Hey guys whats up? This is my first post on the forums. I just got the game a few days ago and love it. I am just on a trial account, only until my tax returns come out though. Anyway I wanted to start a fruitful discussion on the potential energy need to destroy a planet. I am no energy or space expert so I would love your guys' thoughts. :)

Developers can do it with the "Delete" key, but other than that, not so much.

Edited by: David Corbett on 16/03/2006 06:17:28 Edited by: David Corbett on 16/03/2006 06:16:50 Depends on the size and composition of the planet, of course. It's a really large number... something like 1e28 joules for an Earthlike planet (111.11 gigatonnes of matter and antimatter colliding together, for example.)
Oh, and note that that's in actual mass, not in tonnes of TNT.

Also you might want to define what you mean by "destoy"
do you mean exstinguish all life? render uninhabitable? Fracture crust? fragment into asteriod belt? Turn all matter into fine dust? turn all matter into vapor? convert all mass into energy? --------------------- Nerd 1: You like my Thorax? Do you want my Thorax? Tell me where you want my Thorax. haha wow that's disturbing. And probably a good sized chunk of antimatter could do it BUT antimatter is extreamly hard to come by. (Fact a teaspoon of Antimatter can produce enough energy to problem a ship to mars. The probably though is how to store the stuff.)

Hmm, destroy a planet?
I'd have to say one male and one female human being. Add some time and it's solved, planet destroyed.

you do realize that from just one breeding pair, you are not going to have enough genetic diversity for a sustainable human population
however if that one male and female are piloting a titan.... well thats a diferent story --------------------- Nerd 1: You like my Thorax? Do you want my Thorax? Tell me where you want my Thorax. Nerd 2: Yes, god yes, your Thorax is so gorgeous, stick it right into my Rifter, oh yeah |

You lost your 20 ISK. Because I don't know the answer.
However I can look it up.
If you mean by destroy a planet, all you need to know is the gravitational binding energy.
And using google:
((3 / 5) * (mass of Earth^2) * G) / radius of Earth = 2.24047739 + 10^32 joules
To be exact, this is about the equivalent of 535,486,949,000,000 100-megaton hydrogen bombs.
