Much in the same way that one's own urine is drinkable, if one is stranded in the desert and on day four without water.

Ive never met anyone who drinks warm beer here in the UK.
They might drink ale warm, but ale != beer. Its like comparing Whiskey and Cognac. Most people here drink cheap lager anyway.
Anyway, german wheat beer > *, and * > ****-weak american pseudo-beer. ----------------

Which type of british beer are you talking about exactly? Lager? Light Ale? Dark Ale? Wheat beer? Mild? Porter? Stout?
Let us know if you have ever actually tried any...

water >= bud light
They served some up at a course I was at in the states at night at a barbecue - didn't have any labels on and at first we thought we'd been served individual sparkling table water in little bottles, which seemed a cool idea since the food was a bit spicy. Didn't realise it was supposed to be beer!

Just to reinforce my point, even the Canadians have far better beer than the Americans, Alexander Keith's would take any American beer by the ears, headbut it full in the face, swing it around it's head and fling it unconscious into the Hudson bay whilst laughing hysterically at the thought of an American beer being worth drinking.

1) British beer stronger than US beer 2) You compare larger to what would appear to be some diluted form of bitter or ale instead of another larger 3) You can chose temprature of your beer 4) I have never drank urine so I bow to your superior knowledge upon that subject 5) 99.9% of all Americans prefer foreign beers
As for story - very very funny as for fact, very very funny.

To further reinforce my point all of the following beers are better than any of that limp wristed muck that is turned out of American breweries..
Stella Artois Becks Kronenburg Hoegarden Heineken Carlsberg Staropramen Warsteiner Grolsh Guiness Caffrey's Duvel Peroni Urquell Nastro Azzuro Asahi Dry
etc... and that's just off the top of my head inside 30 seconds.
Damn I would rather drink San Miguel than anything brewed in the states.

What "beer" you talking about - Real Ale, lager, draught or bottle conditoned, or that fizzy, pasteurised semi-flavoured semi-alcoholic flavoured water you get in cans?
Cask-conditioned and dispensed Real ale is notoriously hard to transport and often does not travel well. That means, in my experience, to be sure you are getting a truly representative pint of the stuff, you ought to travel to the area its made not vice versa - you get the added pleasure of seeing what the part of the country it comes from, is like I hear there is some terrific real ale being made by the US micro-breweries now.
There is a big difference between "proper" bottle conditioned bitter (where it continues to ferment in the bottle) and some of the stuff you find in bottles in supermarkets, which just has the same name as a draught. With a few notable exceptions, if I want bottled beer I much prefer the classic "trappist" type beers, although as I live in the UK I do have to travel miles to get it (like, years ago, I had to travel miles to find a pub serving real ale). I like that quaint and charming Belgian idea you have a different kind of glass for each kind of beer.
And we Brits don't drink warm beer. Its just that there is no need to freeze quality beer to make it drinkable.

Edited by: Big Muthatrucker on 30/04/2006 12:59:03 I'm sorry but this should be considered blasphemy. The only beer I wouldn't rather drink over bud light is pabst. Bud light is crap. More and more small breweries are popping up all over in America get out and enjoy some, they have taste.
As far as sam adams goes...."voted worlds greatest beer" what world is that. I distinctly remember spending 1 year in Weisbaden (sp?) germany and drank a different beer every day and dont think I scratched 10% of them and not one was even close to being as repulsive as sam adams.
But if money is tight I buy MGD in the can...after the first 12 you stop carring about taste.
Been trying to brew my own the last 18 months. Have yet to make anything paletable yet but I'm getting better.
Regardless of what you drink we must all agree that beer is beautifull. Inappropriate content - Laqum |

Yeah any of the big American beers are poor to say the least, the micro breweries do produce some better stuff, not on a par with the stuff that comes out of Europe, but its a start!
The one thing the did annoy me - was why in christ's sake did every bar put gas in beer. I mean Bass - its meant to be brown and flat, but oh no very place i visited decided they have to put gas in it and the same was true for places that served other ales and bitters! Not in the same amounts that go into a lager, but still gas
I do think Guinness escpaed this most terrible crime tho...

I'd take a Grolsch, a Stella Artois, or a Kronenbourg over your typical American beer any day of the week, although I am by nature a cider drinker - I generally drink Magners when I go out although Sainsbury's do a nice line in single-varietal ciders which are generally very good.
When it comes to the big commercial brand name beers, nothing available in the US comes close to what's available in Europe - Belgium and Germany especially. When you start looking at smaller, independent breweries, there's more parity because there's a focus on quality and artisanship rather than pursuing the methods necessary to churn out beer in quantities that the massed beer-drinking American public will guzzle down.
And regarding something that was posted earlier - Newcastle Brown Ale is not a good example of a quality British beer. It's a vile, thin, tasteless concoction with only its cheapness as its redeeming quality. I used to drink it when I'd get to the point on a night out where I was too plastered to taste what was going down anyway; saved me a few quid over the last couple of years of high school, but I can't say I ever enjoyed the flavour.

