They are making significant progress towards a market economy however. This is required before democracy can succed as such. There have been attempts in the past in China to radically alter the economy and these have for the most part ended in widespread starvation and disaster. Therefore radically altering the economy to a market system overnight is politically as well as economically impossible. The huge unemployment and rapid inflation that often accompanies the dismantling of planned economies is something that has to be managed over time. A lot of time. Opposition parties do exist and have been recognised by the government as far as I know. These include Falungong and the Chinese Democracy Party. So while China has an image of chronically poor human rights and oppression that may have been true from 1960 - 1990, much progress has been made, and there remains a huge amount more to be done of course. -------------------------------------------------- Sig hijacked by myself cos I am not very cool

And considering that for nearly 2 years they ran a Chinese Wikipedia, and they are currently considering loosening or even shutting down the firewall, it is extremely ignorant to look at China like you have. Do some research, ask around, take a neutral view until you know all the facts and know them well.
