I love my kessy and will prolly stick to it till a bc. After like 1 week playing i fitted in
4x 'malkuth' standard missile launcher i 1x small c5-l emergency shield overload 2x small f-s9 regolith shield induction 2x standard PDU (= over 800 shield hp) Don't know if that's a good fitting but with it + some reasonable shielding skills it's possible to do most of lvl 2 kill missions (have to warp out and in few times at some of them though), and kill some of the cruiser-rats (e.g. Sanshas Juggernaut, with a bounty of 72k if you keep max distance) so i think it's just perfect the perfect boat for solo ratting/missions for beginning in case you concentrate on missiles.

I was not considering getting a pay account because of the tremendous lag I have experienced these last couple of days, but today ...well today I finally fitted out my Kestrel =D
Well, to say that this ship convinced me to stay might sound strange to some, but all I had to compare it to was an Ibis, heh. With my Kestrel I rarely get touched because I can keep enemies at range. I love this ship!
Heres my outfit so far:
2x Malktuh Missle Launchers 1x Upgraded Limos Missle Launcher
1x Small Shield Booster 1x Small Shield Extender 1x Cold Gas AB
2x PDU
I'm using Bloodclaw missles and its working great ..so good in fact that I'm tempted to change one of those shield thingies out for something else. I can only fit 3 missle launchers on it so far, with Engineering 3 and Electronics 3 (but they are training). I'm only using it for running missions ...its strange, I thought to begin with I would be a miner, but I'm having too much fun mission running (and it seems to be more profitable, atleast in the short run). Too bad my Charisma is 3 =/
I haven't yet did my learnings because I didn't know if I would be staying beyond the 14 day trial, but now, with my Kestrel (and whatever Kestrels upgrade to) I will be so now I guess I should train up my learning and get that Charisma up eh?

there's a number of really good kessie setups for people with a few more skillpoints as well. one would be: 4x rocket launcher II's, 1mn MWD, 7.5k scrambler, medium shield extender II, 2x mapc
you can also leave off the mwd in favor of a webber, which allows you to either switch out for a pdu or a plate in one of your low slots. you can also just fit a named extender instead of a t2 if your fitting skills are less than perfect. it's a great setup tho for taking out close range ceptors (they fall for it every time). A lot of people don't realise that a kessie can actually out-damage a rocket crow and have just as good of a tank. the only difference is the speed and sig radius.

A Friggie/AF lover, the Kestrel is my favorite ship to date and I've flown all the Amarr and Caldari ones (though Punisher is very close, Retribution is my favorite AF) and the Kestrel is my favorite.
Not sure how this fits with n00b skills, but:
Hi: 4x Rocket Launcher (named preferably)
Mid 1MN Microwarp drive Stasis Webifier or better 7.5km Warp Scrambler
Lo: 2x Ballistic Control Unit
I've taken down numerous frigates, and a couple Intys with that setup. But you have to be fast, the Kestrel is rather fragile. And stay away from Drones. ---------

Edited by: Queen Hades on 13/04/2006 09:00:57 A special setup I love very much for ratting in the Kessie:
4x Limos Rocket launcher (or whatever you can grab)
1x Small Shield Booster II 1x Cold Gas Arcjet 1x Ratspecific passive shield hardener (resistance amplifier)
2x my beloved PDUs
This can tank, for example, the fire of two Sansha Phantasms without any problems while eating them away.
Soon I'll try (with better skills) to mount 4x Rocket Launcher II (better rate of fire while still affordable) and a Medium Shield Booster II.
Btw., the thing I love most about the Kessie is it's design. Reminds me of the "Sartha" - class stealth fighters in Wing Commander II.

I'm sort of flying that loadout right now, but I need Eng 5 to get it all online. Even with a MAPC I have to have 1 module offline due to lack of grid (turn off the warp scram if I'm NPC'ing or one of the rockets or the Civ AB if I'm PvP - depending on the engagement)
Dont drop the 400mm plate though! Without any shield tank this is a lifesaver (and people really dont expect a Kessie to have any/that much armour, once the shield drops and they hit the 'hard bit' you can almost see the confusion/fear set in

I found a more interesting setup recently, after the platenerf.
4x rocket webber MEDIUM SHIELD EXTENDER II (!) small shield booster II MAPC BCS
It actually works too.

