I have seen the word "blob" used to degrade combat in this game. You even see people talking about how to reduce the effectiveness of the blob and how to stop blob combat and so on. Quite frankly this seems silly at best to me. Its not a blob, its a fleet.
A fleet is "A number of warships operating together under one command.." The fact that it was not your command and you got killed is hardly the reason to decide that Eve would suddenly be better off without fleet warfare. What shall we do, boil all PvP down to a series fo one on one encounters where the biggest ship wins and l33t speaking players can boast about their poweress?
I personally dont want to see the abolishment of "the blob". Fleet warfare has thousands of tactics and endless variation that make it far more interesting than single one on one combat. If anything I would like to see the enhancement of fleet combat. Those that get caught alone by another fleet will just have to suck it up and realize they goofed. Throughout military history groups of small combatants have engaged larger, better equipped foes and won. I dont want to see that aboulished.
There are always those that will read the above and then come in with a satement like, "Yeah but this warp in and 20 battleships firing at primary target assuming he doesnt warp away stuff stinks." First of all, it does stink of boredom because those fleets often spend more time not fighting than fighting. But the fault lies in the fleet commanders and not the game. Instead of dealing with all of their ships, they scorn anyone not in a BS and tell all their tacklers that they are "disposable" already throwing them out like used kleenex. Consequently those poeple dont show up anymore because they know the fleet commander doesnt care. The fleet commander is also being foolish in not thinking out of the box about new tactics that are more creative that "primary target, secondary target." They dont think about organizing fire teams, fitting as a fleet, having preplanned maneuvers or any of the other things that modern military commanders think about. Do you think the admirals of the US navy just calls primary target? The fault is in players, not the game. My corp has demonstrated that we can kill snipers 200km off the gate with a bunch of frigs. How? Tactics.
If anything, fleet warfare needs to be enhanced. There are FEW if any decisive battles in Eve. People dont want to loose their BS and they spend a lot of time safe spotted or docked and pinning them is difficult at best. By the time the tacklers fly that 100km they are dead or the other fleet warps off. There needs to be more mechanisms to create decisive combats. Just some ideas off the top of my head are.
* Interdictors should be able to fire bubbles AT enemies. * Warp jammers should be much easier to run on smaller ships and they should have an ability to fire a tag at the target jamming it for 2 min rather than having to stay in range. * Effective ranges of deployable warp bubbles should be increased radically. Its psychotic that a ship as fast as an interceptor can deploy a better jhammer than setting up a jammer and waiting a minute to put it online. Small bubbles should work up to 20km and mediums to 50km. * Deployable warp bubbles should pull people out of deep warp so you could deploy them in between 2 stargates in the middle and catch people.
The problem is also that the tools for controlling the fleet are apalling at best.
The problem isnt the blob. The problem is players not liking getting hit when alone by a FLEET. The problem is also the lack of DECISIVE battles in Eve. battles where 80 or 90% of ships in a side will be lost, not 1 battleship of 35.

From what I see on these forums, most of the complaints about so-called blob warfare come from large groups of players who will happily target small gangs or individuals, but then retreat to a safespot when another fleet that comes close to matching them warps in. I agree with Rells though; properly organised fleet combat in Eve (lag allowing) is fine and I can't see CCP raising the nerfbat against it any time soon.

Hence my statement that the problem is not enough decisive battles. Its far too easy to hide in the game and far far too easy to get away. A fleet of battleships engaging in 0.0 should have a very hard time disengaging. Any military commander today will tell you that disengaging the enemy is very hard.
In eve its pathetically easy. Stay outside 20km and you are fine. I think warp jammers should work a heck of a lot further out as well. -- Rells

I'd like to see Interdictors fire "Interdiction Missiles", which have a "flash in the pan" type interdiction time frame, no longer than 10-15 seconds.
I'd like to see large warp bubbles seeded.
I'd like to see Citadel Torpedos do splash damage.
I'd like to see Flak Cannons.
I'd like to see Tech II Destroyers.
I'd like to see Light Freighters.

