Ive been mining at a large scale, but one thing drags it Down to shite... it takes forever. I dont have 2-4 hrs to mine everyday. Itsa f... drag. Usually i mine out 1 belt With 6 toons within 2-2,5 hrs. (1 orca, 1 freighter, 4 hulks).
From what ive seen, fewer and fewer mines now, it takes just too long. And New miners tend to be ganked as fast, cuz retrivers and covetors are shite easy targets.... so New miners are highrisk for just quit mining due to ganking and a everlast borring repetative mining. Also many miningcorps have trouble With getting miners to meet up when corp mining is issued.
At some point EVE needs to change the mining, either get T3 miners and with T3 orcas to speed Things up, or just reduce minetime or/and increase ore amount.
Something needs to be done to make mining more interesting and fun, cuz it SUCKS :D |

At least sum it up correctly.
"Make mining fun".
Feel free to make it take 100 times as long, but make it interesting!
Also why not on ship per ore type? Modular ships are t3 and not crusty crystal types you switch.

Something needs to be done to make mining more interesting and fun, cuz it SUCKS :D Mining does need to be change, but crashing the eve economy (read as :increasing ore amounts and dropping ship prices") is not the way to do it. It needs to be changed to require active user input to decrease the effectiveness of multiboxing/botting/afk mining. No profession should reward not being at your computer more than it does paying attention. Also, no mining ships are "easy" targets if the player is at their keyboard watching local and using d-scan. If you believe that, try ganking targets that are paying attention some time. How to fix mining:
Give it a minigame everytime the miner cycles akin to exploration. The asteroid now spews "ores" for you to click in space to pick up. It's a fool proof plan that worked with exploration!

Making mining faster would deplete belts quicker, so no I dont think mining needs an overhaul.
Personally I enjoy mining as a casual activity. I find it relaxing. But much like Hauling, if I get bored I go do somtheing else for awhile. If ALL you do is mine, then yes you are going to get bored.

The real time it take to mine minerals is what gives eve's mining it's value. If it was easy, if it was fast, everyone would do it... and the economy would suck like most other games. If you don't like how long it take to mine, there are things you can do that take less time and earn faster. Do those things and buy the minerals from people who have more time to mine than you. -á-á- remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not-á "afk" cloaking-á-

No impact at all versus a retriever if you are dropping directly into an orca or jet canning and MTU-ing and teh ship is way cheaper to buy and fit plus has more tank.
Basically Procurer/Retriever are the same ore per minute and only the Covetor gives higher yield.

I simply don't understand
Mining is an excellent pastime for those of us who find the rest of EvE to be over stimulating.
Ice mining used to be that outlet...spending countless hours watching ice blocks go from 10,000 units to 9,999....9,998 ohhh the joy :)
Recent changes have made ice mining far too intense for those with weak hearts.....so regular mining of the Giant SpodGäó is now recommended.
Please ensure your barges are not aligned to anything....try and stay at the warp in point as well....and as always safety in numbers....pack barges side by side. Also it is recommended that you ensure you fit for maximum yield....you don't want to lose out on any isk making opportunities.

I think most anti-mining people are aware that the AFK miners who have kids/demanding work/etc would just quit the game if mining got interactive and they had to pay 100% attention. Thing is the anti-mining types see that as a good thing. |

Don't worry, we're on it.
Highsec is owned by players now. Systems 0.5-1.0 are New Order Territory.-áAll miners and other residents of Highsec must obey The Code.-áMining without a permit is dangerous and harmful to the EVE community. See www.MinerBumping.com to learn more. |

CCP couldn't care less for mining. If less players mine, the ore price goes up and some new players will get into minig again for ISK.
Also they made some of the mining barges specially for been ganked by low cost frigates. It's content for this high-sec gankers. If you look at the kills of such a ganker you see they went to low sec, got killed a few times there and they got back in high-sec where they feel safe and CCP provided some targets for them. |

It doesn't need to be fun. Guess that would be close to impossible.
It needs to be meditative. Today it's... well, only bearable if afk. Some interaction would be needed. Doesn't need to be a fun interaction, but one where you can lose yourself in.
A change in a direction where you partly guide the laser manually might be an idea. Do that well and you might get double the output you have while doing nothing. Balancing required of course. |

Core (har har) problem of mining is the fact that it needs to take time. I am slightly doubtful whether any minigame could improve mining overall although it sure as hell could use with one regardless.
With that said - I dunno if anyone here follows the development of Limit Theory. This video is the latest one and is in fact about how mining will work there. The developer brings up the very problem of mining being boring/time consuming and has a first iteration on mining in this game.

