Hi guys. As a few (probably very few) of you already know, I've been given the position of Insider's Guide editor or, more appropriately, co-editor (since obviously I don't do a lot of the work that goes in before it gets printed). I basically get the Insider's Guide articles ready to be printed, working closely with the writers and Zapatero at EON. So far I've only helped with one article, the EW article in issue 3, and written one article for issue 2 so I'm fairly green ^^;. Interestingly, I found it more of a challenge to help with an article than write it from scratch.
It's now my task to find ideas for articles in issue 4 and find writers that are pretty much experts in those fields or at least know their way around it fairly well. A good writer should be able to add something new to the topic that most people would not think of. Good writing skills are a plus and, of course, below a certain level of writing skill will make the article unsuitable or difficult to work into something that they'll publish. You don't need to be an amazing writer, it's sort of my place to suggest changes to make it flow and read better while covering all the material.
I'd appreciate if people could tell me what they would like to see an insider's guide on. I'm pretty sure they'll be running two guides of roughly 4-6 pages each. My initial thoughts were to make sure the guides reach the maximum number of people, hence an agent-mission guide was at the top of the list, followed by one on something like manufacturing, maybe? It's entirely up for debate and I thought it best to ask what the forum-goers, who seem to represent a fair cut of the eve community (and especially of EON subscribers), what they would like to see a good guide on in issue 4 (or later issues, perhaps?).
So what would you like to see a guide on and why?
(Can I maybe get a sticky for this for a few days? Pretty please? )

If you do an agent-mission guide, be sure to include some tips in relation to COSMOS agents.
While of no use to me, it would be interesting to know a little more about Tech 2 production.
Again, of bugger all use to me, perhaps you should consider a guide to mining (eg how not to fall asleep and things like that).

Agree with a couple of ideas above:
1. Mission running, especially COSMOS 2. Using probes (to include moon probes?)
My idea:
0.0 - if you live there its all so obvious, if you dont then its a big scary mystery. Might get more people to move there (a good thing). Guide should be for individuals and corps
Looking forward to reading them!!

Edited by: Arlenik Emmanouelik on 28/04/2006 06:58:47 As for why Moon Probing might be good is because its just hard to know where to go and what to look for. And all those reactions, raw materials and all is way too complicated for me at this time.
And also, I would like to see a guide on corp ROLES. The corp role managment is just a big mess. Too complicated. Someone needs to write a good guide on that too. PEACE!

If you haven't read EON issues 1 through 3 yet, you might not know what I'm talking about. The "Insider's Guide" section is where indepth guides on a specific facet of Eve go. They're general how-to guides on a specific thing in eve, written by someone who is pretty well versed in it. Generally, they should teach newer players a lot and still throw in a few tricks, tools or some maths for the older, more experienced players to chew on. There are usually at least two printed in every magazine, as far as I am aware. For some reference, previous articles were: EON issue 1: Safe Navigation (Staying safe when travelling in eve), Trading EON issue 2: Tanking (my article :D), Trading part 2, Recuiting (a nice succinct guide on corporate recruitment). EON issue 3: Guide to ISD division STAR (this one was handled by someone else and you can't really do articles on that kind of thing :p), Trading Part 3 (omg), Electronic Warfare (the one I helped with, written by my good friend James Lyrus).
I think it's safe to say that Trading has been done to death. Doing my own tanking guide, I was surprised by the number of people sending me evemails and emails saying they'd been doing it wrong all this time and thanking me for helping them out. They still come in now and then, usually asking for help with something and I'm glad to give it. Knowing how to tank properly was something I took for granted but so many people honestly were clueless about it. It just shows that no matter how basic the aspect of eve, you can be sure that a good guide on it will go a very long way.

The forerunning ideas at the moment for me are Mission-running, perhaps with a sequel about COSMOS if it's big enough tow arrant it or a small section on it otherwise, and Corporate Management. I could change my mind, of course, and we'll need ideas for future guides so keep the discussion going and the ideas coming.

I'd like to see something on the POS modules, especially the assembly arrays as their descriptions really give no hint of their capabilities, ie how many assembly lines per module, bonuses, etc..
At the moment for many POS modules the only way to find these answers is to buy one and try it.

