Gotta admit I dont mind the timer although I consider it a bit carebearish and lame. But yes put it somewhere inoffensive like in a screen corner so i don't have to look at it. And those popups need to be removed asap. Theyre annoying as hell, serve little useful purpose once the first one has popped itself up. Bah!

somehow i doubt it...
you could probably modify some of the python in the client to stop it, but i think that is quite heavily against the EULA
part of the reason for this thread is to disable an easier way - making whoever put it in take it out again over today's DT

Agreed.
Put it somewhere else if you have to have it but I for 1 have never lost a ship cos the first 4 pop ups did not give me enough warning.

We started to use a new way of starting and stopping TQ at downtime 2 days ago. The countdown timer is a feature of the new managment scrips. I've read your complaints on this.
To move the countdown timer in the UI, we'd need a client patch. It can not be turned off unless we stop using the new scripts, and thats not an option, as they are required for TQ to start up on Windows 2003. I'll look into getting a hotfix to decrease the number of popups though. ------ Valar Quality assurance department CCP games How to write a good bugreport |

@Valar: Techie point of view: New stuff on new servers? Great! Pilot point of view: Did the ccp QA department not test this new feature? It is at a really important place on the screen. It overwrites vital messages.
Btw. the timer jumped a minute ...
For countdown timer racing: I usually looked at the clock in the lower lefthand side to get an idea when the server goes down. It's been at 11:01 in the past. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

The count down timer isn't anywhere near as bad as the popups "We'll be closing server soon, get out of harms way". Nor as bad as the reintroduced (and stupid) feature of a popup saying you're not close enough to gate (had that one before, and it caused a lot of people to get ganked by gate camps. Now it just says "Args(o) 'Ignore on top'" or something)

I like the timer, although I can sympathise with the posts about the place where they show up. A timer like the agression timer in the top left would be better. But i'm sure people can live with it until the next client patch.
But now that you have the timer, can you disable the popups as they are not needed anymore.

One popup at 60mins, one popup at 15 mins, one popup at 5 mins, one popup at the point when the server ACTUALLY shuts down. All that is necessary :D -- bumcheekcity

Are you saying that's it then? We're stuck with the counter in the middle of our screen? It's not only in the way and immovable but talk about ruining our immersion. We're not idiots. We don't need so many bloody reminders.
For such a great game, there are some stupid ideas implemented.

i would rather deal with lag than that darn timer, and i think your script is broke, because im still getting unable to connect on my client

Just make the popups and the on-screen countdown optional, and I don't care how many or how big they are ('cause they'd be shut off).

It would be nice if the messages appeared on the far left side instead.
Why have it in the middle of the screen? Its just a neusance anyhow.

Think u need to have a look at that script as for the last two days i have been able to enter the game after dt try to undock and get stuck both times, after that it's impossible to log back on as u get stuck on "entering game" so something is defenatly wrong with it.

The timer was taken out because with the new scripts the server doesn't allow people on till its ready anyway. The problem is still that even if the cluster is ready, its still preloading solarsystems, so the pressure on the database server is intense. This was however not the cause for the 30-40 minutes of lag today.
We are watching every startup and coming up with ways to prevent this from happening in the future ------ Valar Quality assurance department CCP games How to write a good bugreport |

I like the countdown timer to downtime, although as others said, moving it towards the edge of the screen might make it less "in the way".
Another idea might be to make the clock down in the corner flash (or glow, or somehow get your attention) during the pre-downtime when the timer comes up now.
I like the new timer though, just needs to be pushed up to the top edge of the screen a bit.
Fewer popups are always good though, thanks! :)
