Equating miner ganking to PVP is like equating hitting a punching bag to actual boxing.
I did all of the tutorial missions. Then I did the SoE epic arc. Asked for help to defeat Dagan. Then started doing missions.
Nowadays I explore and do combat sites in lowsec. I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

Third attempt 2007: did few tutorial missions, used gate, lost direction, got into low-sec, popped, quit. It took couple hours.
Forth (successful) attempt, 2009: tutorials were good, so I finally got a clue - what the heck I was doing? Then started to do missions, 3 weeks later I was in Dominix. |

Still talking to a few of them from time to time. Good days indeed.

I skipped the tutorial, because it was pretty meaningless in 2006, and derped around the tutorial system for a couple of days, mining veld with my civilian mining laser and shooting rats with my mighty civilian railgun. Day 3, I realised that EVE had more than 1 system in it because someone in local showed my how to put gates on my overview (they weren't on by default in those days).
I did L1 missions for a couple of days, then told my agent to shove it when she gave me that garbage hauling one. By then I'd accumulated enough ISK and SP for a LML Kestrel, (with only 2 empty slots!), and I was collecting pirate logs from belt rats, then following them to the 1/10 plexes for more rats to kill. Those plexes were broken though because the bosses dropped loot with a weird name that didn't even appear on the market so you couldn't sell them I just reprocessed those pieces of junk. Who wants a "c-type" anything?
On my way to collect some mods for the Kestrel, I unwittingly flew through lo-sec and got instapopped by a pirate. I guess he looked at my tragic fit, because he convo'd me and asked "Alt or noob". After I worked out when I meant, I explained that I was a "noob" and had only been playing a few days. He gave me a little advice and also 10M ISK.
This was before invention, so meta 4 loot was worth a lot. Around my 8th or 9th day I found a meta 4 shield boost amp, which I sold for 23M ISk - just about tripling my NAV! I used the money to buy a Caracal (OMG THE POWER!!!!!). When I tried to train the skillbook, a message popped up telling me YOU GOTS TO PAY NOW, so I subbed.
I used the (T1 AB/passive fit) Caracal to make little forays into lo-sec to run the first 1-2 rooms of some of the 4/10s in gallente lo-sec. My DPS was so miserable that I had to kite, and it took ages. I didn't realise that they were supposed to have a cool loot drop at the end; they were just a convenient source of rats for me.

That wasn't the lofty scam. The lofty scam was to get the missioner victim to join your NPC alt's fleet "to help me out pls I can't kill Rachen Mysuna pls help", then once he's busy with the to invite another alt/buddy with an active wardec into the fleet. The fleet rules at the time meant that the perp was included in the dec while he was fleeted with you. Then the victim could be aggressed and killed without CONCORD interfering.

I just started a new alt and I am being much more sensible about it. Focusing on base piloting skills and frigate skills alone. I am not even going to train him to Destroyers 3 for a while so I won't be tempted to get a Cruiser. |

So I got in my shiny new Cormorant, fit it to cover anything that could possibly happen (it was a terrible fit, but I thought it was great) and as luck would have it, the first thing I found was a wormhole! I got hooked into Eve after the PL Revenant kill made news. I had read about the game from time to time as big events broke into the wider nerd press, but for some reason last July I figured I had to check this stuff out. Basically my trial period was learning stuff in a methodical manner, that's just how I roll. This character started off as a FW alt (I wanted to try it out, but it was against E-Uni policy) and ended up becoming my main. Banish plump Jack, and banish all the world. |

I did: - the tutorials for the agents in Jouvulen system (december 2009) - mined in Ekura system (next door to Jouvulen) first in Bantam, next in Osprey to get iskies for more ships. - scanned for stuff, found mostly stuff too difficult for my n00b fits - at age of 3 days took a Heron I got from some tutorial to a wormhole, loved the scenery and the excitement of being in lawless space, found some sites and the npcs shot the heron in one of them. I returned to high sec via the bookmarked wormhole. - realized wormhole combat is not for me yet - hauled Trade Goods with Badger (and later Badger II) between Caldari high and low sec to make more iskies. - lost a Badger II filled with Trade Goods in low sec to some pirate. - shot some belt rats, and did some missions for some Caldari agents - scanned some more, the sites still too hard for my n00biness - started the SoE epic arc - tried to Burn the Hive for three times, losing two cormorants in the process and finally stopped doing the arc after almost losing third cormorant. (I finished the arc much later with a drake) - flew a bantam towards null, but I think I got scared midway with too many people in local and returned to high sec after mining one bantam full of wonderful low sec ore. (this might have happened before SoE arc attempt) - After that I did some high sec mining in Osprey again, this time in Amarr space - returned to station and decided to quit mining for the day, took a look at station services in one of the stations and saw a nice looking corporation office there and sent my application to them. - Soon after (around that 14th day - I had already paid for subscription though) I became a member of that corporation and started to really learn about fitting ships and flying missions.
Oh, and I think I loved EVE all the time, even while mining, even though mining felt... wrong. |

-Did most of the tutorials. -Read some forums posts. Discovered how rude and sardonic the community is. Got rather shocked. -Read one of the "Methods of Torture" chronicles. Got rather horrified. -Found out that Goonswarm was huge because it recruited members from a pre-existing community outside the game. Which ruined my idea that EVE was a sandbox in which everybody had an equal Darwinistic chance of building a tribe and empire from within. Got pretty disappointed. -Joined a corp of drunken British guys on the other side of the pond. Could hardly understand the local dialect, the game jargon, and the 1337 speak. Got pretty puzzled, but had a lot of laughs and learned the game through corp chat.

