1/10 and 2/10 complexes are a laugh in a Kestrel. I use the following supercheap (<320k, including the ship) setup:
4x standard launchers Shield Booster (2 empty med slots) 2x Ballistic Control
Guristas frigates in low-end complexes (Like the ones in Ekura) die from one bloodclaw with this setup, so the only thing that slows you down is the fact that the Kessie can only have three locks at a time. I tried FoF, but they're easily distracted.
You'll never need the shield booster unless you get some bad aggro, but that's no big deal. If you can bring a friend to draw fire, swap that out for resistance amplifiers or an afterburner.
And bring a friend in a fast ship. You'll have a 30km sphere of loot cans around you, and the Kestrel's too slow to chase them around. A Condor with an afterburner to gather loot and kite cruisers and a Kestrel with this setup can race through entry-level complexes in Caldari space with under two days of training each, although you might need to use a grid boosting engineering mod in a low slot until your Engineering hits level 4, and track down some Malkuth launchers.
Edit: Bring 500 missiles, maybe 1000. You'll only use a couple hundred, but the Kessie's just about hollow (305 cargo space), so there's no reason not to load up.

I have an alt account that I use for support roles to my main. One is a frigate/rocket specialist I use to back me up on missions when I can't get a gang together.
High: 4x rockets Med: AB, webber, target painter Low: BCU, Nanofiber
My main flys a Raven so the painter and webber are for the smaller targets. I usually fly the Kessie 'manually' running intercept vectors on the fast frigates. Then for the larger ships, I orbit at 1000 m and pound away. It's so much fun to see the constant stream of rockets coming out. There's no tank so I have to watch out if she get's aggro.
Plus, I can scoop the loot with this boat and not have to worry/fit a tractor on my Raven thus freeing another high slot. Power of two account ftw.

I am running 4 standard launchers, a sensor booster, shield booster, bcu...and thats bout it short pg and cpu. I attack from good distnace but was curious would a target painter be a good addition? seems like it would help pop inty's. being as thats what I attack (as well as frigates and destroyer) *please let a covert ops ship use a covert ops cloaking device...It just makes sense* *Bombers need baby love too* -Forum Fighter at work; player at night |

I have 3 standard missile launchers and a rocket launcher fitted with defenders. In my mids I put 2 F-RX cap boosters and a decent shield booster. I use cap150's (I have to make these myself) and I keep about 20 or so in the cargo with my bloodclaws. In the low slots its just BCU/PDU/MAPC. I run level 2 missions and can rat in 0.3 without much trouble. ratting in 0.3 is best because you get pirates in intys coming up to you and giving you the web and so on. this guy the other day tried this so I got him down to half armour. he warped off. I carried on ratting and later he came back with a friend, they only took me down because I'd run out of cap chargers. Then he was "25 million to save your pod".I'm "It's like a kestrel, I have no implants, what are you smoking?"

'nuff said. There is no other kestrel setup
It will eat interceptors for breakfast, and if piloted well can shred even the best assault frigates with relative ease.
As a note the AC Claw will shred this setup when competently handled.
Good to know the common Kestrel setups.
Note to self, swap to spike ammo vs Kessy's, 29km optimal on my Enyo, 4.4 Multiplier, hopefully enough to blow the Kestrel before it realizes this is a no good fight.

I love that setup, but you need instas for it. Especially if you use tech2 long range rockets (top speed 80ms/s ftw).
And the unexperienced ceptor pilot will charge right in, get webbed at 7km and by the time he is close enough for his blasters or autocannons, he is half into armor.
One question: Why 2 webbers instead of a shield extender (or something to disrupt targeting perhaps?)

Hmm.
Would it be feasible to setup a Kestrel with a capacitor battery, and a MWD, and just sit outside NOS range at 1.5km a sec, pelting with Standard Missiles instead of Rockets?

I think the Afterburner setup might be better (still would love to hear from some people on MWD options though, since I can run a MWD indefinitely with a Capacitor Battery II.)
Anyhow, my question is, even with the highest level +12MAPC... I'm still 1 powergrid short with Engineering IV. Suggestions anyone? ;)

Am I right in assuming that anything can hit me will melt through a 400mm plate anyway? Also, what about drones? My purpose for using my Kestrel is a cheap throwaway PVP ship... but I want to do what I can to maximize my chances even so. Won't anyone with 1 or 2 drones tear me up?