*twitch* Most of the stuff produced in the US should'nt even be allowed to call itself whiskey. it's just about excusable with enough ice that you cant' taste it.
Go hunting around stockists, and get hold of a bottle of Caol Isla Cask strength malt. 25 years old if you can get it, 12 or 18 otherwise. Ideally, find a bottle that's been in storage for at least 5 or 10 years since it was bought.
(I've got a bottle of Talisker that was laid down by my late grandfather in 1948, and that was when it was 18 years old. just looking at that bottle is better than drinking budweiser. That one's reserved for a *really* good day. it's brother was opened when I was born...)
But once you've tracked down that perfect bottle of Caol Isla, pour yourself a dram, and leave it, and get a small amount of fresh water, add just a tiny bit of water to the malt, to release the oils.
(no ice. if you even think about adding ice to a single island malt, I will personally come round to your house and give you an example of the time-honoured "glasgow kiss"... )
sit back, breathe in, and drink. slowly.
Appreciate it. you've just drunk something that's taken more loving care to produce than an entire year's supply of budweiser.
if you like a peatier, stronger malt, swap the Caol Isla for Laphroag. for a smokier, malted texture, try a lowland malt like Royal Lochnagar. for a slightly sweet taste, change to Cardhu.
and don;t get me started on rare absinthes.

It should be well known that beers that are exported are NOT the same as the beer you get domestically. When I was in England, I remember the distinct differences between the Guiness there and the Guiness sold in the US. It was of course better in England, why wouldn't it be?
Now, I will not defend the exported American beers, simply because I don't have a clue what you get in Europe, but I can guaruntee you that it's crap compared to what is sold here, which is crap compared to what is GOOD here.
Mendocino Brewing Company Lagunitas Brewing Company (Actually mentioned on that Forbes list, a surprise!) Anchor Brewing Company Gorden Biersch Brewing Company New Belgium Brewing Company Great Divide Brewing Company
I am personally biased towards Northern California and Colorado beers, because that's where I've lived. The above brewers will provide some of the best beers America has to offer. Sierra-Nevada gets an honorable mention. Particular beers of note:
Red Tail Ale (Mendocino) Marzen (Gorden Biersch) Sunshine Wheat (New Belgium) Yeti (Great Divide) Anchor Steam (Anchor)
If had five beers only to have, those five would probably be right at the top. Red Tail Ale is by far the best beer I have ever had, and yes, I've been to Europe, I've had what you consider the best over there. If you ask me, craft brewers in the US beat the snot out of just about anything Europe produces. Quality Mexican beers and Canadian beers taste better to me than most European beers. When I think of a European beer, I think either it's really fizzy, and rather skunkish (Heinekin, Grolsch, many Czech beers) or it's way too loaded with flavor and much too heavy. I will always give it up for Newcastle, a great brew, and for those Americans who haven't had it fresh, it's much much better. Belgians are the kings of European brewing, however, there is no doubt. I would put most Belgian beers on the same table as most craft American beers. The quality is the same, there is simply more care put into the beer than at the much larger brewers. With that being said, the fact that America has such a larger land mass, and so many more small brewers, I gotta give it up to the good old USA.
And to whoever said something about Whiskey. Well, this is like apples and oranges friend. Scotch and Bourbon are two different liquors. Johnny Walker and Makers Mark simply cannot be compared. Sure, you can enjoy one over the other, but that simply shows a preference of style of drink. This would almost be like comparing Mescal and Tequila. They are not the same drinks. They may come from similar distillery processes, but are nonetheless, different drinks.
Drink irresponsibly.

I guess im the only one who does not get all confronted about taste when drinking an alchoholic beverage. I mean once the buzz kicks in you lose most of your ability to taste, which explains the long staggers into white castle where I end up ordering 10 sliders and some onion rings all the while not being able to eat them because I can't find my mouth anymore and I forgot where I live.
Anyways, my fav beer is anything with alchohol.

