Originally by: M3ta7h3ad your missing the fact that he's admitted he is concentrating on learning skills, and advanced learning. He will have about half a mill in combat skills, he'll barely be optimally trained for his ferox, only reason he is kicking ass in level 2's is because a ferox is overpowered for them, and its why he is finding level 3's difficult (assumption on my part), and I suggest why he is asking about battleships, when a ferox with decent skills can cope with a level 3.
He could get a battleship... pwn level 3's, but its boring as hell going in something overrated for the task, and he's looking for fun.
You should read more carefully. He said that he will focuse on learning skills from now on, to get them all at level 5 and then advanced at 4 (which means he currently doesn't have the basic ones at 5 ). Furthermore, I don't know where you read he was doing level 2s and had troubles with level 4: his Ferox handles all level 3 missions, as he said, and he's making 60-80M a weak doing them. Sure, his damage output is not terrific, and it takes some time to do the missions, but he has no trouble.
edit: doh, should not take so much time to answer next time ===== !!! Fix SB - Love for AFs - Fix drones AI !!! |

Originally by: inSpirAcy Well as I say, if L3 is that easy (which I don't believe it is; it still takes me a couple hours to clear and loot an Extravaganza in a Ferox ) I'll move to L4.
Missions are somewhat monotonous no matter what level you do them at. But for me, it's the most effective way to generate cash in the short term. So I'm just looking for something less boring than missiles to do them with, in a ship that doesn't look like it was built from Lego by the engineer's kids.
:o!!! The ferox is a sexy ship! :D lol like a cormorant! one of the best looking ships in the game.
Admittedly the raven looks like a wierd meccano accident but then again the typhoon doesnt look much better :D
See for me fun = taking a ship lower than the rated difficulty into a mission and then pwning everything :) may take me 4 hours or something but thats a serious game then :D need to plan tanking, ab, firing :D all fun! :D But it tiz your choice afterall :) ----- Memorable Quotes <Jarltan Dimtras> OH MY GOD MY GF IS A DUDE |

Yea, I think that's where we were going wrong.
I'd enjoy flying a battleship of doom into the middle of a huge aggro, tanking silly amounts of damage and dealing silly amounts back! I can certainly see the fun (and the challenge) in using smaller ships for the job, but making money is still a priority for me. Dealing damage quickly comes first.
Cheers for all the suggestions in this thread, by the way!

Ok, Say 1.5 or 2mil SP Then. It CERTAINLY Doesn't take a year. I can be positive of that. Even with training learning skills.

I can fly all battleships and, hands down, the dominix is the funniest of all - so many options, especially with all the new drone stuff.
About not getting in BS before you have 4738748337328824 sp: bullsh*t, I remember everyone telling me that when I was a noob yet I was happily whoring lvl3 missions in my armageddon with medium lasers (didnt even have gunnery 5), large repper and medium drones - only makes it easier than in a battlecruiser so you get money faster.
Same goes for pvp tbh, skill wont make that much of a difference as long as you can use your brain...

Dissagree with the first statement. The faster you get into a BS that can handle higher level missions, the better. Then you'll have more money to spend on skills, ships and equipment. If you like lasers, why not one of the Amarr BS?
Exactly, a fully fitted tempest with a civilian shield booster and small autocannons owns!

The most fun, is the battleship you don't lose. The drive to obtain a battleship is strong in the new player. You want to get into that big ship, and lay waste. However, you may have the skills to fly the ship, but that is just fulfilling the requirements. It takes a while for the pilot of the battleship to learn the feel of the ship, and what it is capable of.
My advise is to go ahead and get into the battleship, but play it safe. Stay out of low sec space with it for at least a month, to give yourself the chance to use it on Level-3 missions, until you skills fill out.
You then will have truely "trained" to use a battleship.

About the ppl saying that flying BS at 1m sp is bad, i started doing L4 missions after 3 weeks odd, was in my raven and earning serious cash, yeah i lost one, but i also made a billion in under 3 months and had alot of ships/mods making that 1.5bill, its hard but worth it imo. Also the most fun battleship to fly, well i do love my armageddon, something nice about pounding away with tonns of lasers. But if u want some real action train up Frigate L5 and fly T2 frigs and pirate YARR!

Though once I get minnie bs 5 for Vindicator action I'll probably spec up for t2 AC and mess with Auto-pest/mach, they look pretty fun too.

4.5mill SP here (2.5 learning) and ive just trained gall BS 2, still have yet to decide whether to jump in one though. If i did it would be the domi (600k drones/300k gunnery ) but for lv3's i might as well stick with speed+fun not tank/boredom.

Originally by: AstroPhobic I have to severely disagree with those that say Wait until you have x amount of SP. If I wasn't training for Assault Frigates at the moment, I could easily have a BS WELL fitted at 1mil SP. Including all of those side skills, advanced weapon upgrades, etc. You guys are accounting for noobness in skill training at the beginning of all of our accounts. Some people don't have that.
And On my first character, I could fly my HAC fitted with all T2 Equip before a year of playing.
som people havent played this game and havent learned to do all learning like u may have done so having more then one char to work with is awesome
But then again this isnt my first Character.
Typhoon, IMO, was great fun. Truly the only BS I have ever flown.

