Edited by: Irwin on 24/04/2006 19:29:41 Ok heres the deal...
I buy a BPO for 1.1billion, am happy and when i come to collect i find out the num-nut has put it on escrow for 110mill (right plonker :P) so i collect quickly before my net crashes again.
I log back on after food and was about to transfer the difference in isk when i noticed the guy has a sec status of -7.5!
Now i have a problem.. i want to keep the cash (doesn't everyone) though my conscience said pay up! Yet when noticeing the sec status and guessing what he has done to others i have second thoughts...
Am i being naive in thinking i should pay up and not lower myself to the pirates level.... or should i keep the money knowing he would prob do the same thing in the tides where reversed?
HELP!
Irwin
P.s I am posting with my main and welcome the guy to defend himself, this is a genuine plea for help and honestly believe if the tides where turned he would keep the cash (have sterotyped him as a pirate).
edit: have not been able to log in a speak with him as my net is ammazingly unstable atm.. thought a new router would have fixed it

I'd keep it. It's purely his fault for making such a mistake, and mistakes like that don't happen often.

Edited by: Kel Shek on 24/04/2006 19:33:50 personally I'd quadruple check that it indeed was a original not a copy and such, get the print into high sec... and assuming all was kosher, (the BP was as expected) once back in high sec,(of course, that only applies if the transfer wasnt' already in high sec) I'd pay the rest.
might jerk their chain a little, but the intent would always be ultimately to give the proper amount.

If you're gana do it do it becuase you want to.Not becuase hes pirate. You're just trying to find a crutch to stand-on,and the fact that hes a pirate is not one.If you want to go ahead and be 'ebil' and take it then go ahead. But don't use the 'he was a pirate defence' if you would have given a carebear the rest of the money. _____________________ CCP where are our t2 shield power relays? |

Yes in a way i am trying to justify keeping teh cash.. your right. In situations like this thats always the prob.
Thought i honestly would have given him the cash had he not been a pirate, i've always tried to keep myself above board on the conscience side of things.

Do you plan on long term with the guy? no screw him or get something in exchange for it. a 2nd copy maybe?

Edited by: Irwin on 24/04/2006 19:37:48 It is a BPO.. check that before i claim any escrow
This is just a 1 off trade... not met the guy before and prob wont meet him again (unless i fall asleep while on autopilot :D)

I admire the honesty, and have been in this situation myself.
Treble check
It is likely to be a tech1 missile / ammo bpo masquerading as a tech 2 one.
And if it is real, you got lucky - keep it and don't pay it back. Justification: - There are 900 other people just waiting for this type of mistake to occur and if it was you who made the mistake you would never get the isk. There are plenty of mechanisms in the escrow system that make it almost impossible to make this kind of mistake. Sadly, people still do.

It has nothing to do with whether he's a pirate or not.
You either do the right thing, or you do the wrong thing. However, the "wrong" thing can be very profitable in this case. Decide your morals for yourself.
Him "being a pirate" is not a justification.

If it's someone I'd know, I'd pay up. After telling everyone about it.
If it is someone random on escrow who's made a mistake? Their problem, not mine.

Irwin, you're the typical carebear.
"I feel guilty" whaaa!
I'll defend this supposed pirate. I think you should give him his ISK back, not doing so makes YOU a bad person. God forbid you become a bad person...
In fact, i'll go one step further... you become a griefer by not giving him his money back! hahah! That's right, a Griefer!
Irwin = Griefer. Everyone will know to avoid you and your reputation will be ruined.
Give the pirate his ISK back so he can, in turn, use it to buy battleships to gate snipe you with. Not doing so would be griefing on your part. You don't want to be known a griefer now do you?
Once you start down that path... there's no telling how far you'll fall Irwin.