For the most part I agree.
This game could use an in-game VoIP or a way to organize chat channels (able to division channels so that 1st leader types, it is seen in all channels; squadron leaders type, it is seen in the squadron channel; something like that with the VoIP or the chat channels).
Also, make the tactical overlay more useful by allowing color coded flashing lights able to be assigned by commanders/squadron leaders to point out targets (specific colors set to the type of target, such as tackler, EW ship, tanker, gangker, etc.)
Thirdly, anything that makes every type of ship more critical and needed in battles is a plus to me. (From frigs - titans).

Huh. The only person to disagree doesn't have the presence of mind to actually say why. Typical.
Anyway, I haven't done much pvp, but I can see some great fleet battles happening with some/all of your ideas. However, there is a downside to solo play.
Imagine trying to run from a gank and getting hit with a scrambler missile, even though your ship is twice as fast as anything chasing you.
I like the idea of remote disable to encourage people who are engaged to actually fight it out instead of crying to momma, but it should be restricted to fleet battles.
So maybe a small group of frigates needs to work in conjuction to scramble targets, using complimentary modules. The more frigs grouped, the more range they have and the more targets they can scramble.
Perhaps some modules that assist other ships (IE, the aformentioned group scramble) require command ships present in the fleet in order to work.
Basically, if the ability to trap fleets is going to be upgraded, it should be LESS effective against solo targets, not MORE effective.

Larger Splash damage from certain types of missles and/or rockets.
Specialized Anti-Missle ships with effective "defender missles".

You would have multiple sensor dampeners and ECM jammers hitting you. Your targeting time on one frig would be 90 seconds or more and in that 90 seconds you are likely to be flat jammed. There is much more. Vs 30 ships it would be only a matter of time before we got you. -- Rells

A blob is when you bring a enough people so as to outnumber your opponent by so much that there is no reason for them to even attempt to fight you.
Blobbers use large fleets in an effort to achieve risk free PvP. What the usually end up with is no PvP.
The only instance where a blob really makes any sense is when conquering stations or sieging pos's, in which case you don't really want to fight the enemy, you want to blow up their stuff.

That anti-missile ship idea is good. Destroyers with really short range cannons that have crazy firing rates. Stick close to battleships and anything hostile that gets too close gets ate.
Basically point defense ships with chain cannons.

Gungankllr, I'd rather have Eliza Dusku on my lap. Allison Hannigan would be even better . A lot of good stuff in there though. I like it.
I like some of the interdiction ideas. Set up so you can pull people out of warp when they're moving between gates.
I also think the should be an interdictor missles, along the lines of the LDSI missles in IWar. When a ship starts the warp, fire this missle. It chases them up the warp tunnel, explodes when it gets to them, creating a temporary deadspace pocket, and sends a bookmark to the friendly fleet. They can then warp in and WTFBBQPWN the guy that ran away. Naturally using such a missle in hi-sec will cause CONCORD to greet you. Even funnier if they greet you where the interdictor missle went off
A devil I may be, but I am trying to help you. You just don't realise it yet. |

Tough one. Are you implying local/server lag? Or are you implying, perhaps, the actual game-side managability, if so then you need a special mindset, really.

Blobs, I've noticed, is mostly defined as a "fleet bigger than ours". Yes, you are correct. Lots of blobs who don't want to loose. Interesting side-effect is that they seldom win, cause they "blob".
Fleets get bigger, blobs get bigger. Hmm, no. ASCN and/or BoB fleets get bigger, the rest I don't know about. Back in old days the fleets were quite big (etc etc)

Please, never say again that the actual word for blob is "zerg", thx.
Zerg is from WoW players? Hmm not really, Planetside was out long before WoW hit the shelves and Zerging was quite a familiar term over there. So yes, in MMO terms blob = zerg no matter how you look at it.
Okay, my fault. Delete the "WoW" letters and the sense of the posting remains the same. Don't discuss the detail but the content in the first place.

Zergling is a unit of the Zergs from Starcraft that was used to swarm players early on in a match. Hence the name Zerg rush.

