EA is the fat ugly worm living in the apple that is the gameindustry.
I think quitting EVE will not be a choice anymore if EA buys the place...you just quit. --- soonÖ |

If this isn't just a rumor and it happens. IF EA ends up buying this game...
I'll be the first person to cancel. I've had too many bad experiences with their CS and various online games of theirs.

Although this looks a little grim on the surface, i for one would like eve to be owned by someone who actually wants to own it and run it as a core part of their business, at the mo we just get thrown the odd bone.

Agreed
From the sounds of it the message coming across is one of doom and gloom. I've heard company speak like this before and it always leads to a bad ending.

SSI is a publishing company not the makers of eve directly. So it doesnt matter if they sell up or not it doesnt affect eve at all.
It just means we might see an updated rule book in newer printing runs

Edited by: Ange Noire on 12/09/2003 11:06:48 Well i'm just a student grade in english (i'm french), so maybe i miss some langage subtilities on this new but :
Didn't they said "publishing" ? publishing in the country where i leave mean : selling, nothing about CS or anything else.
DAoC in europe was publishing by Vivendi, who if you don't know collapsed, divided in several small units. Does that mean that DAoC died ? no not at all, because that was not Vivendi who do the CS but GOA (well it's just a bit better ;p)
This exemple is not intersting for no-european ppl, but everybody can understand that even is EA "publish" Eve, they will not be a part of the "in game live process, devellopement or customers support".
unless i miss something important on this rumors

All we need is some US company to take this operation over, bring servers in the US, take the bandwith cap off, drop a few hundred mil into CCP and we should be ok.
:)

This could possibly be a good thing for Eve (if its true).
The way things are going at the moment I don't see Eve lasting a long time. It feels as though more people are loosing interest and moving on than there are new players. Obviously this is to be expected from a MMOG but due to the small player base we've always had it is having more of a detrimental impact than it would in EQ.
If one of the giants bought up S&S then there is a fair chance that they would heavily promote Eve. The expensive years of pre-retail development are now over and money is being seen from it.
Promotion -> More Players -> More money -> More incentive to maintain playerbase -> More developers -> More features etc.
This is obviously an optimistic way to appoach the situation but not an entirely unbelievable one. Many of us may hate the way that the Sims got turned into a cash cow but if Eve could have even a fraction of players that the Sims did then it would renew my faith a little.

all this doom and gloom......eve numbers seem to be on the up if you ask me but as has been said above if it is sold as long as the current devs go with it then all should still be rosey

This would be a terrible thing to happen, from what I hear a majority of eve players are actully European for a start.
If they move them anywhere it should be to CCP's HQ in iceland so they can look after it themselves.
This is not nessiseraly a bad thing if it happens but hopefully they will opt for being purchased by a smaller studio which will give the game more creative juces rather than a large studio - eg EA/Sony.
I can see a lot of support and encoragement happening if it fell in the hands of someone like Serra. BSC, Chief Tactical Officer

Even if it were to happen, CS would stay the same as it it based in Iceland and is compleatly independent of SSI.

Are you sure the US won't mistake it for a deadly weapon of mass destruction?

I thought I'd point out:
A few years ago, a MPOG by the name of SubSpace was released by Virgin (a UK company I believe). It was very popular in beta, and became even more popular in release.. at least, popular enough to make it worth keeping alive. Good numbers, considering the type of gameplay.
A surprsingly short time after release, Virgin decided to sell it's subsidiary production company Westwood, which produced SubSpace.. unfortunately, SubSpace was somehow dropped/not included, and has since fallen into public domain.
Fans now keep the game alive, by messing around with the game client, modding, and running servers.. I wonder if this could happen to EVE?
I do tend to gravitate to star-crossed games - full of potential, yet destined to fall into ruin...

Westwood Studios?
Were they not responsible for C&C?
