Ignorance, some may call it bliss but we call it 'dumbing down' especially when national identities are concerned.
Since when has the American flag usurped the Union Jack as the symbol for 'English' in the help section? (Click on the round life saver ring and you'll see it). They speak French in Canada too, why not replace French flag with that of the Canadian one, that would make sense too, wouldn't it?.
English is spoken all over the world but the language only came from one country. If you're going to signify the language with a flag for heaven's sake use the correct one - (either the Union Jack or the St George). It's highly ironic knowing that CCP's servers are based in the UK (London) and CCP themselves are a European company.

I've noticed this, too. Still the two languages diverge enough that choosing one or the other might prove quite informative.
Incidentally, my favourite Canadian developer (BioWare) uses a Canadian flag to indicate English on their sites.

Well by using an americam flag as the icon, they are maybe being more specific as to what sort of dialect is being used on the site.
Who cares really, as long as I can understand it I don't care.
Also american market is bigger than the british market, so maybe they are trying to target the larger market. Who can blame them?

Hmmm.
If you ever get over to the States for a visit, make sure you bring a small Union Jack to hang in the back window of your car.
It won't earn you any respect, but you will be allowed to use the 'handicapped' parking spaces.

I always thought it funny sometimes you get an option for "English" and "International English". WTF is the difference?
I also remember learning...a long time ago, the metric system in elementary school. They were teaching it to use because "We will convert to it...soon". I'm STILL waiting for us to get rid of that stupid standard system. Which, IMO, isn't a standard for anything.

That one has always boggled me too. The U.S. is advanced in so many ways, but they insist on clinging to this outdated measurement system, despite the fact that the entire industrialized world, and even thier own scientific community now use metric.

Actually an inch is the exact measurement on a lever when weight doubles.
As for some of our other measurements I'm sure they made sense when they were first adopted. :)
To me metric seems arbitrary although it IS easier when calculating considering it fits with decimal quite a bit better.

It's all about money, specifically, how much it would cost to change to the metric system. A few years ago, I read that just changing the street signs to metric would cost a minimum of US$350 million. For the total cost, they said that it would be astronomical. |

Can someone explain this? I thought it was a measurement of length... I could be wrong though.

by lever do you mean a uniform rod with a pivot and a weight at one end, and when that weight doubles the side on which the weight resides falls by exactly an inch?
With regards to "'Real' English" and "American English", I think they should do what many developers do and have both flags, you know where one corner is the american flag and the other is the union jack?

Actually using a national flag to purely indicate language (and I assume that CCP don't assume that all English speakers are US based, especially seeing as all other languages are banned from the boards) is regarded as a boo-boo when doing localisation. The generally accepted 'correct' method these days is to simply put the name of the language in words.

The difference is usually in the spelling of certain words (color, colour), and also different countries use different words to represent the same object (trunk, boot). Perhaps ccp is just making a point of saying that they use the american spelling and grammar on their site.

I've travelled quite extensively across the US, backpacking and what not. My backpack had a large'ish Union Jack sewn onto the back and trus' me it earned me loads of respect. Americans jus' 'lurv' us Brits, and they can't get enough of that 'English' accent. I collected enough anecdotes to last me a life time. I won't bore you with them, but some Americans (just a few) think London can be reached by train. - straight up.

The girls really dig the UK accent though.....