Edited by: The Colonel on 11/04/2006 21:26:56 didnt the term 'blob' come from the fact that in the days of virtual real time map updates fleets showed up as 'blobs', bigger the blob bigger the fleet and quicker the log?
I dont regard it a negative term, fleet sounds too formal to me, but then the virtual star captains probably love all that.

If it looks like blob, sounds like a blob, it most likely is a blob.
I mean come on Rells. If that large post was for you to inform the world of Eve that you can't handle the term 'blob' and prefer a more civilizated word like 'fleet'... then you need to concetrate more on your fleets and quit whining.
When I see a fleet, I'll call it a fleet... but until then, all I see are blobs.
Fleets are supposed to fight, not try to outblob another blob and call it warfare, then jump to safespot at any sign of danger.
Besides, its a term... I'm sorry if sticks and stones break bones, but words will never hurt you. Get over it. You don't see carebears whining... is this what big pvpers think about? 'blobs' being so degrading to them? LOL
ummm.. yea... thats all i have to comment on...

"Zerging" is not appropriate in EVE imho because the "respawn" (or, "build rate") is not quick enough. For it to be a proper "zerg" you'd have a steady stream of zerglings rushing (quick build, dirt cheap), in MMOs, this is typically the same people dying, rezing, then coming immediately back and rushing. EVE has neither thing, dying has meaningfull losses (even for a frigate fleet), and you require time to repurchase a clone and setup another ship before departing and getting out to whereever you were (many combat actions may take place many jumps from the nearest cloning station).
This is why you never hear about "zerging" in EVE... --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

I agree entirely. There is nothing wrong with a Blob/fleet.
What is bad is both sitting at safespots never engaging, gate camps being the forced static engagement point without the chance for movement around the system.
I think it's the inability to pursue people around a system that makes every stagnant. A pursuit module that would allow ships to follow others in warp would make combat more exciting and interesting.

The best way to defeat a frig fleet is to bring 1 ship for every 4 or 5 frigates in the opposing fleet. The "OMG, i've got 55mil skillpoints and a battleship, I can take these noobs!" idea is incredibly prevalent, even though its said all the time that frigate fleets of low sp players can take down far larger ships with far more experience.
Best ships are dominixes, ishtars and vexors, for the obvious reason that their main weapon is immune to electronic warfare (you lose a degree of control, but they're still firing). Ships fielding medium blasters can do well too (web, activate blasters, next target), especially as the thorax, deimos, brutix and astarte all have space for medium drones. You usually want to be in battleships when overwhelmed by frigs though. This is only from a Gallente standpoint - as thats all I can fly!
(Oh, and has anyone ever seen a frig fleet get caught one by one in a bubble only to be hit by a couple of blaster boats right on the bubble's edge? My CEO was dying of laughter ) --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

blobbing is when you pretend you want pvp when in fact you just want to have enough ships to make your enemy not engage. For example when everyone in your ranks knows (but no one admits it) that you are way ****ter than your enemy and have to do this. Or you might be one of those living in a magical fairy land and expect the other part will agree to your "no risk for me" terms.
It's all down to attitude wheather you're in a blob or in a fleet.

I just have one thing to add.
LIMPET MINES
Tracking and long term detection would be easy to code and FTS to play. Deployables like the [impossible to find, I think removed from the game] explosive mines, as well as limpets, should be in the game.
No question about it.

How about
Blob: Disorganisd group of players with little to know combat expericaned, who gather in large numbers for safety reasons. Often ineffective, slow moving, and dissorganised. Ushally done either to obliterate thier enemy through the force of sheer numbers, or pilot induced lag. Though it rarely works as most people are to expericanced to fall for it.
Fleet: A group of expericanced PVP pilots. Often highly organized, and capable of moving at speeds roughly equal to the speed of a solo pilot. Very effecitive in terms of acieving goals. And adapt at destroying blobs due to better pilots, orginasation, and tactics.