"Fewer" players mining.
Because you literally can, if you had enough patience (or CCP data/resources) determine the amount of miners in New Eden at any given point.
And if you want excitement, get the hell out of Hi Sec. Try low sec or *le gasp* any of the 3 null sec mining options (Sov, NPC Null or Wspace)! |

Mine in low or null sec. Wait for the pirates to get you and either hero tackle them in your bait procurer or warp of triple warp stabbed. Or go Ninja mining ... which is knowing the pirate is there but mine an asteroid for about a minute at a time because that is what a good scanner needs to scan you down.
Another option ... scan a wormhole entrance and go solo mining gas or ore, never a dull moment because there will be sleepers or WH dwellers kicking you out.

'Everyone' is too generic. So let's assume people mine for 3 reasons:
1) enjoyment
2) make ISK
3) need minerals to build stuff
Now let's try to imagine how the option of illegal mining equipment would impact these 3 groups of people (remember, it's an option, you can still use the current equipment just fine):
1) no impact, unless you want to try the thrill of going suspect in highsec. could be fun for some, no?
2) more ISK if you're willing to 'up your game', less ISK if you're not. in other words, you can make more money if you're willing to 'outplay' your competitors. I assume this would make mining 'more fun' for some players at least
3) the most complex impact to imagine imo. I'm thinking the most significant impact would be people in low/null/wh mining more often. so more pvp opportunities maybe? would also give a boost to local industry maybe? many players are asking for that. finally, highsec ISK-making may indeed be reduced in favor of low/null/wh, maybe some players would 'migrate' from 'crowded' to 'underpopulated' regions, could be a good thing overall for the game |

For example, you can't teleport minerals at zero cost. So more minerals mined and consumed in null could cause less demand for minerals (and/or equipment) in Jita.
This COULD result in lower prices in highsec, but... less demand + less profit with the 'safe old mining equipment' could also result in less people mining in highsec so also LESS supply in highsec.
So less demand + less supply = who knows what would happen to highsec prices?

i haven't oversimplified anything; if you double the yield of minerals, the price will drop as you haven't changed demand. you're also correct that you can't teleport minerals at 0 cost. you've just made 1bn isk of minerals take up more space, which will increase shipping costs, further devaluing mining. if you're decreasing demand in jita, that also contributes to depressed prices, except that won't happen because it has been explained to death by people more eloquent than me why null sec imports so much of their stuff from jita.
except, you haven't changed demand so your equation is meaningless. all you've done is doubled supply, which leads to a guaranteed drop in prices of minerals.
being ganked without concord assistance doesn't make mining more fun, it makes it less fun so you REALLY haven't solved a single thing, much less the OP's issues. Also, there's already a solution to obtaining minerals at a faster rate; by not mining. |

An interesting discussion on GD, nice!
Let's leave mineral prices out for a moment, because some people would like them higher, others would like them lower. What is best is a matter of personal point of view. So let's talk minerals.
Supply = yield X miners X avg time spent mining
Also, supply = demand (assuming stock levels adjust after a while).
With double yield, demand would stay roughly the same or, probably, increase a bit because of easier overall availability of minerals. Say +10%. Which isn't bad for EVE, is it? People having more ships and POSs to have fun with - preferably blowing them up.
So if demand doesnt change much, higher yield means less miners and/or less average time spent mining.
So if you mine because you like it, nothing changes. Ok, also add a mini-game if you want, have fun!
OTOH, if you mine because you 'need to' for whatever reason but find it boring, you mine less (in highsec, you also need to be more 'on the ball' to achieve this).
Win for all?
Finally, why do you think being shot while mining in highsec always needs to be a 'gank'? Don't you think at least some highsec miners would enjoy the challenge of finding ways to evade danger in exchange of higher yield? Enjoy higher yields when they 'win', accept having their ship blown up when they 'lose'? Why do you assume this wouldn't be fun? |