EW sucks on it.
It empties your cap in 2 cycles. Fit EW and you die.
You shouldnt need a MAPC to fit an Afterburner and standard launchers or rockets I certainly dont. Never used MAPC yet.
Provided you can close the range to rockets you will beat anything out there frigate sized.
EW doesn't only encompass jamming equipment, think before you post.
Tracking disruptors and target painters work well on this ship.

Solution: don't fight an arty rifter unless you can get him within 10km...

HIGH SLOTS: 4x Malkuth Rocket Launchers (Using mostly Thorns, but depends). MED SLOTS: Monopropelant Afterburner / Warp Scrambler I (7500m) / Stasis Webifier I (10000m) LOW SLOTS: Ballistic Control System I / Nanofiber Internal Structure I
Depending on the situation I either switch between 2 Ballistic or 2 nanofibers on the lows.

Why dont you fit 2*200mm Plates instead of a 400mm+aux? would be cheaper that way imho.

Might struggle with the rest of the fit unless you have adv weapon upgrades for the grid reduction

Seriously, how do you fit a 400mm plate on a Kessie?
I would be 13 MW shy even with Eng 5 and a MAPC?
Now a 200mm plate is no problem with a MAPC.

I am 4.5 PG short for a 400mm plate, but i have only 150k sp atm. So with more skills I guess it's very well possible. With Rocket Launchers, ofc.

A kessie is too slow to effectively use its speed in combat (at least in PvP). Thus, you either have to rely on range or webs to be competitive, generally.

highs 4 t2 standards meds 1 gistii type A - shield booster 1 t2 or balmer weapon disruptor 1 proto or t2 sensor booster lows 1 t2 rcu biggest plate you can fit ( fit your ship from the top down, meaning from highs to lows then insert the plate last )
Here's the deal : This ship is as fast as a slug to start with, so don't worry about speed at all.. I'll tell you how to go sort of fast when you need to later. As we all know, this ship is a hitter, pure damage . With the addition of that gistii booster its now able to withstand a man sized beating, all the while slinging enough damage to kill any inty VERY quickly.
I load the missiles I want to use, then unload them and It allows me to travel at close to 300 m/s.. then when I see my prey I hit the "load all" button and it drops me down to about 60m/s... speed , or lack of it wont hurt you with this setup
Start with positioning for your fight. Because you don't have a scrambler with this set up you need to kill your victims before they can warp out. I like to sit 100km off of a gate or belt in 0.0 so that an inty has to mwd toward me, with the sensor booster your going to lock him at 70km plus. As soon as you have him locked you let all missiles fly, t2 precision and hit em with the weapon disrupter.. with bloodclaw I get 168 to a structure hit, about 120 with the other 3 types.. the idea is that launching at your max range will allow your prey to mwd right into the first volley at close to your missile's max range, that usually puts them into 1/4 to 1/2 armor with the first volley, the second can kill them and no inty lives thru the third... The ONLY way an inty can survive is to bug out after the first volley hits, if he isn't right on with his mwd'ing out of missile range or warping he will pop.. Now if you get surprised and cant use range to your benefit, the the disrupt or and the gistii will allow you to just sit and cycle thru targets as the come in and out of your missile range when taking on 2-3 intys.. Keep your booster running and kill missile boats first and keep the disrupter on the turreted rigs and you'll have more fun than Bill Clinton at a strip club. ( and if you EVEN have to ask why put a 70m mod on a 150k ship then you just don't know what satisfaction is... ) Satisfaction is watching local light up when it gets around that Inty jockeys couldn't kill one lone kessie.. Or the mails from seasond inty jockys that your cheating or using an exploit !! ( your not ) I have not lost to a solo inty yet, and EVERY inty try's to attack me when they see's me sitting off a gate 100km... ( at least the first time, podding them seems to cure them of attacking me EVER again )
Have fun and FLAME on !!
hmmm ... interesting ... I would put a single multispec and 20km scram instead of the booster and disruptor... that way the inty is blind and cannot warp out once he enters 20km range ... and next missiles are going his way already ... ------------------------------ if you want peace, prepare for war ... ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum
I realy liked my signature. Oh well |