I truely love flying typhoons. They're such an under-rated ship than no-one takes you serously when your flying one. tbh though, I tend to have a nice laugh with my armour tank and dual 650mm autocannons :D ---------- "EvE isn't a game, it's a lifestyle" Jaegerknack, 5punkorp

Originally by: inSpirAcy Edited by: inSpirAcy on 22/01/2006 13:57:07 I'm really intrigued by this worry about using a BS with low SP, so let's dig further.
With my 1 mil SP, my Ferox can take on any level 3 mission without problems. It's not particularly fast, sure; but it's doable, and she can tank all the damage given out. Now let's assume I'm not actually flying a BS for another... three months? So I'll have a bit more SP by then.
What's the difference between a Ferox and a Raven, a few skill requirements aside? I could pack in larger equivalents of the tank modules, so maybe a couple levels to support. I get exactly the same DPS with more tank. How am I now more likely to lose a Raven than a Ferox?
Money worries aside (there aren't any; I can lose 200 mil happily and make it back quickly), I don't see any problem. This is a Caldari BS, sure; so I'll be spending some time training up armor tanking skills, and then more to train up different weapons. That's what the two months after learning skills are for. Now where exactly is this SP problem? Ye, if I went for something like a Typhoon, I'd expect to have godawful DPS for a while. I don't mind, as long as the tank holds.
To decently fly a bs you're going to need:
Engineering 5 Electronics 5 _______ Once you start playing around with full racks of guns and full tanks pg and cpu vanish. Try fitting a raven with siege launchers, anti frig guns/nos, XLarge 2 booster tank and damage mods. BS setups, except in the case of very specilized single purpose setups should NOT need an RCU of CPU mod to fit. The general exception are PDS on caldari ships which are good since they strengthen the tank. _______
Energy Systems Operation 4 Energy Systems Management 4 _______ For pretty much everyone but caldari you should be able to run a full tank (2 repairers) + most or all of your guns. Being unable to run a full tank period = very bad. _______
Tanking skills (depends on the ship but 3 skill at level 4 either way)
Gunnery 5 (or missile launcher 5) Assorted gunnery skills 4 (either the utility missile skills or the range, tracking and falloff for turrets) Weapon upgrades 3
Drone skills -- ideally a full rack of medium drones (so drone operation 5, scout drone 3-4, and maybe the ultility drone skills but drone interface 3 offsets the need to train those up) you'll need these to pick frigates off your bs.
That's a general idea of what skills are useful to climb into a bs.
Right off the bat, engineering 5, Electronics 5 and Gunnery/Missile launcher operation 5 is 750,000+ sp. And that's JUST to fit bs guns on your ship.
Now, running level 4 missions is a whole new ballgame.
You're going to need generally higher skills mainly in gunnery.
1) Expect to fight GROUPS of bses supported multiple sentry guns and cruisers/frigs.
2) Expect to be scrambled.
3) Encountering enough damage to destroy your ship in the time between you fully exit warp and get close to align out isn't unheard of (happened a few times to me)
4) Damage types, your guns, your skills and you.

In short:
Shortrange 4tw for BSes.
Risk of death is high. Fun factor is much, much higher.
As long as your not jammed, or your enemy isnt explicitly tanked EM/Thermal (get your skills up and even if they are they still die), Armageddon 4tw. I lub mine, i lose a lot but kill a whole lot more. Its limited in what it can do due to the fact that its CPU sucks and its only got 3 medslots, but omg, the firepower, the explosions.../drool
You need high skills though, aim for all gunnery incl Large Energy Turret IV, Amarr BS IV, and max your cap skills as no cap = no shooty.
Tempest and Domi are more versatile thanks to the larger number of medslots while still packing a punch. Its all down to your playstyle, really.

Tempest is, imo the best battleship ingame. You have the widest variety of options fitting-wise. tank/gank/ew/snipe/close-range...it can do it all!

quoted for truth.
I've just outgrown my clone at 1.5 mil SP and im just about to move into lvl 4 mission in my tempest, jsut waiting a few days for better tanking skills.
Even if you put medium guns on a BS like i did at first on my phoon, theres no reason why you shouldn't. Makes fitting a damn sight easier and gives you more cargo for loot.
Just because i can't uber-max out every aspect on my ship doesn't mean i shouldn't fly it. Considering most of the skills you need to make a BS worht flying like engineering and electronics are level 1 skills, and msot of the tank skills are lvl 1 or 2, you can happily use all the t2 tank gear inside a month, and everything else is down to taste. SP really don't mean anything. quote]
HELLSTEETH! 1.5million SP for a tempest and you want to lvl4 i have 14+million SP 8million of them in guns and my tempest still cannot do a lot of the lvl4's with out help!!
i run 1400mm t2 guns 6 of them and a very good tank. two tracking computer2 as well and still lvl 4 is a pain in the Ar*e

don't listen to anybody...if you have BS lvl 2 and torpedo lvl 1 it's already a good start now work on your shield, shield hardners....there u go a Raven is good for u...
I mean look I have 15 mil skill points, can use tech II 1400 howies on my tempest and still got podded by 3 interceptors and a zealot camper in HED-GP the other day. So skill points don't matter if you can afford it and wanna have fun than go for Raven

Raven= Most boring. missiles arent fun. Scorpion= Crap in PvE. EW vs rats is funny though. Makes them fly in a straight line. Dominix= Used to be fun launching mad numbers of drones, boring now. Megathron= Boring. Apoc/Geddon= Lasers make cool noises, and look nice. And if you get bored of the colour, you can switch crystals! Tempest= BIG noises, BIG wrecking shots, most fun imo :P Typhoon= Doesnt qualify as a real BS. Get an Ibis.