If he has been around eve for any significant amount of time he's prolly already written if off as a big fat stupid expensive mistake and if he hasnt then hes tha one beeing naive
you hear stories liek this every once and a while and typically the general feeling is not one of sympathy for tha guy who didnt double triple and quadruple check his escrow

If you want to keep the money, then keep it. If not, give him his ISK. But don't **** around by justifying that you're keeping it because he's a pirate. I don't have a problem with escrow scammers, besides the fact that they spam escrow, but in all aspects, if you don't give him your ISK, you are now a bad guy. A villian. But don't try to justify it with false pretenses we all know aren't true. --------------- My views do not reflect the views of my corp, or my own views. |

Something else to consider:
Where did he get this? It is possible to be -7.5 and NOT be a griefing pirate scumbag (anti-pirate etc). It is POSSIBLE that he is simply selling off a corp asset that isn't needed anymore (change in direction, can get production done cheaper/ less hastle etc etc)

Everything in EVE, even trade, is PVP. A player who doesn't take advantage of another player's mistakes isn't playing to win. The real question is weather or not your relationship with the other character is worth the ISK. The movie where John Cusack is chased relentlessly by a paperboy for $2 comes to mind.

Piracy is just as valid a profession as mining.
It is not an excuse to violate your honor.
Thus, you either keep your honor and lose 900 million, or lose some honor but keep 900 million. Its a choice. There's no justification.

That's not all you get though, if you choose option A you get:
1. Your "integrity"
Whereas choosing option B will result in:
1. 900 million ISK. (That's 900,000,000 for those of you who like large numbers)
2. The knowledge that you got 900m ISK for free.
3. Bragging rights about getting 900m ISK for free.
4. Anything else you can do with 900m ISK without spending it.
I like option B ________________________________________________

I'd probably give the money to the pirate. I am too nice of a guy to screw somebody like that.
Although you should message him about it regardless what you are going to do. Who knows, maybe he figured he screwed up and written off the amount. Then you can have a clear conscience and 900,000,000 ISK.

Irwin, have you ever thought that you might worry too much what others think of you?
If you are concerned with strangers opinions of you, you might want to consider that if you give back that 900 million, maybe more people will think of you as 'dumb' as opposed to 'Honorable'
Also, consider the longterm... are you going to be playing Eve a long time? With 900 mill in your back pocket, you'll have an easier life than most, a smart player can make 900 mill last a long time...
Or, you can give the money back (probably causing bemused amazement to the pirate) and feel good at least for a little while, until you become short on isk - ironically probably after losing a nice ship to a pirate.
Like other podpilots have said, cut the cr*p, keep the money, and smile at a lucky break - and while some people might claim you lack honour, at least no-one will be thinking of you as a fool.

Oh, okay then, thanks AE.
Under light of new information, a new opinion is warrented.
Since both parties are involved in the mass circle-jerk that is T2 production, under the circumstances, it would be best if 'those pennies' get tossed into my isk-wallet instead of the pirates.
It can be said with a straight face that this course of action would indeed be the honourable course to take.

"He's a pirate" Is a perfectly fine excuse.
Pirates in eve are the Murderers and Thieves of real life, even when you are not a roleplayer, but just a carebear, it doesnt make much sense to give "your enemy" or "criminals" more money then you need to, just so he can be even more aggressive against you and your law abiding kind.

There is a chance that he didn't even notice and still hasn't noticed. Maybe 900 mill is nothing to him. Maybe he thinks that you didn't notice because 900 mill is nothing to you.
I'd wait and see if he contacts you about it or not. If he doesn't either he wrote it off as his own dumb mistake or he didn't notice. If he does notice and he contacts you then I'd claim total innocence and then, maybe, pay him back

id give the money back as a point of honer
reason being there are some pirates that are honerable and he could be one you could find that his entire pirate circle gives you the no kill treatment be able to go into areas and not get podded by there snipers and gate camps.
then again you could give the money back and he could just pod you next time he sees you. but you will still have kept your honer

I'd sell the bpo then convo him and say you want to buy something else off him.
If he agreed I'd hope that the default maximum amount of isk in your wallet appeared in the trade box whenever you tried to buy the item.
Then I'd constantly flash the 990 million profit you made in the trade window until he got sick and logged off/local reaches triple figures.
For additional amusement I'd click on the yes/no button to complete a trade too.
See how many times you can do this before he tries to catch you out by putting an item in the window and clicking yes himself.

Interesting problem.
I suppose it comes down to what one of the other posters said, what will make you happy or comfortable. It is just a game, but you also struck a deal. You've already gone past the momentary glee of such a stroke of luck. Now is the realization that you haven't really kept your word, have you?
The solution is simple. Be true to your own character and beliefs whatever they may be. How the seller obtained the item, makes little difference to the deal you struck. I really don't think scammers and such are a happy bunch. A real pirate in the game is roleplay.

