a game it draws more power to your hardware that the game uses. so change your power supply, or if you have a second pc, just borrow the power supply from that and test it. see if that helps you out

erm - well....SOMETIMES very very seldom. The computer will restart. But I've had it restart while doing other things than playing video games.
I do leave the computer on 24/7.... I don't know. It's like twice a month it'll restart maybe three times.

Your may want to look at your Video card heat or open the sid eof the computer for a bit and see if that helps I would bet that your Video card is haveing trouble and heating up. and this would make it shut the game down or even reboot the machine(depending on your bios settings) I recommend that you look into this bacause if this has been happening for while the problem should get worse and worse as time goes by.
This is a more permenent and cheap solution to the problem, if you have the PCI slot for it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835114024
best of luck to you

Running 3 clients on one PC and no crashes in a long time. I think your CPU might be giving up the ghost. EVE is far more CPU dependent than GPU so if you are crashing it might be something wrong with your older CPU.
Possibly the cache going bad.

Such a saga about crash battles; glad to see you're still with us.
On quick glance didn't spot advice to use the logserver. If you crashes are semi-repeatable, your could run the logger, have Eve crash, save logfile and repeat couple times. This _might_ give some glues about the reason.
See the sticky in this forum for how to use logserver.
Hopefully CCP one day gets to install automated crash report system. It won't stop anything, but will help them decide which kind of issues are worth of investigating.
Isolated crash cases are always up to players (and the community) to solve, a game company simply can't afford to investigate them.
-Lasse running similar setup with Radeon 9600p, and using strictly drivers only from Windows Update.null

Haha, I invested too much into EVE lol I want it fixed so I can just enjoy it again.
At any rate, I do have some logs saved from the logserver...anyway to read them in a useful way? to figure out what my problems are??
I don't know about the CPU being bad as someone else here suggested but again - i've already invested hundreds of dollars into new components for my computer AND this same cpu ran eve before in the past just fine. course that was also when your targets had red circles and not white square boxes to indicate damage.. whatever version that was if any of you remember.
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions guys, keep em coming! :)

But can you go over what changed in your system from when it worked fine through now where it crashes? I thought I saw you say you change gfx cards and since got the problems.

Actually had a friend this was happening to as well...he just bought an entire new system :)
IMHO
Format C: as someone said OR if you have an extra drive, format it. Install your OS, EVE, and ONLY what eve needs to function. All latest patches, driver etc. With all Window's Operating Systems prior to XP, this was damn near a requirement for continued smooth running....plus I'm a neat freak...have you ever really dug into the registry :P
Does it still crash?
NO: problem solved...hopefully...Install your remaining app's. One at a time if your really paranoid, and play EVE after each new install.
YES: Remove all cards from your system that you do not need...e.g. you hopefully will ony have your Video card in the system at this point. (you could also do this the other way around...load the OS and Eve with only the video card)
Still Crash?
NO cool...dont touch the system...dont even look at it funny. And you might try speaking softly to it once in a while, just for encouragement :P
YES: YER BONED!
P.S. I dont recall anyone mentioning it previously...but is there any correlation between temperature and frequency of crashing?
Also, ALL (DC) electronics components wear out due to elctromigration. It IS possible (I didnt say probable) that your CPU/Mobo does indeed now have a malfunction where before it did not.
I drank WHAT?!!?!.....Socrates |
