This is a question that is quite difficult to Google about, so I am asking your collective wisdom.
I am a fan of nice 3D graphics and space games. I joined EvE 2 weeks ago and was hooked like addicted to *****.
So I want to know are there other games with cool space graphics? I saw X3 and I think it has mode detail but I fall in love with the ambience and atmosphere of EvE. The level of immersion that EvE creates is unbelievable.

No. There are no other space games that come even close to EVE. The only thing even close was Earth and Beyound which has long since been closed down.

The only game I've seen that comes anywhere near close is Homeworld. I actually signed on my first time and asked myself if it was Homeworld.
But it's still not even close when you jack the graphics way up ^^

X3 is good but not really worth the 50 bucks IMO.
Homeworld is the best 3D RTS ever made in history. Period. Hell, the best RTS ever.
Freelancer is damn good fun too.
Try Elite also--google it, there are free java applets with the game emulated. Its 3D and has tens of thousands of star systems and hundreds of enemies.

Freelancer is a pretty good game.
But freelancer isn't nearly as complex as eve, and is really a single player game.
same basic gameplay however, fly around in space, do missions for npcs, shoot pirates, trade routes.

If you want to look at the 3D RTS then Nexus is supposed to be good, but havent tried it myself.

Nexus isn't an RTS--its a tactical space combat sim.
Its a linear RPG with a tactical combat system, basically. But its still quite awesome.

'Dark Space' is now in 'Open' Beta - but learning the UI that sucks... just like EvE did way back in the day when I first started.

Bah the old UI was 10 times better then the new junk. You could actualy move your scanner around and get a piper over missiles to easily see their range and smart bomb them. :)
The games gotten better but the UI has tanked.

There arn't any games that truly compare to Eve.
Freelancer would have to be the closest New game to it. I liked the 1player mission in it, but not really fun just existing
There is one game, if your looking for content over graphics... If your older you might actually remember it as well....
Wing Commander Privateer. Its an older game, came out around the early 90's. BUT there is a current fan-based project, using the Vega strike engine, to make it playable in XP. Google "Privateer Gemini Gold" and it will bring up the "historical Version" remake of the game. Its free to download and a good game to play when your not able to get on eve. The game has been fully redone, and can be played in whole, but they are still redoing a lot of the graphics in the stations, missionboards, characters, etc. Check it out, espically if you played it all those years ago....

Are you serious?
The old "threats" system was completely useless compared to the incredibly useful overview, and the blue scanner was junk--everyone I know just turned it off.
The old UI didn't have the ability to remove passive modules from your modules list, and it didn't have asset search. And there was no "show only overview settings" button on the scanner--thank god for that.
And now we even have market in space!

Bah market from space? I didnt have any problems docking so mixed on that one. Probably a good change, but eh. :) Your right that usefull change.
I didnt use the blue ball either, but the ability to move/re-arrange my scanner was a huge benefit so I didn't waste a huge chunk of prime space.
Let me move the overview and I will be happier. Better yet, let me move the modules back to the center of the hud instead of having silly hotbars wasting space I dont need. Oh and please please give me back the ability to highlight/identify missiles even if I cant target them any more! :)
As I said, the game has improved a lot but at a fairly steep cost. I still hate the fonts. ;)

I was talk about learning EvE's UI... When I first started EvE was very complicated..well If I try Freelancer or Nexus I have to start all over again and re-learn the UI. I wasnt talking about EvE's UI sucked or anything.

Freelancer hardly has a UI at all--there's like 4 farking buttons or something.
Nexus has a few more, but its nothing compared to EVE.

Im just looking to see something else until skills complete or Kali comes. I dont want to spend to much time learning another game cause EvE is my Primary.
So would you recommened Freelancer over Nexus? I want good graphics, good gameplay (single player) and easy to use UI/game overall.

Freelancer was an incredibly fun game. The mouse/keyboard control scheme was simply awesome. Don't get me wrong, I ain't hating on the joystick-control type games. I just really had fun with it.
As I recall, Freelancer was supposed to be a game much like EVE (conceptually, not functionally), but due to various things the scope of the game was cut down.

Freelancer was a merging of 2 ideas, Privateer 3 (in the mid/late 90's ) and Starlancer (2000ish), both coming from the guy who wrote the stories for Wing Commander 1-4(and prophecy I think).
I the intro, there was a good bit of talk about the war that takes place in Starlancer. The same sides etc etc. The Last quote from the Intro was (i think) "But we have not forgotten..." making you think that it was going to involve the origional game. You'll notice that nothing from the intro was seen in the later games. Microsoft must have cut it down a good bit, then tried to make money by putting it online to keep people playing it (think EVE but simplier w/ no plot and less player interaction)

Freelancer lasts longer. Once you beat Nexus, thats about it--you've won. Plus its older, and thus cheaper. It has LOADS of non-storyline content of all sorts, basically.

Looks like most agree that Freelancer is a better game over all. I'll have to try it out once I get some time off from playing EvE Although Nexus does look pretty damn fun. Maybe ill just buy them both just to try for a few days

Nevermind, Nexus looks better. I hate how freelancer you sit inside your ship to move.. I cant do that. Nexus ships models also look a lot better than Freelancers.

Well obviously, as Nexus is about 3-4 years newer.
They're different games.
Freelancer is an RPG/space sim similar to Elite or X2. Nexus is a tactical multi-ship combat simulator, with a linear storyline and about 20-something missions.

what?? you fly more than 1 ship at a time?? is Nexus hard to understand/control ships in space? Is it all 3rd person view? Can you learn the game in less than 2 hours?
This is why i always resort back to EvE... I already know everything...

Nexus is 3rd person and you can have 10+ ships in a fleet. Its not too hard to learn, but some of the missions can be incredibly aggravating if you don't know the trick behind them. Save often.

Its so weird to here the words 'Save Game'...I havenÆt heard that in years. I'll try out Nexus and see whatÆs it all about, I am expecting to have a hard time getting things figured out.

Nexus can be pretty fun, and don't worry too much about learning the system. The first few missions are Tutorials and will slowly reveal features to you as you need them. You also gain command of ships slowly, so that's not a big deal either. I'm about half way through and only command about 4 ships regularly.
Another thing about Nexus - it can seem aggravatingly hard at times. I like to have manual control of the ships and often find myself fighting with the AI, or wondering why they aren't using the weapons/systems I want them to. Just remember that range and power availability are a major factor in when your crews will use which weapons.
Other than that I have to say that the dialog / voice acting is some of the worst I have EVER heard in a game. Though I get the impression that it was done on purpose. But the game play more than makes up for even that. _____________________________________________________________________ Thar be Pirates

Edited by: Ominus Decre on 21/04/2006 22:24:01 Hegemonia: Legions of Iron
(look at the screen shots!)
It's an RTS space opera. If you like EVE's graghics and immersion that I would recomend Hegemonia:LoI. The game is buggy and the only patch released did not fix some issues. It's about 3-4 years old and should be obtainable in a bargin bin.
You colonize planets, research technology, micro manage each planet while generating capital to construction defenses and warships. Planetary bombardment is pretty wicked when you have a fleet of Battleships hammering on your enemies largest planet.
Good game and it's a MUST if you like EVE or Homeworld. I actually liked it a LOT better then homeworld.

Try Jumpgate, it's a 1st person sim kind of like Eve but it doesn't have the detail you get in EVE in the markets and such.
