Edited by: Trevedian on 05/04/2006 03:15:13 I just had to share this story about video games being offered to convicts as a reward for good behavior. Prisoners get to play 50 games on a flatscreen if they've been "Good Boys".
A link to the article can be found; Here
Sadly, "Grand Theft Auto" is not available atm in this program.
The thought of prison used to scare me, all that lifting weights and armwrestling Bubba for a pack of cigarettes never appealed to me. But "Video Games in Prison" WOOT!
"Hard Time" wouldn't seem so hard if you could just play video games to pass the time. What do people thing of this? You jealous?

Think of how bad we'd own them all though...
On the other hand.... They'd probably start their own player corps and have all their jail buddy '*****es' that wear mops on their heads to look like lil school girls run mining ops while they give them bj's in the entertainment room.
Probably a good idea not to offer GTA

Hey, now they can finally make corp theft illegal, because even though the players get sent to jail, they can keep playing EVE! Everybody wins! -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!

I cannot think of a single reward for good behavior that would make up for having do endure endless 'encounters' in the shower or 'creative' uses of utensils, such as spoons.

Oregon = US = privately owned prisons = set amount of public cash per customer. Those not causing any troubles and raised expenses in 18 months might be worth the little bonus of the handheld console (and thus no EVE). --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. Finally there's something I can be successful at in prison. I can trade my leet gaming skills for not having to meet Ben Dover in the shower!

but even everyone has his own fridge because maybe else there will be fights :| that sorta stuff , and here they still think its weird that homeless people commit crimes to be in a nice warm place with more stuff then they have on the streets

I'd rather have criminals sitting at a computer for hours than have them lifting weights imo, unless they're researching how to commit more crimes.

I think video games in prison are definitely a good idea.
As scary as they may look on TV, most of the inmates are good at heart but made a mistake at some point of their life.
I only have second hand knowledge, but prison is all about passing time for the majority of the inmates.
We all know how fast time is passing while playing games. "Ohhh, 6 o'clock in the morning already? I was only gonna finish this mission!" anyone?
The chance to get to spend a notable amount of time on the computer will definitely encourage people to show good behaviour rather than the expectation to get a job in the laundry. Prisoners may only take one or two showers per week, mind you
A lot more arguments spring to mind, but no one is gonna read them all anyway. Its a good idea, and i'd like to see it in germany too.

So you'd rather have inmates just sitting on their asses for 12 hours a day, growing tired of life and even more ****** up than they were, when they did whatever they got thrown in there for?
Or would you rather have them play Pacman and actually have a change to get rehabilitated?
I see your point...(not )

I saw in the article that 95% of them will be comming back to jail again anyway. I'm guessing it has to do with letting them play pacman rather than beating them with rusty chains.

Does anyone else think that going to prison should you know.... Be a punishment ?
Prehaps not in the non secure facilities (the ones where ppl are close to paroll and could technicly just wander out anyway...) But my hard earned money taken away from me in tax really shouldn't be for them to play video games
As to someone saying "this is to rehabilitate them" umm right ? Afaik you can take qualifications while in prison, even degree's. And thats surely the way ppl should be encouraged rather than "if you dont beat someone up today you can play eve for a bit "
Its a big enough ******* joke that I pay taxes for the police force for the large part to do absolutely **** all usefull.... but this just takes the pee

yes please reward the person who raped your sister, stole your car and torched it, burned your house down, sold ***** on the corner... you get it?
prisons are for bad people, period. Time is supposed to be hard, to make them realize what they did is wrong.

Did you read the statistic on the article? It says 95% of them are repeat offenders. Jail is not the place for entertainment. Home is for entertainment. They'd be home and entertained if they didn't kill 5 people. I want jail to make a good enough impression on them so that they won't want a second helping. Not a slap on the wrist followed by free pacman. I support spending the money on clubs and other bludgeoning instruments that the guards can beat them with at random.

Problem is that 'doing hard time' doesn't make them realise that what they did was wrong. If they spend their time in there beating people up, raping each other, assaulting warders, and dealing drugs, then how does that rehabilitate them?
Fact to the matter is, that most people who've comited murder/*****or whatever, will not change no matter what you do to them. But those guys are in there for 20 to life anyway. The mass population of people in jail are someone who might have sold some dope, stole something, etc etc etc. It was wrong yes, but would you really rather have them go in there as thieves, and come out as murderers? If letting them play video games helps them get rehabilitated, then so be it.
Oh, and:
Originally by: John Mathias Did you read the statistic on the article? It says 95% of them are repeat offenders. Jail is not the place for entertainment.
Did you even read the article? Because this was what was said:
Originally by: Article This was important, said Ms Damon, because 95% of the state's prisoners will eventually return to the community.
The community here is not the prison community.