CCP would have the figures, but I'm assuming total mineral stock fluctuations are much lower than total mineral consumption.
So supply = demand + stock increase (or - stock decrease) but stock increase/decrease is much lower than demand, so yeah supply = demand.

except that simply isn't true, as i've pointed out, because supply does not equal demand and vice versa.
If I'm trying to fill up 10 production lines, I need X minerals, and i don't care how much the miners are mining, i'm still going to need X minerals. my X minerals isn't influenced by how much miners are, or are not mining.
If people started mining less, i still need X minerals, not Y minerals where Y < X. supply =/= demand.
The same happens if miners start mining more. I'm still going to need X minerals, not Z minerals where Z > X. because once again, supply =/= demand. |

Dave has been right in his posts against his argument.
Infact we have seen been in a situation you are trying to point out. Currently trit is around 4 isk. There was a time it was around 2 isk. People don't have fewer isk because trit is twice as expensive as it used to be. Most don't even care how much trit, or the ship costs. They have their ways to make isk to PVP and that's that.
Speaking of ships I believe you made a comment about eve players not having a never ending stockpile of minerals. Look at the after effects of battleship changes on that point.

I would be open to changing mining but I don't want to be some click intensive activity. When I mine it is to kick back and unwind, usually after work, sometimes durinf a movie. Why would anyone create a task that is so mind numbingly boring that only the insane would do it at their keyboard, and then condemn and punish those who do it the only way it can be sanely done by making them easy targets for suicide ganking? The whole system is broken from the ground up.
I would like to want to mine. What ever happened to ring mining?
Pretty much, this.
The entirety of the time I spend at the keyboard while mining is for gank prevention. You know there's a problem when the only reason to play the game while playing the game is to make sure no one is blowing you up for not playing the game.

The only thing mining needs are proper effects and scaling them. I find it very lame that Hulk lasers are much of a hissing penpoint lasers than any other ship(/module).
It really should scale toward more impressive effects as you get better mining equipment. The current hissing laser would be good for, say mining bargers, but exhumers should really have a bit of oomf in them. |

The simplistic high school market analogies do not work in the real world never-lone EVE :D
A few minor points that throw a spanner in the equations: - reprocessing also provides minerals - many people mine semi afk while doing other things in real life so the opportunity cost is very low - for some minerals transport becomes a non-trivial part of the cost - there are stockpiles of tens of thousands of some ships (procurers for example) dating back to a time they could be produced very cheaply meaning these ships sell on market for well below actual current production cost - the market in most minerals is not deep enough to circumvent substantial price manipulation by bigger players (alliances) |

I have to disagree there. There seem to be a *lot* of people who want to play "afk mining on-line".
Mining needs to be a lot more involved, and more profitable (this by means of decreasing the amount of mining significantly). This will happen eventually when CCP removes Concord from the game, so that may be why they aren't doing anything with it. |

nor does ratting. also an activity not requiring interaction for a short period of time doesn't make it an afk activity, as demonstrated by the fact that there are very un-afk steps in your terrible example. |

How I described it, is exactly how it happens. A large group of people involved in an activity which requires about 30s actions for every 30mins worth of AFKing.
They are large swarms. They are afk. The fields last hours to deplete in most cases, because though Ice Bets got reduced, they are still enormous.

