I'd take a Grolsch, a Stella Artois, or a Kronenbourg over your typical American beer any day of the week, although I am by nature a cider drinker - I generally drink Magners when I go out although Sainsbury's do a nice line in single-varietal ciders which are generally very good.
When it comes to the big commercial brand name beers, nothing available in the US comes close to what's available in Europe - Belgium and Germany especially. When you start looking at smaller, independent breweries, there's more parity because there's a focus on quality and artisanship rather than pursuing the methods necessary to churn out beer in quantities that the massed beer-drinking American public will guzzle down.
And regarding something that was posted earlier - Newcastle Brown Ale is not a good example of a quality British beer. It's a vile, thin, tasteless concoction with only its cheapness as its redeeming quality. I used to drink it when I'd get to the point on a night out where I was too plastered to taste what was going down anyway; saved me a few quid over the last couple of years of high school, but I can't say I ever enjoyed the flavour.

There are great american beers out there. Everyone is so use to the mass produced water thats why we get such a bad rap. I like yuengling myself. From the oldest brewery in America. I drink locally produced beers. Cant stand the large brewerys. There is good and bad everywhere u go u just have to find the good here. And btw we do make great whiskey and such.

Whoa now. No one has mentioned Miller High-Life.
Nothing says a good beer like a 3.50$ price tag for 6 16ozs cans.

*twitch* Most of the stuff produced in the US should'nt even be allowed to call itself whiskey. it's just about excusable with enough ice that you cant' taste it.
Go hunting around stockists, and get hold of a bottle of Caol Isla Cask strength malt. 25 years old if you can get it, 12 or 18 otherwise. Ideally, find a bottle that's been in storage for at least 5 or 10 years since it was bought.
(I've got a bottle of Talisker that was laid down by my late grandfather in 1948, and that was when it was 18 years old. just looking at that bottle is better than drinking budweiser. That one's reserved for a *really* good day. it's brother was opened when I was born...)
But once you've tracked down that perfect bottle of Caol Isla, pour yourself a dram, and leave it, and get a small amount of fresh water, add just a tiny bit of water to the malt, to release the oils.
(no ice. if you even think about adding ice to a single island malt, I will personally come round to your house and give you an example of the time-honoured "glasgow kiss"... )
sit back, breathe in, and drink. slowly.
Appreciate it. you've just drunk something that's taken more loving care to produce than an entire year's supply of budweiser.
if you like a peatier, stronger malt, swap the Caol Isla for Laphroag. for a smokier, malted texture, try a lowland malt like Royal Lochnagar. for a slightly sweet taste, change to Cardhu.
and don;t get me started on rare absinthes.

It should be well known that beers that are exported are NOT the same as the beer you get domestically. When I was in England, I remember the distinct differences between the Guiness there and the Guiness sold in the US. It was of course better in England, why wouldn't it be?
Now, I will not defend the exported American beers, simply because I don't have a clue what you get in Europe, but I can guaruntee you that it's crap compared to what is sold here, which is crap compared to what is GOOD here.
Mendocino Brewing Company Lagunitas Brewing Company (Actually mentioned on that Forbes list, a surprise!) Anchor Brewing Company Gorden Biersch Brewing Company New Belgium Brewing Company Great Divide Brewing Company
I am personally biased towards Northern California and Colorado beers, because that's where I've lived. The above brewers will provide some of the best beers America has to offer. Sierra-Nevada gets an honorable mention. Particular beers of note:
Red Tail Ale (Mendocino) Marzen (Gorden Biersch) Sunshine Wheat (New Belgium) Yeti (Great Divide) Anchor Steam (Anchor)
If had five beers only to have, those five would probably be right at the top. Red Tail Ale is by far the best beer I have ever had, and yes, I've been to Europe, I've had what you consider the best over there. If you ask me, craft brewers in the US beat the snot out of just about anything Europe produces. Quality Mexican beers and Canadian beers taste better to me than most European beers. When I think of a European beer, I think either it's really fizzy, and rather skunkish (Heinekin, Grolsch, many Czech beers) or it's way too loaded with flavor and much too heavy. I will always give it up for Newcastle, a great brew, and for those Americans who haven't had it fresh, it's much much better. Belgians are the kings of European brewing, however, there is no doubt. I would put most Belgian beers on the same table as most craft American beers. The quality is the same, there is simply more care put into the beer than at the much larger brewers. With that being said, the fact that America has such a larger land mass, and so many more small brewers, I gotta give it up to the good old USA.
And to whoever said something about Whiskey. Well, this is like apples and oranges friend. Scotch and Bourbon are two different liquors. Johnny Walker and Makers Mark simply cannot be compared. Sure, you can enjoy one over the other, but that simply shows a preference of style of drink. This would almost be like comparing Mescal and Tequila. They are not the same drinks. They may come from similar distillery processes, but are nonetheless, different drinks.
Drink irresponsibly.

I guess im the only one who does not get all confronted about taste when drinking an alchoholic beverage. I mean once the buzz kicks in you lose most of your ability to taste, which explains the long staggers into white castle where I end up ordering 10 sliders and some onion rings all the while not being able to eat them because I can't find my mouth anymore and I forgot where I live.
Anyways, my fav beer is anything with alchohol.

Most disgusting beer ever IMO, way too creamy.
But back on topic, European beer in general > American beer. I'm also quite a fan of the 'oriental' beers for a bit of a change once in a while

All great whisky's have no e in them. If it is spelled with an e, it is not worth the bother. As for beer, give me a pint of McEwan's Export. mmmmm -----------------------------------------------

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but my favorite beer is American made Honey Brown, which is actually a lager with a bit of honey in the taste to sweeten it. Other than that the only American beer I can stomach is MGD, and only ice cold.
