now I know its a silly thing to get annoyed about, but I find it to be one of the most annoying and bizzare "misspellings" that ever occurs.
where do people get the idea theres an N in the word "Turret"?
it doesn't phonetically SOUND like theres an N.
I've not heard of any dialect or accent of english in which it DOES sound like theres an N.
the closest thing to sounding remotely the same that DOES have an N is torrent, which of course has an ENTIRELY different meaning.
some misspellings make sense. but this is one I just can't imagine a single reasonable excuse for.
any thoughts or rationalizations for this strangely common error?
and yes, I do know its a stupid thing to get annoyed about.

Before eve I played an half life mod that was called "Natural Selection", it is the best hl mod ever.
In that game you could place Sentry turrets that were shooting automatically at the other fraction, which were aliens.
After awhile some stupid people called them "TORRENTS" (the caps is important here) and then everyone yelled on the servers and on the forums "COMMANDA WE NEED MORE TORRENTS!!11 THERE IS A LORK ON THE CLORFF!!!11 OH NOES THEY HAVE ONOS!!"
dunno if that helps you

'Turrents' used to crop up in planetside so it has a certain amount of history... it annoyed me then too.
Also, DEIMOS (as opposed to dIEmos or deMIos).. i dont like the idea of flying something that half the population apparently think is named after an old crap Mazda.

What about inventing new words from typos?
Case in point: "pwn" born from the combination "p" being next to the "o" and typing quickly in "chat/say all" trash talking.
Now I here people on TS or Vent pronouncing "pwned" instead of "owned" even though it was visually l337 to type "own" with a "p", saying it aloud is stupid.

If you're going to be picky, even using "owned" to describe the destruction of an enemy is a bit iffy.

I agree, but at least it was using an existing word and giving it a slang meaning. Not accepting a typo as a new word all together.

The owned -> pwned analogy is faulty. turret consist of the letters t (upper left), u (upper right), r (upper left) and e (upper left). Why on earth would people accidentally add n (lower right)!?
And while on the subject, I find it annoying when people write: "Gellent" "Gillent" (They're not a bunch of super-smooth shavers, people!) "Thier" The twenty-seventh "OMG! THE LAG" post for this afternoon. "Help me find the best <..> ship" (Let's face it, we can only help you find the WORST ship) "Missile" right next to "Gallente" or "Amarr" (see my sig)

Because many people are not native English, they learned the language. This meand they are sometimes not sure what they type, and sometimes ppl tend to make stupid typos. One big reason: just for fun to p off ppl like you ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

yup that's painful. I also am pretty sure that Hemorphite should be spelt "Haemorphite" as in Haemoglobin. I also found a spelling error in one of the IG companies (Like Ishukhone, etc), wish i could remeber which one it was though... You wasted 4 seconds reading this post and you'll never get those back. |

Well the 'fraction' one is a very very common error my german countrymen insist to make because the german word for faction is 'Fraktion'. Some actually use 'fraction' in their faction/alliance names
And actually dict.leo.org, which is usually a good source of german-english translations, lists fraction with (among the usual things) the same meaning as faction which I find odd. I never read or heard any native english using fraction in a political sense, only mathematical/scientific. Whats the native speakers take on that?

Back in the days of Starsiege Tribes a developer misspelled turret on one of the game's forums. A few players copied the wrong form as an 'in' joke. Newer players thought it was the name of a special ingame item, so also started to use it.