Indeed. I undocked in Gelhan, which has an ice belt I occasionally use and was just out of station when I saw this amazing, huge creature undock right behind me. I had never seen it before in 4 years ingame and it was in fact a bit startling.
It looked like a tight wad of insects and reminded me of a female cockroach with hundreds of babies hanging on.
I zoomed in and realized it was a wad of no less than 60 Mackinaws, all undocked simultaneously. All the same Corp. All toons founded the same day. They turned in lockstep and warped off in a wad together to the ice belt, and had it cleared out in about 20 minutes, leaving nothing for anyone else. My communiques in Local to them were not answered.

no, it's not a pimp mackinaw, it's a standard t2 fit mackinaw with a 125m implant. (139 ice not 142 ice per hour if you use a 18m implant instead, which is still basically the 140 i quoted). again, the fact you think it's "pimp" in order to achieve that demonstrates that you don't actually know what you're talking about. unless you have a very loose definition of "pimp", because i certainly don't consider a t2 fit to be pimp.
you can pretend i'm protecting a vested interest all you want. i'm not, i'm just sitting here telling you to stop lying. I have a strong dislike for liars.
the root is not that mining is a low interaction activity; the root is that it scales very well with multiple accounts unlike ratting, or missioning where the reward is split and the addition of additional characters is logarithmic not linear like mining. In addition to this there's the unsociable nature of mining; to maximise your return it's in your interest to have 0 interaction with other players, avoid being ganked, avoid sharing your belts to minimise time moving between belts etc. large fleets of antisocial unresponsive players are due to those factors, not the low interaction required for mining.
if you increase the interaction you won't reduce the number of large fleets, you'll just increase the use of people using third party software to duplicate actions in order to control several accounts at once. the reasons for large fleets will remain even if you had to interact with your miner at the end of every cycle. |

False. The reason for proliferation of multiboxing miners is because it is so easy to do and requires very little activity from even one player. The risks are so small as to be negligeable. The characters also have very narrow and relatively quick skill requirements. The profits are excellent and each character can PLEX itself easily over the course of a month.
Its you who are lying when you try to present the problem with mining as anything else than the following: Its too easy to do, while doing actually very little at all (ie:afking), the risks are negligeable, the profits are very good for 5s of activity every 15mins, and the characters quick to train and can fund their own plex. |

well i've already pointed out that multiboxing afk ratters is easier to do and requires even less activity from the players. so why don't people undock 60 of those at a time? oh right yes, every reason i listed. especially when you consider that ratting is at least twice, if not three times as lucrative as mining.
the profits from mining are not excellent, they're abysmal (and pointing this out has resulted in krixtal stalking me all over the forums whining when i post). mining is one of the lowest paid activities in eve, calling the profits "excellent" is like calling a 300lb person "light". it's going to take a miner roughly 20 hours or so to earn itself a plex, plus a bit more to cover the orca's plex, vs the incursion runner earning his plex in 4-5 hours.
I've not commented on the difficulty of mining. i never said it was easy or hard. it's as hard as every other activity in eve, lock something and hit f1, that's how eve works for pretty much every activity that involves flying a ship except maybe exploration because :minigame:. you do very little in incursions, too. you hold ctrl, click a few times then hit f1 every so often... exactly the same as mining. the risks are also negligible with that too, you have a bunch of logistics pilots, ****, it's safer than mining.
you have a very skewed perception of mining, perhaps you should do a bit more of it to straighten out your perceptions. |

It is exactly the ease of running a multibox mining fleet due to LOW INTERACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS (ie: 5s activity per 15mins required per account, rest can be afk) which makes it plausible. Yeah. A liar. Just what I expected.
In HIGH-SEC, the low interactivity requirements, extremely low risks and good profits from Ice Mining are conducive to multibox afking.
Afk multibox ratting in high-sec will NOT produce more profit than high-sec afk multibox Ice Mining will.
Which brings us to the crux of my point, and where you failed, utterly.
That it is exactly the LOW INTERACTIVITY required in Ice Mining, as weighed against the negligible risk and the sizeable profit, that is the core root of this problem.
The LOW INTERACTIVITY required results in about 4.8mil ISK, for as little as 5s activity per 15min cycle, per account.
That challenges even non-high-sec afk multibox ratting, especially considering the almost nonexistant risk. And ESPECIALLY because if you are actually so stupid as to afk-rat, you are just asking to lose ALL your ships.
You failed. Next time, maybe try being honest instead. You got caught in your own dishonesty. Typical.
As to the profitability of high sec afk multibox ice mining: At 4.8mil per 15mins (5s activity), that comes out to 125 loads. For those 125 loads, it takes 1875mins (31.25hrs) of AFKing and 625s (10.41mins) of activity on site. Roughly thats about 1hr of AFKING and 20s of activity per day (assuming a 30 day month) to PLEX the account.
1hr of AFK. 20s of activity, per day, to PLEX.
Everything beyond that, is profit. |