I've been to the USA and Canada a fair few times and generally American beer/lager isn't up to much.
However, they do have some good micro-breweries. I was in Jackson Wyoming, there is a small brewery there, I think they have a beer called 'snake river' or something close. That was pretty good, although I'm not sure whether I was at altitude or just seriously knackered from the 3 flight marathon journey.
Great thing is, step outside into -25, walk half a mile home and you don't get a hangover because you're sober by the time you get back if not a little frozen. Canadians still have the yanks beaten on beer and the cold.

American beer tastes like rancid chemicals, for the most part.
Actually, that's not quite true, as some the Sam Adams beers are passable, as is one called Old Pete's or something along those lines.
Incidentally, what Americans call Budweiser is a poor copy of a Czech beer

Edited by: Sepul Marius on 09/05/2006 16:22:23 American micros are generally high quality, though there seems to be a fascination with bizarre "seasonal" brews that are often hit-and-miss. Three of my favorite micro producers are Alaskan, Sierra Nevada, and Abita (whose "Purple Haze" is sublime).
That said, I'd rather sit down with a pint or five of Tetleys any day of the week. Barring that, Bass will do.
Other great foreign brews:
European distro Beck's. (U.S. gets a different formula that's not nearly as tasty). Any of the Trappist Ales from Belgium. John Courage Smithwick's (essentially Guinness lite)
I nearly forgot, for lighter beers, most asian brews are great: Tsingtao Sapporo Kirin Ichiban 37 (I think that's what it was. It's Vietnamese and quite tasty)

Bud Light is horrible, seriously. But to lump all american beers together is just retarded. American micro brews consistently win awards in European competitions. I live w/in 2 miles of two breweries that have won awards for more than a few of their beers.
If you are ever in Lawrence, KS, you have to go to Free State Brewery. HERE
Just about every beer on their menu (no Bud Light I am afraid) is stellar. They range from ales to stouts. Go on a Monday, cheap beer night.

Now small brewers and microbreweries are where its at for good american beer. Small brewers may only supply a certain region or area, they aren't national but they aren't limited to a state/city. Yuengling is my favorite, it can be found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, and all over Pennsylvania. But not all small brewers and microbrews are good, you have to taste around.
Now, Budweiser, and Miller and huge beer companies like those, just suck at making beer. I can't put it any other way. Edit: Bud and Miller say they make beer, but I wouldn't call it that.

Curse Prohibition and the crushing of the American beer industry. We once had many thousands of brewers plying their glorious trade before this heinous miscarriage of democracy. Thankfully after a few generations of this swill brewing industrial brewers, such as those residents of Milwaukee and St. Louis, we finally have a viable and tasty alternative to weak, watery American lager. I think someone referred to it alcopop? Appropriate.
Here in the Seattle area, I can walk into any bar, pub or local watering hole and find decent, hardworking American bartenders dispensing locally brewed Mack and Jack's. They may also carry a fine Oregon product known as Black Butte Porter. For a little flavor from east of the Rockies, Belgium Brewery's Fat Tire is also common. Although the Fat Tire is not nearly as good as their 1554 or Biere De Mars.
We also have (these are not the best, but they are far better than your average macrobrews) Rock Bottom Brewery as well as Rogue. Then there are the privately owned brewpubs, which are too numerous to count.
I take great pleasure in providing small tours when foreign friends come to visit. It does not matter if they are from Canada, England, Sweden, or even Germany, they always look up in surprise when my beer recommendation gently caresses their discerning palates, with subtle and tasteful explosions of beer drinking joy.
To you foreign beer snobs that so denigrate American beers, I say come to Seattle and let me change your thinking.
Your thanks, gratitude and apologies for slandering my favorite beverage are all the payment I need.

The 3 huge American breweries (Coors, Bud, Miller) all tend to bottle or can ****. They do own some subsidiaries who make O.K. or even good beer (Blue Moon comes to mind as does Leinenkugels), but the best beer in America comes from Microbreweries. Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada, and Sprecher(Pint Bottles) are some of my favorites. But, in the end, the best beer I have had comes from Europe. I really don't make distinctions between what is and isn't really beer, but I love English bitters (hard to get something like this in the states, or maybe I just haven't looked hard enough). I'm also a fan of Erdinger Weissbeir, I would recommend that. If you like Guiness you should try Beamish.

Bombardier, Spitfire, Tanglefoot, and my local brewed Ducks Folly beat everything. Guiness is good but I don't like to drink loads of it. Lager is good for cleaning your pallette.

Yellow, fizzy, and light (but not tasteless) is good when it's frikkin 100¦F -- that's 37.7C -- outside every day during the summer. You Euros don't know what it's like living in this inferno. That said, most, if not all, mass-produced American beers are crap. Microbrews and local breweries ftw.