Lets analyze what has transpired here:
You thought you were buying a BPO for 'X' isk
Instead, somebody made a mistake and so you bought said BPO for 'Y' isk
Hence you realized your mistake and then your concience forced you to publicly disclose this OBVIOUS Mistake of GIGANTIC PROPORTIONS to the rest of the universe.
Then you received many replies about what to do...
Pretty much sums it up, eh?
The answer is quite obvious really...GIVE ME THE BPO

so yes, by your own words, this is the pvp game where sec status doesn't matter, and this is the exact reason why the guy should NOT give the rest of money.

All Joking aside, I think you should give the man his loot. By what you have said and the amount of anquish you have put yourself through over the issue I think you would not enjoy spending the ill gotten gains of this man's folley. Be honest with him. Tell him that you were tempted to keep it becuase you percieve him as a pirate but that your concience won't allow it. Don't make any conditions for the return of his money. Take the high ground and simply send it back. The relief this guy is going to feel once he gets his loot back will make him and his friends your allies for life.

Something similar happened with me, but i was the one buying. I got something for 20 Mil instead of 200 Mil.
To me this is a different type of ruining someones gameplay to killing there ship. So, we agreed on a settlement figure. which suited both parties. Its not my fault he messed the Escrow up, yet i know these things can happen. So i ended up paying 165 Mil for something that was supposed to be 200 Mil.
Personally this is what i think you should do Irwin. Your still taking advantage of his mistake, yet not leaving him with nothing -----------------------------------------------

Did you agree a price? Then pay it.
The man's sec status could have been caused by pod killing enemy's in low sec (negative standings but no war) but is not relevant to how you choose to behave. The question is not whether he is a pirate or not.
The question is, are you?

To the OP:
Ask yourself:
Taking his sec status in account with his style of play, would he reimburse you if such a mistake was made on your part?
Probably not, he'd be on the forums bragging about how he scammed some carebear.
I'd keep the ISK.
Maybe he looted this BPO through his pirating actions, so he definitely does not deserve the ISK in that case...

Edited by: Jacinto Naysmith on 25/04/2006 12:32:26 Using his sec status as an excuse to keep the money is just a rationalization to convince your self that you can take the money and keep a clear conscience. 900m isk or taking the moral high ground, they're mutually exclusive. Personally I don't know what I'd choose.

If I make the "mistake" of jumping into a system with a pirate in it I'm not usually given a second chance and have quite often been podded for my troubles. By the same token if he made a mistake in escrow I wouldn't pay him a penny. The fact that he is a pirate makes a difference. If a drug dealer dropped $10,000 in real life I'm quite certain that very few people would be rushing to get it back to him.

If so, build one and pod the pirate in it. I'd laugh so hard.

Actually the moral high ground is still with Irwin if he keeps the money. By keeping it he is dealing a financial setback to piracy and if he gives it back then he is in fact supporting piracy and directly sponsoring future deaths of many.
Keep it because of his security rating. Because of his security rating you know for sure that if you were in a reversed situation with you in a faction battleship he would have no qualms trying to take you out and causing you a loss of 900M.
But on the other hand if you have easily identifiable friends whom he may attack to get back at you then I would give it back if you want to keep these friends. But if your corp does not care about threats then I would keep it.

Despite what some people here think, keeping the money, whether the guy's a pirate or not, keeping the money would make you a bad guy, which I have no problems with. But do NOT try and justify this with "He's a pirate" because that's a load of BS, and maybe he bought the character who was a pirate, and is trying to raise his sec up, or he was fighting an unoffical war in low-sec(Happens), or maybe other things. So either you're a rich bad guy, or a poor good guy. But not a rich good guy. --------------- My views do not reflect the views of my corp, or my own views. |

We don't know that he is a pirate, only that he is low-sec (unless I missed something). If he can be confirmed to be a noob-killing nutcase, keep it. And stay out of low-sec. However, if there is any doubt, you must give it back, even if you think he wouldn't if your positions were reversed. Do unto others and all that.... ---------- Go here: http://www.student.ru.nl/martindevillers/tk8_outgame.html |

Unless he asks very nicely I would keep it. Why should you do all this work going through moral dillemas when it was his mistake. I think that since you posted this here you should at least require him to play his part and post here his thank you and say what a swell guy you are. He will still try harder than normal to kill you if he gets a chance anyhow.