Edited by: Zen TseTse on 21/06/2006 14:09:42 NEWBIE FRIENDLY KESTREL SETUPS
One thing i've found in reading all these Kessie threads is that... folks tend to talk about this from a "back in the days" point of view or as if the players coming to such a thread have a million skill points already. These are setups i've actually used in my first 3 days playing Eve, knowing nothing when i first came.
Tips: #1 Stay cheap and conservative. Prepare to lose your ship. #2 The Kestrel is really suited for ranged fighting, so max around that and learn to keep our of close range #3 Find and use "evemon" which can quickly help you look up equipment and skill requirements.
Here are some setups for lvl 1 mission players who have under 80k skills. The required training is mostly implied when not explicitly mentioned. This is purely about Mission Level 1 configs.
Newbie, First Setup :D
- 2 Rockets + 1 Missile - Civilian AfterBurner (jets) - Civilian Shield Booster
This is a very simple, cheap starter-setup for somebody without any real skills but who just went straight for a Kestrel right away.
This assumes you are still learning how to keep your distance. Initially, you dont have to worry about range but you should start learning to keep a nice 14-16k range from opponents to let your missiles do the hard work (instead of rockets). Make the shift to missiles as you get money and some experience with this.
Train up for "Power Diagnostic Systems" when you can (req: Energy Grid Upgrades II, i believe).
Interim Fitting #1 (under 90k skills)
- 3 Standard Missiles I - 1 Limos Rocket - 1 Coldgas Arcjet AB (afterburner/jets) - 1 Small Shield Booster - 2 PDS (Power Diagnostic Systems)
This is a very flexible 'starter' setup which can get you through a lot of level 1 if not all of it. You have a booster, 3 missiles and then rockets in case you are still learning to keep your distance (and you better learn fast).
You will need to do some minor training to get this stuff, but nothing too long. I prefer the Sabertooth missiles because they shred shields so quickly.
Interim Fitting #2 (under 90k skills)
- 3 Malkuth Missile** - 2 Small Shield Extenders - 1 Monopropellant I Hydrazine Boosters (afterburner) - 2 Reactor Control Unit I
** you can use 1 malkuth + 2 standards
This is a beefed up, replicable system without much more in terms of skills. You can plug in slightly more efficient shield and power stuff to garner other options. If you blew a ton more $$$ or have MAPC you can add 4th missile but at lvl 1... it is not needed. This is for those who insist on the nice afterburner capabilities. You can try the Cold gas arcjet AB if you want to make it fit...
I'm fond of passive shield configs cuz i like to not worry about power while fighting. If they rip through all those shields, it's simply time to go... and i can bust out without any concern. You might also save on the Malkuth and sacrifice passive shielding. Depends on how well you keep at range and how much you want to save.
Interim Fitting #3 (under 90k skills)
- 4x Malkuth Missiles (20cpu, 8mw grid each) - 1x Civilian AB (yea, that's right... civ) - 2x Small Subordinate Screen Stabilizer (i.e. extenders) - 2x Reactor Control Unit I
This is my working fitting setup. Strong missile power with nice passive shielding at the cost of speed on AB.
You might not have to use pure Malkuths nor the fancy extenders, but each is better energy/cpu-wise. It makes it a lot more expensive, i realize, but you will need to cut down on cpu/grid usage to make it work. See what fits. :)
The Civ AB gets the 4th weap powered under this passive-shield config, and frankly... it is totally fine since all i use it for is a slight edge on darting lvl 1 mobs as well as getting to loot faster. It's worth it in order to get the 4th missile bay for me, right now.
RCUs are a nice power boost and take a little training, but have been worth it.