Seems to me the two main reasons for objecting to this sort of mining are: 1. i want to mine and these people are stealing all the good rocks 2. i want to impress the other kids at school with how awesome I am at EVE and these AFK miner dudes make it look to easy/nerdy and ruin my street cred
neither of which effect me in the slightest ... so you guys go AFK mine as much as you want.

I think we need to make it less multi-box friendly, maybe by making it so intensive and involved for individual players that using 6 accounts to do it would just be overwhelming. :]
I have no specific suggestions, though. I'll think about it and come back later.

OK, lets try requiring more player interaction. "Target rock and do something else for a few minutes" is boring. Have the activity require my attention, at least as much as ratting. I have to find targets, lock them, shoot them, loot, them, etc. Have more steps in mining Make asteroids have veins inside of them that you have to scan out and target with your miners, maybe? No profession should reward not being at your computer more than it does paying attention. Also, no mining ships are "easy" targets if the player is at their keyboard watching local and using d-scan. If you believe that, try ganking targets that are paying attention some time.

Mining definitely needs a mini-game -- but i suggest it be that you have to hold your mining lasers on target for a set period of time or the rock destabilizes and explodes damaging your ship. This would have the added benefit of making it hard to multi-box as the target would be different for each rock. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

At some point EVE needs to change the mining, either get T3 miners and with T3 orcas to speed Things up, or just reduce minetime or/and increase ore amount.
Something needs to be done to make mining more interesting and fun, cuz it SUCKS :D

1hr of AFK. 20s of activity, per day, to PLEX.
Everything beyond that, is profit.
Now where it gets real, is if you are doing this with say 6 accounts. The thing that happens there, is that that doesnt mean you have to spend 6 hrs afk mining to plex them, no, its still just the same 1 hr per day. Only your necessary activity gets multiplied. So instead of spending 5 sec every 15 mins unloading/retargetting, you spend 35s total. 35s, and then AFK for another 15mins.
So in 1hr of AFK and 2min 20s of activity, per day, you PLEX 6 (SIX) accounts, simultaneously.
Everything else, is profit, and from 6 miners pulling 4.8Mil per 15mins, that adds up substantially.
If, for example, you afk mined for 2hrs per day, you could PLEX a total of 12 (TWELVE) accounts in one month.
Go ahead. Show me someone who can afk-rat for 12 PLEX a month, on 2hrs a day AFK and 2mins20s activity.
(Goes without saying these figures are concerned only with the actual and specific activity of high-sec afk multibox ice mining)
This thought has already been discounted more than once in this thread alone. No one can AFK for an hour on a berg that only last 6 minutes tops in high sec ...especially not a multi-boxer who has to work multiple disappearing bergs. You are either delirious or have never been in a mining fleet of any size. Your posted theory only works on paper.. and cannot be applied to the real eve world because those conditions do not exist. The ice belts in high sec do not even last a whole hour. -á-á- remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not-á "afk" cloaking-á-

Turning mining into something entertaining is going to be a really really difficult task.
Most of the entertaining things in eve come out of socialization or competition. Mining doesn't really make use of either, and there's not really anything I can think of to change that.
The issue could continue being ignored and brushed aside. It's not entirely horrible as it is, but it won't solve the fundamental issue that mining isn't fun, and remains probably the #2 reason new players quit. (right after #1 losing **** they can't afford)
I think the best solution is to just automate it. Make it more about management and application of resources. To be honest, if what I hear about bots really are true, most of the mining done in game is already automated anyways.
That said, I don't think it's an idea CCP is willing to entertain. Implemented improperly or with bugs, a new mining system could really detrimentally impact eve's economy. Which is such a critical part of the game that changes need to be made very carefully.
Which is why, mining, like combat, (Which needs far better tactical-level maneuvering decisions) are things I don't think will be improved or changed for the better in Eve. The current playerbase is too used to them, change is always seen as bad - especially when not outright necessary, and making good changes are difficult. |