Like most people, did the tutorial and then went into the SoE epic arc, and of course banged by head against the guy with the silly tank (Dagnan?).
Tried to join Gentleman's Agreement, they told my I was too low-skill, and to try Eve University. Probably took several days to get through the Eve-Uni red tape before getting accepted, which brought me up to about 14-days.
After joining Eve-Uni I learned a ton. Now, with limited in-game time available to me, I spend time bouncing around between incursions, wormhole pvp, lowsex pvp, farting around with Uni wardecs, and occasionally missioning, with a steadily decreasing amount of null-sec exploration.
If I had just a touch more time, I'd seriously consider joining Brave Newbies for their nullsec adventures. Still might. I am not an alt of Chribba. |

Kicked myself for not having a 21 day trial. Shot 3 ships in highsec right off the bat, wondered why cops were showing up. Went to lowsec and got my rookie ship blown up by a guy far away with artillery. Went out to mine and turned around, seeing all afk people. Did some missions, lost some ships. Asked strangers for ship replacement. Founds hundreds of kind strangers. See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did. |

I did Military,Advanced mIlitary, and business tutorial. Mine until I had some ISK and trained. Then started doing missions noticed that running missions was more fun than mining. Sell stuff, learn to salvage , read a lot in the forums on what to do. Close to the 14 days I wonder around a low sec killing rats, I saw it was more profitable than Lvl1 and 2 missions until I started seeing pirates chasing me down. Fun stories.

I bought a Rifter. I put lasers on my Rifter. I felt like a space badass in my laz0r Rifter. Then I tried to launch a small secure container and was disappoint.
Then I subbed.
EDIT: I remember the very first time I launched a small secure container. It was glorious. "CCP Dolan is full of ****." - CCP Bettik |

Strangely, I did that exact thing as well. It did not end well. I was so disappointed with it I started flying Cormorants again until I could afford a Moa.
Then my corpies enlightened my mind by pointing me towards Heavy Missiles and the Drake.
"Train Caldari Battlecruiser." they said. "Come out to losec." they said.
I did. And I never looked back.

I did all the tutorial missions. Then carried on with the Sisters of EVE epic arc. Once that was done I joined RvB. I only play casually , few hours here and there, so that whole process took me like 3-4 weeks. :P |

Joined a corp.
Heisted said corp of everything, including it's players.
Then fought in the war-dec that ensued from heisting said corp.
Lost horribly.
But had fun.

Did the military tutorials
Did the soe epic arc
Started the mining tutorial and quit mining after 2 minutes of shooting rocks
Guy in NPC corp told me his profession was ganking and piracy and makes him hella ISK so I grabbed my corax and set destination for lowsec. Misread the autopilot route to mean my next system was my current system and found an Orca in a belt one system out of lowsec. Realized that riches were within my grasp as an evil pirate plying the space lanes of new Eden, locked the Orca and tried to activate my missiles. Got a warning about "you're engaging in an action that blah blah" oh god the Orca is going to get away! Disable safety, launch one volley, get CONCORDed.
Joined RVB to learn the ropes of PVP and emerge from the experience as a combat juggernaut. Misunderstood "ships on contract" to mean "free ships" and was quickly broke within the first 24 hours.
Looked into PVP corps with ship replacement policies and tried to join enlightened industries after reading recruitment ads about newbie friendliness and free ships. Had done research into corp before applying so they assumed I was a spy and was denied.
Went into the corp recruitment channel and found Pixel Navigators, which was one of the best places I could have possibly ended up. Almost didnt get accepted because I was an 11 day old character and therefore probably a spy ;) |

What did you do in your first fourteen days?
Did tutorials. Skipped business, mining, and whatever else boring tutorials.
Did SoE epic arc.
Joined FW. Tried soloing a Tengu in a Thrasher. It went OK.
Decided FW was a messed up clusterfluffle. Quit.
Started hanging out with a nullsec alliance. They dumped FC on me my first day in nullsec. It went OK.
Moved to nullsec.

I'm fairly certain I lost my first real ship, a Kestrel, within the first 14 days (way back >5 years ago).
I warped into an easy site, and started killing the frigates. I finished it, and warped to the next site.
Unfortunately I warped to the wrong bookmark, and warped to a high-difficulty site I meant to avoid. It was the first time I saw an NPC battleship.
I had only a few seconds to admire all the amazing new, and big, ships in the site before they noticed me. |
