I'd played Mankind for a couple of years and the game was clearly going down the tubes so lots of the veteran players there were looking for an alternative. We literally scoured the net looking for new MMO's to go and play together and all started applying for beta tests left right and centre.
I don't remember which one of us found Eve or where but there was a huge buzz about both Eve and Planetside. It quickly became clear that these were the two games we needed to focus on trying. As we'd all played MK together which was a persistant universe sci-fi MMO we all preferred something in a similar genre.
I beta'd Planetside for a few months, got into Eve in one of the latter stages of beta (4 or 5? can't remember now) and tried SWG pretty much as soon as it went gold.
It was Planetside that caught my eye at the time and I get very into playing that. I pretty much toyed with Eve during beta coming and going in between playing Planetside. Of all my group of friends from MK (many of whom still play Eve) I was pretty much the only one with the Planetside obsession though and the rest of them came to Eve as soon as it was released.
I came over to Eve in July 2003 when Planetside had already started to lose it's shine just a couple of months if that into release. Appart from a couple of 4-6 week breaks when I've had to focus on work rather than gaming I've been here non-stop ever since.

PC Zone UK - 2004 - 14 day trial
Bought magazine in May or so only started playing a few months later. Never looked back ever since!

Cant remember, it was back before the beta i 1st heard of it... stil have the emails from my (aborted) beta application...

Friend ive known for ages from school showed me it , shame he stopped playing last year and went to the game that shall not be named

i looked for a new mmo after linage II suxxage on www.mmorpg.com and found eve, play it now for two years with 4 other reallife friends 
and still enjoy it \ /

Was playing EnB, They announced that it was closing so my guild members started searching for a new game, EVE & SWG came up. I wanted to fly spaceships so I tried EVE and loved it..

Walked into GAME one day just canceled my NEOCRON account [dont ask  ]. Just happened to see a box under a pile ot other games looked on back. Decided to try the free trial period never looked back.
As a side note tho i must say back them i loveed sci-fi space ship type games so that helped me get into eve.
My favourate moment in eve was when i accidently agroed someone near a station in my vexor I got out with my vexor......just 
lost it later tho due to the old jump in point thing [you know the one sit at J.I.P wait for someone to jump in kill them before they catch up from the jump in lag].
HEHE i love eve and i praise the day i wondered into GAME and looked in the clearance box.

A friend of mine bought the game the week of release and said I should give it a shot. He'd always tried to get my into EQ, but I'm a sci-fi kind of guy, so he thought I'd like it. Well, he was right, and two weeks after release I had my own account.

I'm an Forum/Game admin for a game community, and had only ever been interested in FPS and such.
A friend there told me of EvE and at first I told him it wouldn't be my cup of tea.
Anyway he went on and on about it, so I went out and bought it, thinking I would only last for the trial month.
Oh how wrong was I.