What I might ask is: do experienced PvPers not stick together for safety? Or are they doing it for looks. People seem to expect the newbies to experience only one form of PvP: getting ganked while mining/traveling/ratting. Should they actually have the audacity and organization to fight back, they're "blobbing."
Large groups are a viable and legitimate tactical decision. Goonfleet is an extreme example, but using numbers to leverage an advantage is not new, not specific to Eve and is definitely not "newb tactics." I've taken ships that are weaker than my opponents and survived and taken them down. Every time, I was supported by one or more people who wished to help. Is that blobbing? Is that lame? I'd assert that sitting 150km off a gate shooting helpless newbies is lame, while managing to find a way (any way) to get a takedown of that battleship in a number of cheaper and faster ships is an achievement.

I'm doing it because 3 people working together, are infinatly more effective then three people working alone.
Saftey in eve is boring, if I'm in a group, my purpose is to find anouther group of simular size to engage.

I think people are missing the point of the op. I don't rells really is so concerned about the terminology except to prove his point that fleet warfare can be quite complex and interesting and should be enhanced, not prohibited. In that case I wholeheartedly agree with him.
Really though, I like this system:
Blob: A name for a large grouping of ships Fleet: A name for a large grouping of ships <insert name>: Another name for a large grouping of ships
Besides Zerging ofcourse. Zerging can be pretty much defined by what eve-radio sponsors the first saturday of every month. _________________________________________________________

I agree kinda with rells... BUT, I think what most people get annoyed with is when the enemy "Fleet" of say 20 ships is mustered just to engage a loan HaC, Af or whatever... At this point there is NO fleet battle.. Its just a blob after a gank. And you cant say thats fun cos we all know its not (exceptions for certain pilots obviously )
Fleet battles aint really my thing, which is why I took up piracy which is generally small roaming gangs... (or camping... bleh, we gotta make isk somehow) Though having said that VV was fun JQA 4t... urr actually no we lost

It seems to me that there's a fundamental difference between a 'blob' and a 'fleet' - based on differences in the composition and behaviour of the pilots. The latter being, as intially described, a group of players operating under one command and with various types of ships fulfilling different roles. Whether they 'gank' individuals or small groups who stray into 'their' space seems irrelevant to the definition.
Whereas a 'blob', to me at least, often consists of similar classes of 'ganged' ships flown by cowardly pilots who log out en-masse whenever there is the slightest danger that their opponents are gaining the upper hand - there are countless examples of this behaviour described throughout the forums, particularly around zero/low-sec choke points.
You know who you are - and whether you're in a fleet or blob!

I think the term blobbing in EvE mostly came from the old tactic of putting as many ships as possible on a gate to make it impossible for a hostile fleet (even of the same size) from jumping in without being completely torn to pieces becuase they were lagged out when loading up the system. The name blob came from the big assed blob you saw in the map.
I think after a while people simply got used to calling large fleets blobs.

I agree with you for the most part. However we do need to keep the solo player in mind or it becomes "if your in 0.0 you better be in a fleet or your dead" scenario. The biggest problems I find are: 1) All the SS'ing to offgrid SS with fleet battles; 2) The limited nature of the ingame gang; 1 gang leader and no granularity.
Some ideas I'd like to see put in for issue 1 are:
Tagging probes - A probe launched by an interdictor that tags/irradiates a ship so it shows up as a beacon in overview that can be warpd to. Say 5 to 10 mins for the effect. So if your gonna run you better keep running.
Scan probes - Ones that actually work off grid. A scan time of 5 to 10 seconds is what they should be not 90 seconds. Or having the scan times reflect the probes scan range, ie 192 AU probes = 90 seconds scan time, 48 AU probes = 30 seconds , 12 AU probes = 10 seconds and 3 AU probes = 5 seconds to analyze scan probe results.
Issue 2
Fleet Gang Hierarchy. The abilty to set up squads and squads leaders that would have gang warp controls for the squad. I.E. Fleet command controls the gangs warps but the squad commander can control his on squads warping ablities.
Apply the same idea to the tagging system (love the tagging system but runs into overview update issues during fleet battles)or some type linked targeting and fire control system for squad commanders.

Medium 1x C5L XLarge SB 3x Tech II extenders 1x Amplifier 1x Invulnerability field