Requires a few fitting skills at IV, but that's a good idea anyhow:
4x Std Launcher. 1x MWD 1x Small Cap Batt II, 1x sensorbooster (or cap charger if your skills are low) 2x Micro Auxillary Power Core (you need the skill anyway)
Enjoy range control and the 'seat of your pants' flyboy feel of a glass cannon for fun and profit. Perfect for relatively safe supplimentary role in frig gang or fall asleep ratting in highsec.

PVE lvl 1 and 2 mission running with under 1m cost. I do have Electronics, Engineering at 5 and Weapon Upgrades at 4 tho. Key is Medium Shield Extender II - 1268 shield hp Invuln field + civilian afterburner run indefenetly. Wish i could fit normal AB, yet i use it only for can-colection. My current optimal range is 31km, lock range 40 - nothing has this range at lvl 1 and 2 missions. Sit back and kill stuff from afar, and for them "deadspace 10+ frigates at 10km" missions - t2 medium shield extender + invul field lasts untill all of em die anyway.

two cheap and in my opinion fairly balanced setups: - 4x Malkuth Rockets - 1x Med. Azeotropic Extender - 1x Cold-Gas MWD - 1x BCU I - 1x MAPC
Last Mid Slot: - J5 Inhibitor or - Compulsive Multi
the ECM runs forever, while the mwd is turned off.

I would like some opinions on the following two pvp setups:
Setup 1:
Hi: 4 x Standard Missile Launcher
Mid: Mwd, Web, Scram
Low: Nanofiber, BCS
Setup 2:
Hi: 3x Standard missile launcher, nos
Mid: Mwd, Web, Tracking Disruptor
Low: Nanofiber, BCS
Which one would I be best off with? Anything I _have_ to change?

Update: I did try out the first setup against a Scyte. I almost had him, but then a rat spawned and started firing at me also, and that quickly blew my armor and hull.

Seems to me you need a close-range and a long-range.
My close: 4x named rocket launchers AB, shield boost, small extender/20km scram 2x BCU
My long: 4x named standard AB, shield boost, sm extender/20km scram MAPC, BCU
Both work great, and after 14 mos in the game, still my fave ship. Best of all, it's pretty cheap.

My current setup: 4x Malkuth Std Launcher (I don't like rockets... have to get too close) 1 AB, 1 Scram, 1 Web (PVP) 2x Generators (+10 Power ea)
Engineering and Electronics are both at 5... anyone got a suggestion on what skills I should train so that I don't need 2 power boosts to make this setup work? I see tons of people posting the same setup but without the MAPC's.... I have no clue how they're doing it... then again I'm still fairly new and don't have a whole lot of secondary skills in those areas trained very high yet. What should I train to reduce my power needs?

Edited by: Dirrke Undren on 30/09/2006 11:47:35 For a rookie Kestrel I've found viable down to 0.4 space here's an option:
High = 4 x Standard "Limos" Missle Launchers Mid = C5-L Emergency Shield Booster + Small Shield Extender + Target Painter Low = 2 X Power Control Unit
This is a relatively cheap fitting that won't break the bank. I typically take an array of missles relying mostly on Blood Claws with Sabertooths mixed in for knocking out shields.
It is not fast and you may run into trouble in an extended PvP battle, but for me has been very reliable for NPC ratting. But hey I've been doing this only about 3 weeks now.
I have received mixed comments (pro/con) about the addition of the target painter. Any further discussion would be appreciated.

Advanced Weapon Upgrades maybe ? That -2% per level to power needs of turrets and launchers may seem small, but it can do the trick ...

Unless you are trying to help out someone who is using heavy missiles, why do you have the TP? Target Painters with light missiles is pointless, you are already hitting for 100% damage. Even the smallest frigate still has a sig large enough fro a light missile to hit for full damage.
All it is is something else you are gonna lose when that thing goes pop. Just cause you can fill the slot doesn't mean you need to. ------------------------------------- AANI ARCH |

I use the following in PVP frigate gangs.
Hi : 4x standard launchers Mid : 1x afterburner 1x warp distruptor 1x small shield booster Low : 1x MAPC 1x 50MM plate
With cal frig V , moderate missile skills and kinetic missiles you will hit most cruisers from between 80-130 per missile.
If theres enough points in the gang i drop the scram for a BCS in the low. The plate is there simply because i dont have enough PG / CPU to fit ne thing good.
This setup requires high electronics and or high weapons upgrade skill.
