Is this supposed to happen?
It's kinda annoying, especially as my computer starts beeping at me every now and again if I leave EVE opened (instead of minimized where its fine) for a long time, which I am assuming is it complaining that the CPU is under a silly amount of stress.
So.. if this isn't supposed to happen, is there any way to reduce the usage?
CPU: Athlon 64 3500+
Was fine till RMR...

Doesn't every game in existence put your CPU to 100% usage?
If its beeping, that would mean that your cooling isn't good enough to handle your CPU. -- Proud member of the [23].

No, most games don't use anywhere near 100% of the CPU that's available to them. They all have to wait on real-time events such as mouse movement, network packets, disk I/O, or simply a "reasonable" delay for NPC actions. :)
However, if your machine is beeping, and if it only does it with the game opened, I would suggest it's overheating, probably caused by your video card (which will work harder and generate more heat when rendering things).
I would check the video card's fan, and also make sure you don't have cables that block the airflow when things are assembled.
Vila Restal: I'm entitled to my opinion. Kerr Avon: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating.

EVE uses whatever CPU it can find on my system. I can run a single instance and it uses 100% CPU. I can run two, and they use 50% each. Roughly. If I load other stuff alongside they just work around it. I can run single instances of EVE and EQ2 together with no trouble.
As far as I know this isn't a problem. |

I can run HL2 and other stuff fine. The main problem is EVE making my CPU constantly max out.. I don't know that much about them but I know that thats not really a good thing. The overheating problem could be there, but the last time I had overheating problems (which went away..) the computer locked up, rather than beeping randomly.
I will plug my second fan back in tomorrow and see if the beeping stops.

I run a 3.4 gig Pentium 4 with a dirty great big fan in the case. I can run HL2 etc etc and the fan (and presumably the CPU) barely break a sweat. it's the same with everything i run till i fire up EVE. Then the the thing sounds like it's taxiing across a runway for take off. I think I'm gonna need to wedge it with bricks to stop it moving round the room. As soon as I bring up IE, or an excel sheet on top of it though it drops right down. It's 100% flat out ALL of the time in with EVE on top, even if I'm just sat in station.

EVE is definitely much more CPU intensive than games like HL2. Its probably because it engages more parts of the CPU at once--in my experience my computer will crash during EVE when it can encode videos and play UT2004 just fine.
If all else fails, underclock your CPU. But an A64 3500+ should run pretty cool and run EVE just fine unless your cooling is horrible. -- Proud member of the [23].

That processor is not one that AMD lovers like to build their own systems around. So is it a prebuilt comp? If so..find out what videocard you have. And HOPE you dont have some integrated video motherboard. The main reason a cpu is running at full speed cause it trying to make up for video graphics inadequecy(sp) Or maybe even SLow ram. I didnt say NOT ENOUGH RAM....just SLOW ram. IE timings. Check those and you might find a problem and a solution.

What are you talking about?
EVE is not very video card dependant at all--unless you have a card slower than an FX5200 your system will be CPU-bottlenecked when playing EVE. That's why having a top end A64 is more important than having fancy SLId videocards when playing EVE. -- Proud member of the [23].

Any application is using as much CPU as it can get, as long as it isn't waiting / doesn't have to wait for something. It's normal.
E.g. if you play with v-sync on, then the application doesn't draw the scene repeatedly as fast as it can to the framebuffer, but waits after drawing one picture, until the framebuffer is displayed on the screen and the next picture can be drawn to 2nd buffer. This might lead to a CPU usage to a lower CPU usuage. With v-sync off the application usually draws full-speed without waiting, which might lead to a higher cpu usage.
It isn't just about the graphics. If the application has to wait for something, it 'gives' the CPU back to the system and if there isn't another application running that wants the CPU, the system goes idle. So as long as there is something to do, the applications will use as much CPU as they can get. Totally normal and a maching should work without problem under this condition.
P.S.: Sorry, if it was too technical. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |

i have a 3.4 pent4, 2 gigs ram, radeon mobility 9700
i usually run eve in a wide window...whatever the res is called. when i click in the area of the window, my temps are around 63c. if i click outside that window on my desktop, the temps go down to 54c or less.
i can still watch the action, the graphics are being rendered, i am flying through space, etc. wtf and why should that happen....could this be related to eve flopping around in my proc when it really doesnt need to?
seems a little odd

Here is an interesting thing about eve cpu usage that is very strange. I use a dual core system (amd x2 3800+) and run 2 clients on 2 screens. I have each client assigned to it's own core. I have both running rendering frames as each show on its screen.
BUT when I have one client active (as in last clicked in that window) the cpu usage of the core the other client is assigned to goes down to around 30-40% and fps for that window drop around 30%.

Sounds like you need better cooling, especially if your using the stock heatsink that came with your CPU/PC.
This worked great on my 3800+ (until I switched to watercooling) and my prescot http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109118.
Combine that with a 30-50 cfm low noise 120mm fan, and you'll have plenty of cooling with very little noise.

EVE will always use 100% of CPU when it's the active application, even if you use the taskmanager to set it's priority to Low (as I often do).

All games that have a continual refresh of the screen without a framerate cap (thus nearly all 3D games) will max out your CPU.
You're right. most games still run on a main rendering loop. However, most of them have the number of loops per second restricted to the same as your monitor's refresh rate in order to reduce wastage of CPU usage. Eve happens not to make much use of graphics cards but instead uses a lot of CPU. I think eve doesn't restrict the number of loops per second executed because people report frame rates in excess of 100 with monitor refresh rates of 60-75Hz. So either Eve just uses 100% of the CPU it can get a hold of by running on a continual loop or there's an option to enable sync with the refresh rate and most people have it off.
Either way, the OP needs to get his CPU cooling sorted out as it overheats at 100%, regardless of whether or not you think eve should run it at 100%.

