Originally by: Rells Now there is an announcement that I would love to see. I have been plazing with my new XBox360 and it is a great piece of hardware. After attenting Game Developer's Conference in Europw this year, I had the pleasure of talking to one of the senior people in charge of the 360 and he enlightened me that it is a DirectX based platform. I could only think that it could not be that tough to cross compile the game to the 360 from the PC.
Naturally the game would require the 360 with the hard drive for client patches. Perhaps even 360 subcribers could order a new DVD, or perhaps download a burnable image, with the full build of the game at periodic intervals. Personally I think the ability to order that CD would be good for the PC platform people as well.
In addition, the game UI would have to be converted for the 360. This wouldnt affect the PC interface but would be specifically for the 360 version of the game. There are certainly enough buttons on the 360 to manage this. In addition, for chatting the user can connect a keyboard to 360 or use a built in voice over IP solution with a headset that connects to voice servers. Integration of VOIP into Eve would be a great thing anyway.
I know there will be some flamers and malcontents that will make silly statements about maturity of XBox360 owners. All of that is rubbish of course. In every community there are idiots; the PC Unreal and Counterstrike communities are beyond description for immaturity whereas some of the communities on the Xbox360 are great fun. People make such statements simply out of bias, desire to flame and malcontent tendenceies. Those that plaz Eve on the 360 will have to deal with the math and the other intellectual facets of Eve which will keep the vast majority of the immature players playing something else.
The potential for CCP would also be huge. It would be only the second MMOG on a console and the console audience is just plain HUGE. There are hundreds of thousands of potential customers out there. In addition, the advertising for the PC version of Eve would be great. Its just a win-win situation for Eve. For the cost of hiuring a couple XBox programmers and porting the game they get a new market!
Finally, since XBox programmers would have to be found anew, this would have minimal, if any, impact on the features of the game for the PC players. I know that there will still be some selfish players that will demand all dev resources on their pet peves but the rational people in the forum would have to agree that this would be an excellent move for CCP with FAR FAR more potential revenue than porting Eve to Mac or Linux.
This would be cool. And CCP could hire the guys at SOE to redesign eve like they did SWG for the consols!
