Yay I'm in a necro thread.
I'll be honest here, I spell "turret," but I pronounce the word "turrent."
No clue where that's from though.

My personal Pet Peeve is when people refer to weapon magazine capacity as "Clip size." CCP does it too, which makes me wonder. . .
FYI, a clip would be a piece of material that CLIPS the rounds together. I.E. M1 Garand ammo comes in 8 rd. clips, or a "stripper clip" holds 5-10 rounds which allows rounds to be quickly loaded into a magazine.

In english, and especially american english, you just append -es to the plural form of words ending with us. However, if you want to be a bit more old-fashioned and use a plural form closer to the word's origin, the plural form is actually -i with the -us removed.
But... latin isn't my strong point, so...
Latin based words ending in -us never get the -us dropped when describing more than one of the particular item. Now Greek based words, on the other hand, such as fungus, do drop the us, in preference of the -i, when describing more than one.
If you're unsure, go to www.thefreedictionary.com or www.m-w.com (being Merriam-Webster, the last one), and either one or both shall show you the correct speeling for the plural form of a word.

If you want to "englicise" the word (is that right ?), the it's bonuses.
If you want to use the plural form of the latin word, it's boni.
I've studied latin for 8 years, trust me on this.

Actually Turrent has been used for years and years. I remember playing with people in Tribes that used to say turrent.

I just find it annoying when people refer to EVE as 'EvE'. Even some guide writers do it. It drives me bonkers. -------------------------------------------- You will also find that training other race skills will open up a new style of gameplay. You will have fun. Try that.

In that game you could place Sentry turrets that were shooting automatically at the other fraction, which were aliens.
After awhile some stupid people called them "TORRENTS" (the caps is important here) and then everyone yelled on the servers and on the forums "COMMANDA WE NEED MORE TORRENTS!!11 THERE IS A LORK ON THE CLORFF!!!11 OH NOES THEY HAVE ONOS!!"
dunno if that helps you

I know how turret is spelled, I know how turret is pronounced, and I hate it when other people write "turrent" but more than once I've caught myself typo'ing it with the 'n' in it. Its like my fingers wanna type that, and I know its not because of "torrent" because I rarely if ever use that word.
Some other very common word with "rent" in it might be doing it.

I'm guessing it's two things:
1. people tend to type in bursts approximating morphemes, rather than letter by letter (in the same way that we read by recognizing shapes of words rather than letters.
2. words ending in 'rent' (rent, torrent, current) are more common than 'ret' (um... 'fret'? 'regret'?) so when some people get to the end part of 'turret' they just add the 'n' without thinking.
The word is just harder to say. The non-emphasized "net" as a word-ending sound simply doesn't occur anywhere else in common english. People are familiar with the non-emphasized "rent" or "rant" in parent, current, pennant, torrent.

In fact, one of the community relations managers for PlanetSide, SmokeJumper, at one point posted for us the first known incidence of this particular mispelling... I can't remember the details but it went way back.

my english teacher (actually if remember correctly only the british english teacher, not the american one) was pretty strict about it, and told us, the word is actually pronounced "turreNts". but that was like 10 years ago, dunno if such things change that quickly. -- Only you can save MMORPGS - Stop whining today! |

Interestingly enough, I would understand completely if the standard keyboard layout were DVORAK instead of QWERTY.
On DVORAK keyboards, the "N" key is directly below the "R" key and directly to the right of the "T" key...so it would be a perfectly understandable typo.
However, I've never met anybody else who uses DVORAK, despite trying to convince various people to try it. --------------------- Originally by: Herko Kerghans Nik = win. Period.