Edited by: Eternal Fury on 15/02/2006 02:49:19 If there is an issue with Creative drivers and eve, then the two companies need to get together and fix it. I know that the AC97 codec is probobly the most common sound driver, but creative is one of the most prevalent sound cards out there.
if the game runs bad with the sound on, you guys need to send an email/petittion to CCP and let them know this.
My self, If I can't play a game with sound, I won't play it. Sound tells you a LOT about the game. Hense why it's there.
Try watching TV with subtitles on and the sound off. You miss a lot of the show because you spend too much time focusing on the text.
As for CPU usage, i've yet to see a game that is the ACTIVE game, meaning it's the currently running program and not running in the background, that idn't use 100% of the CPU, or what ever was left.
The program that is currently running, the main one, will use as much of the CPU as it wants. So if it's Eve, Eve will use all it wants. Unless a background app is useing some cycles. It's the nature of computers.
To the OP, if your computer is beeping at you, and you notice your fans are running harder when the game is going, check the cooling. you REALLY REALLY should plug that "noisy" fan back in. It was put there for a reason. It'd be like removeing the Rad on your car becuase you hated filling it. They are both put there for a reason.
Beeping is usually a sign that something is overheating. Most likely it's your CPU, and the beeping is your motherboard telling you that it's going into the danger zone. - - - - Q: Can I change skills without logging in or Que skills? A: no. to both. End of story.

Not a problem for me. It reaches 100% of course; most games use a lot of CPU and Eve is very CPU-bound. But it works perfectly, and if I alt-tab and run something else, there is no noticeable slowdown.
On my laptop, Eve doesn't even use up 100% CPU. Yay for dual core centrinos! :-) -------------------- This solution to BM-related server resource usage can reduce lag with the same interface. |

I have a P4 550 that runs at 3.4Ghz with a radeon X800XT and while I can't comment on my CPU usage (I've never checked and I'm lazy), I CAN comment on the fact that if I run EVE on fullscreen, my computer rapidly overheats and crashes. I don't have any specific temperatures for fullscreen, but when I run EVE windowed (no sound, turret effects off) CPU temperatures are reported to rise from around 40C to 80C+. I'm not sure of the desired temps for a P4, but.. that seems a little high?
I do have the stock fan, but after a great deal of research it appears that I'd have to spend upwards of ú50 in order to get one with significant improvement and that impinges on beer money.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that suffers from EVE overheating; I've never experienced it on other games, e.g. HL2, F.E.A.R. etc. I don't lonely anymore...

Meh. It doesn't stop EVE from being teh rox0rs.

I run a second account on eve on a 3 yr old computer. Spec is xp 1700 768mb 266 ddr memory and an old ge force 2 64mb graphics card and a shared broadband connection with my other character. The graphics cards fan packed in about 6 months ago yet everything runs just fine. i run it full windowed and it will run all day and night np. I have always built my own pc,s since the pentium 100. Message here is: 'if you want a good build'...ask me:)

BUT when I have one client active (as in last clicked in that window) the cpu usage of the core the other client is assigned to goes down to around 30-40% and fps for that window drop around 30%.
That's because EVE uses less CPU when not the active window, as do all windows programs IIRC.
Yes but it is also apperent that EVE can got good fps (I still hve 40-50 fps when the window is not active) with low cpu usage IF they wanted to make the game as such. Maybe include a max fps option you can set for those that have heat problems (and no I don't consider the present interval options as useful for this.).

You people act like it's a bad thing to have your CPU running at 100%. It's not going to get tired... It is designed to run at 100% efficiency at all times. When it's not being run at 100% then the system sendles idle bits (Trash data) through it to keep it occupied.
Under heavy load the CPU's temperature might increase a few degrees, but that's the only real danger. If you have a halfway decent heatsink and haven't carpeted the inside of your case, (You laugh, but I've seen it!) then you're fine.

Indeed you should be able to run your whole box (CPU/RAM/GPU/HD) at full tilt 24/7 with out over heating.
It might be beeping cause you are taxing the powersupply. Check what alarms you have set in your BIOS. The "wattage" listed on you powersupply is basicly meaning less. If you don't know what to look for amperage wise in a powersupply the best next thing to look for is wieght. You should easily be able to turn some ones head inside out with it.
If you dont have any thing overclocked or exotic you should be able to run with three fans. CPU, GPU, and power supply.
I'm running a 2.6 gHz P4 clocked at 3 gHz with the RETAIL cooler that came in the box with it... if your CPU cooling looks cool it proably sucks. I've also had quite a few boxes come across my bench lately with over heating problems because the heatsink lifts off the cpu just a hair when the case is upright. This cause the damn things are too tall and heavy.
733t looking 100% copper CPU cooler ... $90 Labor to replace it with something that works... $89 Cheap ass aluminum cooler from Taiwan... $15 Seeing the look on the customers face... priceless

EVE didn't use to sit at 100% usage all the time like it does now. In my case it hits solid 100% usage pretty quick, usually after it eats up most of my ram.
I think the ram usage is the real problem right now. After eve eats up most, or all, of your ram it then consumes everything and your comp just starts eating ****.

I've played Eve on my 2.4GHz 1GB RAM machine and it's pegged to 100% as well.
I've played Eve on a Duel 2.4GHz Xeon w/2GB of RAM poweredge server and it proced the processor to 100%. Eve assumes all CPU that's available. If something else needs it, it will provide it but if it's not being used, Eve sucks it up for it's own resources.
I guess it's the way the game was made.
There are a few applications on the web that won't allow a single application to take all of the available processor. I know I used EQPlayNice when I was playing EverQuest.
