The moment that all of us have been waiting for, the long awaited Hardware Upgrade is upon us. On Tuesday, 21 February starting at 0800 GMT, the old Tranquility hardware is replaced with 70 new IBM 64-bit AMD dual processor blade servers. This upgrade is expected to be a long and difficult process, so the normal maintenance period will be extended to 24 hours. However, the end result will greatly improve the Eve gaming experience.
We are recommending the training of long duration skills in case the upgrade takes longer than the expected period of time.

I doubt they will do the patch at the same time. Way too many things to go wrong. :) This is just the hardware upgrade, with the patch to follow after things are mostly stable I'm guessing. -- Lil Miner |

We are targeting deployment of the Bloodlines patch on 28 February. Patch Notes will be available later next week after the Hardware upgrade.
Since this is a hardware upgrade, there is no need for a client-side patch, nor any changes to the Eve server code that will require patch notes. The 'old' stuff will be used by CCP, so you can't have it.
By recommending a long skill, I mean something that won't complete training on Wednesday at 0800 when we are estimating a return to service. Give it a day or three longer than that just to be sure.

Wow, ..I cant't wait til teh upgrade goes live. If I remember correctly this new "cluster" makes EVE's hardware one of the TOP 500 supercomputers in the.
I am curious about the client side working on Dual CPU processors. I read about the patch for "balancing" with the EVE server cluster. Can anyopne elaborate a little bit on client side theoretical performance if running a Dual CPU. e.g. AMD X2.
Is it safe to assume that they client will be "more" in sync with the server since it runs 64 bit as well?
I would appreceate it if someone from CCP could elaborate on this.
yes...we are all "hardware junkie..z"

Oveur mentioned in a previous forum post (I can't find it right now) that the old hamsters would be retired to a cozy nest, watch gladiator movies all day and be used as an escort service from time to time.
In any case, they have served us long and faithfully. I think they deserve better than to be sacrificed.

Nuthing. This is client side patch for people experiencing problems with Dual core processors. To make EvE run properly it load balances between both cores, instead of maxing 1 Processor. P.S. If windows detects you have more than 1 Processor (core) dont worry about it.

Nope. No 64bit client as yet. Hopefully this will change. But all data is transfered to & from server in simple coding anyway. No 64bit transfers in networks yet.
Anyways... Good luck on the hardware upgrades guys!!
Not noticed much lag where I am. Just hope you fix the client a bit.

The client on SISI has some pretty major changes that allow it to have 32/64 clients. Its mentioned somewhere in the testing section. Expect a native 64 client on or slightly after, only makes sense since theyre shifting the server codebase to 64 as well. ------------- Please fix the stacking algorythm, it's a disgrace!

I'm a computer idiot. And fairly proud of it. So please consider that in this question . . .
Is this set up something that is very cutting edge? If so, is IBM, or any other company(ies), following it closely in order to see how things go?
Just curious.

One of the initial blogs on the Yarrrrdware had made comment that the target was to break onto the top 100 list for the fastest computers on Earth.
Any projections on the sure computing power or how close this new system will be?

J'inn, yes the hardware we are installing is very cutting edge and IBM is *very* interested in how things turn out. The same with Texas Memory Systems, the company that provided us with the solid-state memory system.
Ominus, it is the Top 500 that we are shooting for. It would take a lot more equipment than what we are installing to make it to the Top 100 list.

I have killed millions of people, and still they attack me. I butcher them in the millions and still they wont stop comeing. Never has a pirate said "hey you have killed a million of us would a deal be out of the question?"
Never do they retreat or make tactical withdrawals.
How many patches and upgrades and how many years must pass before the pirates start showing an ounce of intelligence and self preservation?
Also I was reading the story Crielere
http://www.eve-online.com/races/crielere/
And I was wondering if an event or 4 could be made that a station is built somewhere step by step by Faction and player founding and by Faction and player logistical support ie players and Factions transport materieals to build the Station and ofcurse these convoys would be able to be attacked and require protection and so on and so forth.

Looking forward to the new hardware!

After 24 hours of painstaking installation and hard work, the CCP tech guys finally reach the moment we all have been waiting for...
CCP Tech 1: *phew* its finally done. I've checked everything and everything checks out. Time to turn the thing on and see if it works. CCP Techs: *much cheering* CCP Tech 1: Here goes nothing! *throws rediculously huge elecrical switch* . . . . *nothing happens* CCP Tech 2: Umm, shouldn't it have turned on by now? CCP Tech 1: Shut up Leeroy, obviously you screwed it up. Knowing you you put "tab a" into "slot b" again. CCP Tech 2: But I did everything you told me...Oh here's the problem its... CCP Tech 1: Just shut up! I'll check it again. *24 hours passes* CCP Tech 1: Argh! I've gone over my list three times already! I just don't understand it. CCP Tech 2: But I've been trying to tell you... CCP Tech 1: Just just up Mr. Jenkins, I'm so angry I could cry.... CCP Tech 2: *sigh* *Leeroy walks over to the power cord and plugs the machine into the wall* CCP Tech 2: C'mon boss, just try it one more time. CCP Tech 1: Fine, I don't see what good it will do... *throws rediculously large electrical switch again* *as the whole continent of Icland dims under the strain, the machines whir to life* CCP Tech 1: ITS ALIVE!! ITS ALIVE!!! I HAVE DONE IT!!! See Jenkins, all it takes is hard work and following my flawless instructions... My little joke about mutant hamsters on steroids aside...
Will this new server cluster be expandable?
As more and more people join up with EVE can extra blades be added to counteract lag?
Needed, a serious geek to come and say yes or no in plain english.
I commend CCP for spending real-life money to try and fix the lag problem.

The devs should update the blog article as well to remind people to stock up on POS FUEL. Incase the downtime does extend to 48 hours.
Many people rely too much on Devs timeline. Would be a shame to see some dreads flying just after downtime killing offline pos

Do the blades contain
1) 2 single core processors 2) 1 dual core processor 3) 2 dual core processors
I assume the first based on what I've read. If so, why haven't you used dual core processors? Is it because there is no need or because of diminishing returns because dual core processors are memory bandwidth constrained for this application?

Dakath, yes we will be able to expand the cluster by adding new Bladecenter chassis and blades to the existing hardware as needed.
Nakamo, #3 is correct. The new blades are dual-core, cual CPU Opterons. Oveur mentioned this in this Dev Blog from last month.

For the love of God, I hope we don't see the usual whine fest if things aren't running smoothly straight away.
Can't even play the game from where I am, till may at least and I'm excitedly watching the forums to see how it all goes. Reading whinges won't be nice. Can't wait to read how "smooth it all" is instead.
Best of luck guys. See you flip side...