Mining should not be that entertaining since it's the lowest player skill (not "pilot" skill) way to earn ISK. Mining is there to take you out of the initial ISK rut as a brand new player (depends on your play style), and to drive to do riskier and more exciting things in EVE.
In some ways, mining being boring is by design.
And as far as risks go.. go mine Veldspar in your Venture in a rookie system and I doubt anyone would want to gank you. The ganks come in with greater risk/reward mining (as it should).

the problem is.
how can you make mining fun?
you can have the rocks explode into a can spew like those exporation sites? no thanks! you can have some sort of mini game like the hacking things? noo please you can have weird and wacky things like deployables and stuff to clutter belts and increase micromanagement? cluttering belts maybe ok (but pretty pointless, way to stop cloak scouts??) as long as not collidable, but mining doesnt need clickfest, thats a way to end it forever
making it faster is the exact opposite to making it clickier. Currently its just boring.
If you could empty a belt in 15 minutes with a couple ships it would be even worse as only the few who are on at dt would ever see belts, 90% of the player base including all them newbro's who are trying to make a buck before moving on would never get a chance (to make a buck and/or see how much mining demands 2 screens with a movie playing on the second)
the challenge with mining is there isnt really a legit way to make it more "fun" its like mining in real life. you dig and dig untill you find what you want then you take it away and refine it. Mines last for years, decades its a long drawn out affair and unfortunately it has to be like that in eve too |

What if people could no longer be antisocial and rely on their own personal multi-box alt fleet but had to work together with others, including security personnel, in order to carry out a successful mining op, perhaps what makes mining so boring isn't the act of mining itself, but the lack of suitable threats which keep the miner alert.
It seems like a lot of the things that make EVE boring are due to allowing players to go at it themselves and not have to work together with others, which in theory doesn't seem very "EVE-Like". But I guess it makes CCP money so it's tolerated, even encouraged.
Also their is a way to make mining less time consuming. |

In some ways, mining being boring is by design.
And as far as risks go.. go mine Veldspar in your Venture in a rookie system and I doubt anyone would want to gank you. The ganks come in with greater risk/reward mining (as it should).

I don't think anybody would seriously argue mining should be more rewarding. It's plenty rewarding given how low risk it is. The complain is that it's pretty boring, and that's really quite true.
It would be cool if mining always gave a fixed amount but allowed you to play a mini game for a 5-10% bonus per minute (or 5 or whatever it takes to balance it so it's lucrative but doesn't make non-game mining completely pointless). This would at least give miners who aren't watching Netflix etc. a chance to do something more interesting than just watch the recycle on their mining mods. |

Mining mini-game sounds good. I think non-multibox miners would enjoy that, especially if the minigame can yield greater rewards if you play it well. Multiboxers would be utterly screwed however.
I dont know for sure which is the more numerous form of miner, but I think multiboxers are a majority in terms of who is bringing minerals into the economy, seeing as a single multiboxer accounts for 2-6 single account miners.
If there was an independant mining minigame per rock, it would make multibox mining defunct over-night. Their activity relies on being able to control all ships with one click.
Economic implications would be huge. With, at my estimate, atleast 75% of mining accounts suddenly disappearing as a result of being reduced to one toon per mining player, instead of 2-6, mineral prices would sky rocket.
Furthermore, I think mining multiboxers account for a huge market in PLEX. As a result of 2-6 toons per mining multiboxer dissappearing, PLEX prices would plummet.
So as cool as it would be for game content, the peripheral effects imo make it unfeasible to make a mining minigame.
Reducing mining cycle timers doesnt do anything either.
My primary suggestion, would be naturalising Ice Belts with other Ore Anomalies, by making them a random, sweeping, unpredictable spawn. ------------ |
