Edited by: Quanteeri on 17/01/2006 20:16:24 I'm just curious. When this was first introduced, I thought it was really cool, but since have had a hard time finding a practical implementation for it.
I don't really need it in combat, as things happen too fast and distances can be gotten from the actual Overview listing.
I don't really need it for non combat, as thing move too slowly to actually need it.
So does anyone actively use it? How do you benefit from it?

Are you talking about the tactical display?
If so, yes I use is in asteriod fields during battle. _________ roflfest 2006 - be there

as the game has evolved i dont see how it can be played without the overview and its advanced settings. it makes it faster to lock targets, to identify enemy ships and ship types. overview = win ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yes, the tactical layout, my apologies. I'll change that in the topic.

Tactical Overview + Covert ops = accurate reporting of distance. Therefore = win
Its pretty useless for anything else though -----

Essential in missions where you need to pick out individual groups of rats and their distance.
hard to do without a graphical representation of range. ---------------------------------------- Friends Forever |

Only when flying long range ships. For short range it's pretty darn useless. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I used it until Seleene told me that it ruined fraps :/ Tactical Overlay is really good for spotting i what direction people warp away.

good for pinpointing cloaking ships, select the ship and there will be a line in the layout pointing to where he cloaked :)

It's also very helpful in positioning POS guns so they line up nicely :)

Useful for: -Smarbombing of missiles or multiple targets -Accurate estimation of distance (for every case where distance matters) -Accurate estimation of where people warp away to or come from -Instant target aquisition (no more looking around the edges of the screen to see where your target is relatively to you)
Im handicapped without it, and if they remove it or break it I'll cry. For real.

Ah, now this I have used it for.
I also see where it could be quite helpful in determining your relative and target angles. Such as what course your opponent has set for approach or vice-versa, if like me, you have a hard time figuring out how to use the radial and trans velocity readings to your advantage.

Don't worry, I'm not pushing to get it removed just because I don't know how to use it. Which'll probably be a first here.

Its also useful for setting up bookmarks in a field while mining. You can use it to get the angle of approach right for the warpin...and quickly find a random object or roid to use for those wacky 30km+ warpin bookmarks. often you need an object on the far side of the field to get the angle right...

I use it when collecting loot cans to try and pick a best path for lewtz gathering.
Btw, I think that's an NP hard problem.

i have it on whenever i'm using my covops, accidentally getting decloaked when near hostiles is a pain :P
for everything else i just use the overview sorted by distance --------------------------- My opinions are my own and not nessecarily those of my corp or alliance.

sounds like a tool to me... all it dos is to pointout where the ops cloaked... now where he is... ____________ The cargo bay is overloaded and cannot be made to fit Expanded Cargohold I. It is currently only capable of fitting 8772.12 units and it is currently jammed full with 9558.33 units. |

The response I had from a GM was that it is an exploit, and that I should file a bug report. However by all means make an enquiry - if you get a contradictory response then clearly it's a matter to raise with a senior GM. -- We are recruiting

it was in patch notes at one point afaik :S
all it shows is where they cloaked.. not where they are going or whatever.. so i seriously doubt it is an exploit ;\
Especially when you can almost do it manually

I use the Tactical Overlay when I fly Interceptors alot so I know when to target people.
As Im going 4km/s I can't rely on the overview to know how close I am, and I almost always try for a faster lock with ctrl + click on target.
The Tactical overlay is nice in this respect, but yes for most other ships I don't need it For God, Empire, and Sarum! |

Another use for the overlay is if you are scouting out potential targets in a Covert Ops and they warp away before you get into position. If you click on their ship before they warp out, the line of the overlay will stay on them, so you can see which celestial object they warped to.

I use it when a cov ops comes thru gate. shows cov ops last position before cloak and if he isnt quick it gives me a chance to decloak him
