If you'd actually been bothered to read what Valar has been posting, you would know that this is not the case. Dismissing his argument as "techie" is not valid - you can't have a debate about a system without the reasoning why that system was introduced. And in the world of computer systems, that explanation will, by definition, require a level of technical detail. Like it nor not, RL computing realities will have an effect on the game. If you argue a point like this without taking that into account, you might as well just sit there demanding the moon on a stick.
The travel advisories should only kick in when a system is still being loaded right after a server restart (so if it's that much of a risk for you, just wait 15mins after restart before trying, as you were forced to do before by the "cluster starting up" delay), or if the system is properly stuck. Once the memory leak is sorted, lag or busy system shouldn't be able to trigger it, unless the lag is so bad that it effectively makes the system stuck anyway (If nothing responds for 15 minutes, I'd say you're stuck!).
Originally by: Tas Devil I'm with you on this 100% from a PVP point of view the concequences of this new 'service' (I'd rather call it a poor way of dealing with a RL issue of server congestion) could be quite severe... and totally unfair...
You say it's unfair that people could run up against a locked gate and be ganked. Well how fair is it to the people chasing you if you can jump into a stuck system and thus essentially fall off the face of the universe? Heck, I'd call that the ultimate way round the PvP logoff timer.
Personally I've never liked the way gates act as an instant, certain "get out of jail free" escape card, especially for those camps that sit everyone on top of it, and simply jump through without firing if anything bigger comes to get them. Once the current memory issue is sorted, gates will still be the bankable escape route they are now 99% of the time, you'll be more likely to lose a ship to a CTD or lag spike than you are because of hitting up aginst a locked gate. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |
