While browsing around I decided to check out the EVE Chinese website (Google Translation) and found a rather unintelligible translation of an article.

"Eve Online> Chinese name called, unpopular ongoing
Election Eve Chinese name, using undetectable undetectable numbers game, more opportunity to personally press conference in Beijing Eve!
...
Requests players from the following shortlisted Eve Online you think is best suited to the Chinese name...
It seems that there was a vote held to pick a new name for EVE itself! The part about "undetectable undetectable numbers" was a contest. EVE testers could use their account number when they voted for a chance to win a pass to an EVE News Conference in Beijing.
There were 10 name candidates, picked to better portray EVE in Chinese culture. The results (remember that they are very roughly translated from Chinese) follow.
Chinese Vote Results for the New EVE Name
Yes. If I understand these translations correctly, EVE will be known as "Star War" in China.
I can't help but wonder how close this new name is to what "Star Wars" (ie Mr. Lucas) is known as in Chinese, and if that had anything to do with its outrageously popular vote. Could this cause problems with the "Star Wars" trade mark, being a similar theme?
Also, what affects could this have on the "West's" perception of the EVE brand?

The whole @#$%&* chinese server is lame.
I really appreciette how the test server is going to be down before one of the biggest patches in Eve history to alpha the Chinese Server.
PRoposal to fix blobbing and make Charisma useful.

the "star wars" you got was an litteral translation. the actual star wars movie is called something else in chinese.

You get major problems trying to translate things into Chinese, so it's no surprise they had to change the name completely.

That's what I assumed. Though without knowing Chinese, its hard to say why that particular title was so popular. In the English translation, I liked most of the other candidates more.

i can read chinese, so i didnt use the translation :-)
the name for Starcraft sounds very similiar to what they had as star wars. (starcraft was "conflict amonst the stars" and star wars is "war among the stars").

TBH, it actually didnt sound that great in chinese :P Its short and sweet, but... eeh... it just feels a bit lacking, heh...

It is still called EvE. Maybe there isnt a name to name substitution for EvE. If using Japanese Katakana, I would pronounce it, ie-vie.

However several states in USA have cities named Eden, or the group of rivers in England/Scotland....
That being said I obviously cannot refute the possible reference to "Eden" from the bible.
Regardless the last thing I want is for this game to get filled with a bunch of Judaeo-Christian mythology and Dogma.

I have to say that I really, really doubt that that's the case - there are an estimated 85 million Christian Chinese.
However, I fully admit that CCP's careless use of a horrible mix of cultural imagery in their racial backgrounds makes me wince.

everyone needs a reference point/something to identify with, though it was not as blatent as in freelancer with the bretonians, rhinelanders etc (still a fun game)

Eeeh... i dont mind it being named EVE and all, since in relation to the backstory to EVE, it does make sense... it's a new world, where everyone started from scratch again, so it works pretty well in context in most places. Just that in China, Christianity isnt nearly as prevalent, so some people might not understand the reference if EVE was excatly translated, and the phonetic translation would be just kinda odd... So they just make a new name for it. Its done to a lot of things... like World of Warcraft.. Starcraft... a bunch of games got names that isnt quite excatly what it means in English, but it works well all the same :)
