Edited by: Isidor Sek on 25/02/2006 14:18:11 Good day everyone
I am professor Isidor Sek, eve historian and editor of a new EVE newspaper launching next week. As such, on the eve of what will probably come to be know as GNW II. I wanted to ask veterans of the original conflict for some help on some background facts of GNW I, so that our reportage can be based on a factual and broad picture of the original conflict.
Firstly, of course, I accept that the events of the last week or so can not truly be called GNW II until BoB arrives.. at this point the circle will be complete. However please forgive my paper if we save the confusion and refer to events in the north as GNW II.
Our Questions:
Roughly what date did the GNW I begin and end? What Alliances and major independant corps took part? How were the sides divided, who was on each side? Which alliances / corps were born of the conflict or disappeared during its course? In your own opinion what events lead to the beginning of the conflict and what events lead to its end? What in your opinion was GNW I's greatest moment, wether a specific battle, galnet broadcast etc etc
(PLEASE NOTE: express your own version of events, do not crtique others here, we are trying to collect peoples memories together then deduce an overall picture ourselves)
All witness statements and informnation appreciated, along with our coverage of GNW II, we would like to run a background feature on the first so readers have a sense of context.
Thanks

In which case, if many of you do not wish to call it GNW II I must ask what it is.. its scale is the same. All Northern states at war, G/IRON invading FE last night, PA falling to 5 forces this week... FE under attack in the south.. NBSI fighting.. well everyone... with the exception of NORAD (small North central) and BoB attacking from the west, its all there..
As such one has to ask what the essential difference is? if it revolves around one person speaking or not speaking on these forums, one has to ask what defines war in eve.
For the purposes of our reporting we will continue to refer to it as Great North War II until such time as a better more appropiate term is provided or some provides a sensible explaination as to why it is not.
Thanks

It lacks the personalities. The cult leaders. The Jades, Halseths and Molle's (this isnt really BoBs war). People that whole alliances can blindly hate or love and fight for/against. Thats the difference to me.
as it doesnt involve any alliances outside the north, id call it the great northern civil war.

Indeed that is true,
I suspect however the conflict will produce those.. persh of FE springs to mind as one example... however a conflict is not defined simply by who ranted most about it. It is its scale, how much spoace it encompasses and the impact it has.
Already GNW II is radically redrawing the map of the North, it deserves the name for that reason alone.

Actually slother i think 5 would be most insulted by your indication they are a northen alliance. I believe they initiated the GNW II from coming quite frimly from the south.

5 is just claiming space in the north so what else should they be instead of a northern alliance?

Germany 'claimed' France as territory in world war II.. it didnt suddenly make them french did it.
5 was a Southern Alliance, they were defeated by RA and lost thier southern space, they headed north and attacked PA. Notice the proliferation of the word south there. In essence some of 5 is still in the south in a new alliance, while the morecarebear elements of 5 live in Syndicate. So no, they're not a Northern Alliance, they may well become one though.

bad example because i didnt say the alliance is another now. I simple stated that their geographical place of operation changed and thus makes them effectivly a northern alliance. To take ur example, if germany would have conquered china and all germans moved to it they would be still germans (like 5 members are still 5 members) but they wouldnt be a european power, they simply would be an asian power. It hardly matters now that 5 has a long history of being part of the south because things change and just cause u "feel" like 5 has to be a southern alliance doesnt make them one.

5 is living, fighting and claming space in the north, what else is needed to label them as a northern alliance? And its tbh not up to anyones personal taste to what part of the map they belong, the facts speak for themselfs. If they decide some day, even tomorrow, to go back to the south then they are ofc again a southern alliance but atm they are clearly settled in the north and its not just a roadtrip and there is no other 5 activity besides those in the north, not to mention the wars they started up there.
It might be weird to some to name 5 a northern alliance but "northern alliance" describes nothing more than the geographical position of an alliance and not its political stance so i dont see a reason not to call em a northern alliance.

Edited by: Isidor Sek on 25/02/2006 15:32:52 I suspect Dax you are splitting hairs here, quite substantially. I am not saying that 5 will not become a northern alliance. I am saying they are not now. Not all of 5 are here by any measure. Its ATUK in the majority. The rest of 5 are located in Syndicate and in the south.
However you have thankfully demonstrated why we felt a new eve news service is required, the scope is frequently ill informed, lacks in depth editorial and tends to gloss over facts in favour of whoever they can interview at the time. Thus we do not wish to replace Scope, but do want to offer another voice and broaden the range of news sources. we all miss Eve Guardian in this aspect.
Thanks

PS: Its good we should disagree, a free press should do just that, offer broad differing views! |

Wow, the newspaper isn't even out yet and already trying to coin new catchphrases? This reminds me of when american news tried to start calling 'suicide bombers' 'homicide bombers'.

Not entirely correct. Atuk, Black Omega Security, Delta Team and a couple of Black Reign are up in the north, most of Supremacy are still in Syndicate.

I don't think this current war is on the same scale as the GNW.
I have a good perspective to speak from as I was one of the leaders of one of the alliances, slightly, involved in the conflict.
PA at the time were a powerhouse, they are unrecognisable in their current form. They had about 50+ corps and around 4000? members, I believe. In many people opinion, they were a rival to CA, at the time.
They used this strength to pressure the smaller northern alliances into accepting their policies. Their main concern was to unite the northern allies against their old enemy Evolution (now part of BoB) and leave a buffer zone in between empire space and their territory.
In negations they were very abrasive, arrogant and over bearing. This imperial attitude lead to an explosive atmosphere, which was ignited by an incident involving a PA corp attacking a neutral.
This event resulted in Reikuko (now BoB) and Jericho Fraction declaring war on PA. We had been working closely with Reikuko,JF, Fade Union and Deklien and therefore, despite the overwhelming strength of PA, declared war on PA.
Soon after Fade Union, Norad ( or just BNC, can't remember) and deklien joined in the war against PA. Many of the initial engagements went in PA's favour, primarily due to their massive number advantage. However, this was to change. Two corps changed the direction of the war, namely Evolution and MOO, who returned from their campaign against CA.
The subsequent 2-3 months was a slowly but surely decline in PA's strength. Corps began to leave the alliance and eventually they evacuated their claimed regions.
After the fall of PA, Band of Brothers was formed between the main corps involved in the destruction of PA, namely EVOL, RKK and BNC. MOO sadly disbanded but many of their vets joined BoB. FU and Deklien also under went a number of transformations and Jericho Fraction is still around somewhere.
ThatĘs how I remember the GNW from my perspective as UNICOR and EV Foreign affairs director. A lot of fun, tense and rewarding times, which, many of the people involved in, consider their best times in Eve.
