I've been to the USA and Canada a fair few times and generally American beer/lager isn't up to much.
However, they do have some good micro-breweries. I was in Jackson Wyoming, there is a small brewery there, I think they have a beer called 'snake river' or something close. That was pretty good, although I'm not sure whether I was at altitude or just seriously knackered from the 3 flight marathon journey.
Great thing is, step outside into -25, walk half a mile home and you don't get a hangover because you're sober by the time you get back if not a little frozen. Canadians still have the yanks beaten on beer and the cold.

Most American beers are lousy but I live in Northern California and I am blessed. Near my home they brew Downtown Brown, yes I live 5 miles from the brewery. It is the best beer I have ever tasted from Singapore to San Francisco. Danish beer is good and Australian is good but Downtown Brown is better. Life is good.

Over here the only people who drink bottled beers like bud and miller are the 17 year old shirt and shoes brigade. The only people who drink the lite versions are ummmm no one. It's probably less embarassing as a man to order a wine spritzer than a bud lite. |

IMHO Stella = Wifebeater. I dunno what they put in that ****, but a night on the Stella is a night in the cells as far as i'm concerned
Becks = Nasty tasting crap
Other than that, I love all alcohol equally (even if I have to drink slightly more american alcohol to get pished!)

American beer tastes like rancid chemicals, for the most part.
Actually, that's not quite true, as some the Sam Adams beers are passable, as is one called Old Pete's or something along those lines.
Incidentally, what Americans call Budweiser is a poor copy of a Czech beer

wtf? of all beers in the world, I place american beer at definitive last spot. That is after british, irish, german, czech, belgian, danish, indian, etc etc.
Yeah so its cold, so what? You can cool any beer out there.

From the oldest brewery in America. I drink locally produced beers. Cant stand the large brewerys. There is good and bad everywhere u go u just have to find the good here. And btw we do make great whiskey and such.
All great whisky's have no e in them. If it is spelled with an e, it is not worth the bother. As for beer, give me a pint of McEwan's Export. mmmmm
I'm a fan of the 70 shilling myself. Though I'd like to echo the above comments about whisky, if you want real ones visit Uisge Beatha in the west end of Glasgow. The selection of malts is immense. Misleading topic. I thought you were talking about BEER, not swill.
The only American beer I'll drink is Sam Adams or microbrews. I won't drink anything by Anheuser-Busch.
Some Canadian beer is OK, Molson Canadian (not Golden!) or Labatt Blue are decent.
Given my choice, I like Sapporo - and the stainless steel can keeps it cold for a long time.

I believe that he was referring to the difference between whisky and whiskey, which are effectively seperate types of drink.

Edited by: Sepul Marius on 09/05/2006 16:22:23 American micros are generally high quality, though there seems to be a fascination with bizarre "seasonal" brews that are often hit-and-miss. Three of my favorite micro producers are Alaskan, Sierra Nevada, and Abita (whose "Purple Haze" is sublime).
That said, I'd rather sit down with a pint or five of Tetleys any day of the week. Barring that, Bass will do.
Other great foreign brews:
European distro Beck's. (U.S. gets a different formula that's not nearly as tasty). Any of the Trappist Ales from Belgium. John Courage Smithwick's (essentially Guinness lite)
I nearly forgot, for lighter beers, most asian brews are great: Tsingtao Sapporo Kirin Ichiban 37 (I think that's what it was. It's Vietnamese and quite tasty)

Bud Light is horrible, seriously. But to lump all american beers together is just retarded. American micro brews consistently win awards in European competitions. I live w/in 2 miles of two breweries that have won awards for more than a few of their beers.
If you are ever in Lawrence, KS, you have to go to Free State Brewery. HERE
Just about every beer on their menu (no Bud Light I am afraid) is stellar. They range from ales to stouts. Go on a Monday, cheap beer night.
College town so the scenery isn't too shabby either.

Oh blah blah blah.
Lager, excessively 'hoppy' or not, is still a beer by definition.