Starbase operations: - finding a location (probing for moons, other factors such as local ice/stations) - tower configuration 'what do I need to put on my tower' - tower defense 'design philosophy' on how you set it up in terms of guns, launchers, EW. - reaction setups - a luvverly big chart of raw -> intermediate -> complex - 'what's good' in terms of raws. (Perhaps just rarity indices on the chart :) - how and why to do manufacturing/research on a tower.

This one always gets me. People who think they have lower POS costs because they mine ice or that their ships they build are free because they mine the minerals ^^;.
POS operation, while an excellent topic, will not reach an incredible number of people. It would work if it could keep the interest of all eve members and show small corps how they can get in on the POS business. I've been thinking of writing a POS guide myself, but then again I've been thinking of writing an agent mission guide myself too. I can't write them all myself, damnit, it'd look weird ^^;. Besides, I can't be the POS guy, I'm already the tanking guy! :D
Oh and james, any word on getting some articles made on EW for the website or do you think your article covered everything? I was thinking of throwing a few articles on eve-tanking.com about how EW can augment a tank in PVE and PVP.

Mission, is a big guide, from choosing agent to keeping standing, fighting, i guess is more than 6 pages. Cosmos may had some :) If you need help maybe we could speak about that
After tanking (Great guide) EW (very good) maybe melting the two in a how to fit a ship for solo, for group
A guide to probing the galaxy, in search for the hidden mystery is something lot of people would appreciate (Moon, Complex, Ship, Belt, Safe spot...)

I'd like to see a corporate management guide myself. The first day when I was a director of my old corp there were so many different things to look at and it took about two weeks and one starbase anchoring later before we figured out how all the roles, titles, corporate accounts, offices, headquarters, corporate hangars, divisions within hangars and even then I bet I still don't understand half of it that it takes to manage and run a corp effectively.

Missions, escrow, whatnot will be changed SOONÖ when the new and bugged to Jita and back feature of contract system will be available.
Moon probing is not really interesting. Load launcher, align ship, launch one probe, warp to next moon. Rinse. Repeat. Don't relog. Don't dock. Don't leave the system until you got the data written down.
What to mine? Whatever you have a buyer or use for. Colour code, market and market situation espionage is explained in the sticky (and Kaaii's nice trading guide).

I would have liked to see more datacrunshing.
So far we have had a datacrunsh on how many players within a set number of skillpoints, but what to take it some more steps. For example:
1. How many who have certain keyskills in the game? Like Carriers, Dreadnoughts etc. and all sorted for each race?
2. Other keyskills and some of the more rare skills thats are lootable, Like angel encryption methods.
I like datacrunshing...
Continuation with the RP interviews with corporation and alliance leaders, and other (dis)reputable people in the game, have been fun reading :) So continue with that!

I'm very wary of articles about for example recruitment, "how to set up your corp titles" etc. This because it has not much to do with game mechanics, but more with the writers personal view on it.
Personally, I'd like to see an article about guns and missiles. Why don't I get that insane damage other people get? RoF, tracking etc explained. Modules that affect guns etc (and their stacking penalties). Differences between guns and missiles... Think you can fill an entire issue of EON with everything involved in it.

My suggestions:
The tanking guide was excellent, now there is a need for its opposite, the ganking guide on how to maximize DPS/DOT.
POS reactions and how to work out the logistics for multiple POSs. It is a very complex subject and there are too many threads on that alone, so a neat and packed guide on how-to is needed.
A transcription of Halada's mining guide to e-on.
Those subjects might not probably change much in Kali (afaik), so there could be minimal impact when released. ------ aka BinderAJ

Those are definitely some good ideas, I especially like the first one about skills. There's enough to the topic to make for an interesting article that will help people out and there are experts around to write about it.
Historical things don't really make for insider's guides, they could be other articles in the magazine. There are already history articles, too. The first was in issue 3 and I think there's going to be more, if I'm not mistaken.

I would like to see a guide on COSMOS missions. Few people know about it and have done them and know where/what/how to get around it and bit of the story intro as a catcher. Also info on hacking and acheology and manufacturing process for items found in COSMOS. I think this will rise interest and prepare for future :P

If the guide is aimed at new players, how about a guide to the various in-game graphics effects. For example, a green field around a ship indicates armour tanking and a thin red beam is a target painter, etc, etc. It could make a nice colour pic spread (not a great deal of text would actually be needed) and could help many people who are new to the game.

They're aimed at mid-level players, mostly. Players that know enough to be interested and not enough that they can't learn a lot from the guide. They're the typical range of players who buy EON, I think. Keep in mind that guides should be of a broad scope and not something as niche as recognising game graphical effects. Besides, some graphical effects are shared between multiple modules.
Keep the ideas coming. I've a fairly good idea of what I want to run now but feel free to surprise me with an awesome idea.

I would like to see:
Probes: How to effectively use probs to triangulate the location of a hostile target in a system. "They came to shoot you. Now it's time to shoot back!"
Anti-Frigate Rolls: The niche status and placement a destroyer has for large, medium and small fleet maneuvers. The usability of the destroyer while running agent missions, ratting and doing a complex or escorting. Cost effectiveness? (after 2 months of playing EVE I was able to run solo in Coercer while ratting in a .1 system agasint Blood Raiders.)

A lot of people are in your boat. Come the summer, if I have the time, I will try to write up a second article covering most of what was in the EON mag and put it as the main feature on my site. Happy? :).
I see a lot of calls for COSMOS but I don't know if we have any experts and, to be honest, each COSMOS constellation is quite rich and a detailed guide would come in four parts with 4 separate writers since I doubt there's a player who is the master of all four constellations (you'd need like +5 to +9 standing with all four races and some other corps). That's a lot of magazine space dedicated to COSMOS. I'm not saying it's not doable, of course. Enough people seem to want it that it'll make an appearance one way or another.

A speed/agility guide maybe? Eg what is most effective, nanos/intertia stabs and so on. That would be beneficial to everyone imo.

I think a goood series of articles on the basic how toos in EVE:
Agent Running
How to Mine Effectively
Research and Production Explained
The Basics of PvP
Corporate Creation and Management
These are things most players will want to hear more about and some tips from the pro's in these areas would be awesome reading..

An article on breaking the low-sec barrier would be nice. It would consist of a bit on when/why to consider moving to low-sec space, what to expect in low-sec space, getting along with other low-sec denziens, saftey tips for low-sec living, tips for engaging in unsolicited PVP, tips for preparing a corporation for low-sec operations.
It seems to me that fear of low-sec space is driving congestion problems in many areas of Empire space, and this would go a long way to improving that situation. Forum: A place where ideas come to prove their worth.

I'd like a nice section on PVP split into short snappy sections about some of the different roles and featuring some short observations by talented players who take those roles. The fleet commander, the capital ship commander, the tackler, the covert ops, general support and the battleship pilots (and I'm still leaving a number out). You could get a lot of interesting detail while keeping it to the point, rather than trying to do a possibly overgeneral PVP article that tells you little specific (which you could hit in an introduction, or as the first part of a series), and instead of trying to expand a single role too far.

This hasn't been explained for the general population by ccp yet, not even the basics. The player guide is wrong for half a year or longer in the respective parts, or it is missing them since EVE started.
This would not fly because ccp does not want the EON info to be available for the everyday pilot. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

I, personally, would like to see a guide on mining in empire space, high security space. Or low sec mining. Whichever.
More specifically, how to make the transition from the fighter mindset to the miner carebear mindset, and how to most easily make the same/more money at mining than other things in empire. I have no alts.... or do i?! |

Have you been reading my "stuff to put in EON#4"list? Damn MC get everywehere these days.
That said, I haven't approached Chribba yet - he may tell me to naff orf.
Back on topic, I'd like to thank everyone for their ideas, and especially Nyphur for agreeing to take on this task.
And remember, as an added incentive to seeing your name published in print (which looks good on the CV/resume), you also get paid in ISK. Also, so I'm told, one EON writer has enjoyed conjugal relations as a direct result of being published.
Write for EON. Get paid. Get laid.

but whats the use of a superior fitted ship and knowing all the pvp tactics when u can't activate a module or do anyting.
i know some trics and know how to fit my ship but never realy killed anyting becouse of lag and a well placed ctd :(
' for example there was this hostile fleet of cruisers and cruisers only aboud 15 we had same numbers but we had 4 bs's we still lost becouse we where camping the gate they jumped in and breaked cloack all at the same time most of us where lagged out for 60 seconds!
